This regular stereophonic recording with the Bavarian Broadcasting Symphony is a goddess that can be said to be the white eyebrows among the rare Schuricht Wagners. It is a unique Wagner performance that no one other than Schuricht could do, and the programming is very unique. The incredible purity of the core of the music, unbelievable to a conductor of over 80, has become even more pronounced. Like other songs, Schuricht's tempo is generally fast and the expression is concise, so it is tempting to think that it has a different direction from romantic music, but the essence of music that can not be expressed externally is In fact, it is being told, and this Wagner is, without exception, a true fruit of Schuricht. This board has recurred several times since its first appearance as a masterpiece. It is also the most demanding discipline in improvised music. Here, none of the well known clichés apply: there are no "dialogues," no "sparring" or contention with a partner, no call and response. So far, there has been a plethora of pianists, keyboardists, guitarists, violinists, harpists who have the wherewithal to accompany themselves, either harmonically and/or rhythmically, and to play countermelodies or contrasting lines. Sometimes solo playing is mere display, sometimes it is a kind of cleansing exercise aimed to rid the music of dependency on rhythmic or harmonic supports. Alternatively, it answers needs locked away in a conception of music too pure and individual to be exposed to interplay with others or with material familiar enough to allow the listener to surf across the lacunae. In the world of bass playing, solo records on unaccompanied double bass are a rare find. This short list is joined by The Art of Balkan Bass Art, by renowned Serbian bassist Nenad Vasilic. In the right hands this wonderful and crucial instrument can combine and achieve many things like melody, groove, soundscapes and a wide array of emotions. Vasilic, who is a prolific composer, a band leader, and a sought after bassist, makes a full use of every possibility his instrument affords and makes a full display here. Apart from a few tunes written by Vasilic, most of the songs are traditional songs, and he uses the broad scope of his instrument to create melodies, grooves and sound textures, often all of these in one song. Vasilic plays with such a conviction and displays a full array of technical gifts that often sounds like one man orchestra. When using the instrument as a melodic instrument, as on tracks such as "Kalesh Bre Angjo," "Zapevala Sojka Ptica" "Sila Kale Bar" or "Ja Proshetah Sefteli Sokakom" he captures the yearning that is interwoven in those Balkan melodies. But when he grooves, he captures the joy of those rhythms as on "Vranjanka" or "See You on Eleven." The skill of commanding attention and sustaining interest with only a double bass lies in the ability to treat this instrument as a self contained unit and as a platform for unheard things. Vasilic strays melodically and rhythmically when improvising, but never too much, and he never wanders into fully abstract territories. Pulsing and bubbling with a focused drive, these 11 pieces are relatively brief and focused essays. And the tone of these tunes is excellent. The Art of the Balkan Bass is recorded beautifully as the instrument's natural resonance is captured to its tiniest details. As a result to all of that, this record casually captivates from start to end, making a full display of Vasilic's talents as a performer and improviser. He began playing tabla aged 10, but was also drawn to the American music that he heard on the radio and leaking through the doorway of his local jazz music shop (Ahmad Jamal and John Coltrane were early discoveries). At 17, Korwar moved to Pune to study Environmental Science, but instead dedicated his time to music, practising tabla under the tutelage of Rajeev Devasthali, translating his skills to the western drum kit and playing as a session musician. On completing these studies a decade ago, he moved to London where he trained as a classical tabla player under the guidance of Sanju Sahai at SOAS (The School of Oriental and African Studies), focusing on the adaptation of Indian classical rhythmic material to non-Indian percussion instruments. Korwar has since established himself as one of the most original and compelling voices in the UK jazz scene, leading the UPAJ Collective - a loose band of South Asian jazz and Indian classical musicians brought together through a love of collaboration and improvisation who set up a residency at the Jazz Café in London. Korwar has collaborated with the likes of Shabaka Hutchings (The Comet Is Coming), clarinettist Arun Ghosh and producer Hieroglyphic Being, as well as groups Penya and Ill Considered. He has toured with Kamasi Washington, Yussef Kamaal and Moses Boyd. Korwar's daring debut album, Day To Day, recorded with the support of the Steve Reid Foundation, was released by Ninja Tune in 2016. The album fused traditional folk music recorded with the Sidi community in India (combining East African, Sufi and Indian influences) with contemporary jazz and electronics. In November 2018, Gearbox Records released a triple vinyl live album by Sarathy Korwar and UPAJ Collective. My East Is Your West, performed and recorded at a sold out Church of Sound show, is a brilliant and unique blend of London's new jazz talent with Indian classical instrumentation. A critically-acclaimed take on the cultural appropriation of 'spiritual' Indo-jazz, the three hour show was recorded following a single 45-minute rehearsal. The resulting album was awarded The Guardian's Contemporary Album of the Month. Korwar releasee his second studio album, More Arriving, through The Leaf Label in July 2019. With this latest release, Korwar blasts out his own vibrant, pluralistic narrative for the world to hear. Not "Supermellow", but super dope one of the grooviest albums ever from drummer Paul Humphrey, and a sweet batch of laidback electric funky jazz cuts! Paul's working here with a bit more keyboards and guitar than before all nicely compressed into the grooves that are directed by his tight work on drums often stepping around in a really badass mode that we totally love, and which moves past a simple approach to funky rhythms. Humphrey clearly knows that he's got to complicate things a bit more than usual to keep the ears of the increasingly sophisticated 70s listener by going for hipper changes and timings, while still keeping the tight core funky groove intact. He's helped strongly in his efforts here by players who include Joe Sample, Wilton Felder, and Arthur Adams all playing in a more laidback, less studio mode than on other sets and even the arranger Nick Decaro manages to play some groovy accordion on a few tracks! Plaid - Quick Emix AllMusic Review by John Bush When Ed Handley and Andy Turner left Black Dog Productions in 1995 to record strictly as Plaid, they unfortunately jettisoned the sound of their own classic material. The style they embraced was organic but chilly, propulsive but also airy, and more heavily melodic than any other techno act of their time. Four albums later, in 2003, Plaid released Spokes amid the self-started hoopla of a return to the classic sound of pre-BDP-breakup classics like Mbuki Mvuki and "Scoobs in Columbia." (Ironic, though, that the duo's previous record, Double Figure, glossed on the old formula as well.) Fans anxious to hear tracks minus the steel drums and overworked melodies won't be completely satisfied with Spokes; nearly all of this territory has already been plotted with more detail and flair on Handley and Turner's first three records. That said, it's a simple matter of deciding which of these retreads have traction anyway and which are so thread-bare they're in danger of dissolving completely. On the plus side, listeners will be able to rely on "Upona" and "Zeal," particularly excellent examples of the ghostly electro that first launched the pair back in 1995. On the other extreme, though, "Cedar City" and "Get What You Gave" are rewrites so blatant they sound as though they've already appeared on at least two Plaid LPs previously. Worst of all, Spokes has many more examples of the latter than the former. Across the Persian Gulf The Association had quite a few singles and album tracks other than the four or five big hits that everyone remembers from constant radio play. This thoroughly annotated two-CD, 51-song compilation, though, has way too much stuff to pore through unless you're an unforgiving sucker for their light harmonies and clever arrangements. Those are matched to material that's sometimes good, but often too airily lightweight and closer to the Lettermen than Brian Wilson. On the positive side, this does have all five Top Ten hits, the odd, interesting low-charting singles like "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies" (their most psych-pop-conscious outing), plenty of LP cuts that haven't been on CD before, and the obscure, pre-"Along Comes Mary" folk-rock covers of "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" and Bob Dylan's "One Too Many Mornings" (both from 1965, and both decent). Some of the tracks are presented in single versions that aren't easily available, and there are a couple of previously unreleased outtakes from their 1966 album And Then...Along Comes the Association, neither very memorable, though "Better Times" is reasonable bouncy California harmony pop/rock. There's a rare 1966 Columbia single by Larry Ramos and Jules Alexander recorded in the 1970s by Russ Giguere and the side project Bijou (again, rarer than they are exciting). There's also the occasionally ambitious effort, like the cover of P.F. Sloan's fine "On a Quiet Night," the moody "You Hear Me Call Your Name," or the queasily morbid "Requiem for the Masses," which is interesting if not wholly successful. But much of this is pleasant, too-wholesome puffery, edging further into blandness on much of the late-'60s and early-'70s material that occupies disc two, including their cover of Jimmy Webb's "P.F. Sloan," which is a more interesting idea than it is a good song. The two 1975 and three 1981 tracks that close the set are for the most part going to stretch the patience of all but the most devoted fans. Unless you're a sunshine pop fanatic, a basic Association greatest-hits comp (or their frequent spins on oldies radio) should be enough to maintain your tan. Members Sean Booth and Rob Brown prove they've become masters of programming throughout, issuing a more than suitable follow-up to their critically praised 1995 release, Tri Repetae++ (1997's Chiastic Slide wasn't considered a true follow-up by the band). Although it may be hard to take for those uninitiated into Autechre's unique style (it's hard to detect melodies initially), you'll discover something new with each repeated listen. Since all the songs are cut from the same sonic cloth, the album is best when listened to in its entirety, but the tracks "Acroyear2," "Rae," and "Fold4, Wrap5" are definite highlights. Although not for everyone, LP5 should be admired, since it's not comparable to anything past or present. Uncompromisingly cutting-edge. As The Flys, they issued a self-financed five-track EP at the end of the year before signing with EMI on the back of a tour with Buzzcocks. Over the next three years, The Flys were responsible for a dazzling run of witty, supremely melodic, endlessly inventive singles and two superb albums, "Waikiki Beach Refugees" and "Own", with the latter standing some forty years later as the Great Lost Album of the pop-punk era. However, a lack of commercial success and endless internal bickering saw guitarist, singer and chief songwriter Neil O'Connor pull the plug in mid-1980 to join sister Hazel - who'd been spotted while supporting The Flys at a Marquee Club gig - during her rise to prominence with the film Breaking Glass. Today Belongs To Me is the first complete anthology of a band that, despite critical acclaim and major label support, somehow fell through the cracks. It includes every known studio recording - including that early pre-EMI EP - as well as nine previously unreleased, from-the-masters studio demos, with two early versions of 1979 single 'Living In The Sticks' joined by seven previously-unheard late Seventies songs in the classic Flys tradition. Seefeel - Utreat AllMusic Review by Glenn Swan There are those typically Seefeel-ish moments in Succour -- the looping of heavily treated sounds, vocals, keyboards, and guitar feedback that either transcend the clichés of electronica or wish it had a little more of it. Admittedly, Mark Clifford, Darren Seymour, Sarah Peacock, and Justin Fletcher do not want to be Moby or Underworld or anyone like that -- their guitar roots pointed them toward moody ambience and experimentation rather than the dance clubs. To this end they have become a respectable oddity -- prog-rock disguised as ambient psuedo-trance. By the time we reach them at this album, there are a couple rough spots, as they were supposedly having band problems at the time. Tracks like "Extract" repeat its key phrase tiredly for up to seven minutes, and frequently Clifford and Fletcher run to their signature tin-can drum samples and ambient clang of pipes in an attempt to keep other tracks afloat (like the somewhat unsurprising "Rupt" and "Cut"). Even more percussively obnoxious is "Vex" (a perfect title, under the circumstances), but it's the first time that listeners might recognize Seymour's bass amongst all the heavy treatments (and that's near the end of the album). What redeems Succour is a half-dozen other tracks, like the edgy polyrhythms and watery ambience of "When Face Was Face," replete with steady clangs and layered vocal lilts, making the whole production like a Javanese gamelan in space. "Fracture" follows next, a stark anthem with almost atypical and crunchy drums like a duet of rusted gasoline barrels, surrounded by guitar feedback and echoing vocals. "Ruby-Ha," though about as repetitive as "Extract," manages a little variation with the tattered ribbons of Peacock's voice (without whom neither the track nor the album would fare as well), sort of like a nursery-school lullaby long forgotten, played back on a pocket TV. "Gatha" comes off like a track from MAIN, with its needling guitar ripples, industrial static, and cavernous growls, though a bit heavy-handed on the bass drum (Indian tribes come to mind). Without the drum, perhaps there would be a taste of something rather refreshing in its minimalism. "Cut" has all the trappings of the weaker songs, but fares better because of the "dubby" bassline and somewhat more soulful rhythm track. "Utreat" closes out the disc beautifully, with a minimal call-and-response loop between electric piano and bass, peppered with next-door vocals and keyboard vapors. This track alone makes up for a third of the albums shortcomings. Overall, this is perhaps the bleakest album from Seefeel (their final for Warp records), but few do it as well. Rememberin' Stevie Line-up:: Bass Guitar - Greg Rzab Drums - Richie Hayward Electric Guitar, Vocals - Buddy Guy Guitar - Neil Hubbard Sleeve - Ben Wilson (8), Zombart American blues guitarist and singer was born July 30th, 1936 in Lettsworth, Louisiana, and is one of the pioneers of the Chicago blues sound. Began performing with bands in Baton Rouge in the '50s before moving to Chicago in 1957. He originally recorded for Cobra Records (and, under the pseudonym Friendly Chap, for Delmark Records) before moving to Chess, where he worked as a sideman and leader, when Cobra folded. He moved to Vanguard in 1967 and then went on to work with a variety of labels. He is the brother of Phil Guy. Guy has won six Grammy awards, 23 W.C. Handy Awards, and, in 2003, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts. He was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2008.
