Offering a rich sound that incorporates a unique blend of genres with a sharp focus on delivering the groove, it is no overstatement to say that this is Adam Ben Ezra's best work to date. For his latest effort, Adam recruited New York-based producer Isaac DaBom whose fingerprint is instantly recognizable and offers a tantalizing sound. Working closely for two months pre-production and an intensive one month recording period (in which Adam practically played every instrument), 'Hide and Seek' was born. Representing the peak of his career thus far, the album incorporates jazz, hip hop, R&B, electronica and Middle Eastern influences together with Adam's instantly recognizable signature musical language, creating something that is essential listening both to casual listeners and hardcore music enthusiasts. 9. Artist: Sam Myers & Anson Funderburgh Title: My Love Is Here To Stay Year Of Release: 1985/1990 Label: Black Top Records Genre: Electric Blues, Texas Blues Quality: FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 43:05 Total Size: 259 MB Tracklist: 1. My Love Is Here To Stay (3:32) This was the initial coupling between Sam and Anson that originally appeared on Black Top in 1984. As luck would have it, I was in the Dallas strip-mall studio when this was recorded. Sam and Anson were very much the odd couple of the blues. Anson, a sober, slow-talker from Plano, Texas, could usually be found chasing a little white ball across the pasture with a golf stick when he wasn't bending notes on his '54 Stratocaster. Sam, who liked nothing better than ordering a double Paul Bunyan breakfast after a gig at 4 a.m., was having rent problem in Jackson, Mississippi, and struggling to buy harmonicas. Sam sat in with Anson's group, the Rockets, whenever they played in Jackson, and they found that they fit like a glove. Sam wasn't part of the group when My Love Is Here to Stay was recorded, but that changed when the album got rave reviews. The recording session was completed quickly with very few extra takes. But while Sam and Anson seemed on the same page musically, they didn't exactly get along socially. At one point, Sam chided Anson that he needed to learn some new chords to stay in the music business. Anson in turn told Sam (who was legally blind), he better move his leg or his dog was going to piss on it! The music here speaks for itself-this is one of the best blues CDs recorded in the 1980s. Sam recycles some of his earlier material including the title track, My Heart Cries Out for You" and "Hep Cats in Big Town." There are a few well-chosen covers, but not many, as Anson and Sam came up with some clever originals. The musicianship is superb. Sam's playing is comparable to Little Walter, and Anson proves he's a master of the Stratocaster. If you missed this one the first time around, or you lost it in Katrina like me, here's you chance to own a classic. ~Jeff Hannusch Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

    Battles - EP C-B EP (2006) flac

Artist: Battles Title: EP C-B EP Year Of Release: 2006 Label: Warp Records Genre: Electronic, Rock, Math Rock, Experimental, Alternative Rock Quality: 320 kbps / FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 01:06:18 Total Size: 159.8 MB / 404,72 MB Tracklist: [09:19] 01. Battles - FANTASY AllMusic Review by Brian Way Battles is a breed of rock band unto itself, sounding arguably like no one else out there. Taking cues from math rock's complexity, Krautrock's repetition, electronica's unlimited sampledelic potential, and the avant-garde's penchant for heresy, they have compiled a collection of their two five-song EPs here that virtually defies description. Made up of a couple-few versions of the same piece a couple times over, all obliquely named and sounding nothing like each other, these are not merely remixes, and they form a cohesive whole. There is "IPT 2" and "Ipt-2." There are "SZ2," "B+T" and "UW." And "Tras 2 & 3" are included, but not the original "Tras," available on its own EP/single. Some tracks like "UW" and "BTTLS" meander aimlessly, but the majority, including "B+T" and "Tras 2," succeed in capturing a sublime groove among the crazy clutter. A highlight, and the definition of the Battles ethos is "Hi/Lo," a lumbering mix of live drums, keyboard bleeps and a reluctant syncopation between synth bass and the stringed variety, culminating in a free jazz guitar freak-out. "SZ2" begins with intertwined guitar lines and what sounds like sleigh bells until a distorted bass and some synthetic brass drop a frenetic off-timed riff, then the whole song inverts itself into a free-funk spazz-out. "Dance," the only conventionally titled track, appears to use samples of vocal whispers and glottal stops to mesh with live drums and create a rhythm briefly waiting for its eventual Fripp-ian guitar scronks to scream through. At least that's what it sounds like, but who knows? Battles blurs the distinction between "organic" and "electronic," and hopefully that's the point. An aficionado of all esoteric music would wait with baited breath to see what the long-awaited Warp release will sound like. PAST TENSE: THE BEST OF SPARKS is an immaculate lesson in how to stay consistently interesting for fifty years. With sleeve-notes by Simon Price*, each track is hand-picked by Ron and Russell to best epitomise the era of Sparks from which they are drawn - forerunners of art rock, inventors of the synth duo, masters of new wave pop, Europop experimentalists and self-revisionists, in the 21st century they pioneered the electronic opera before delivering 2017's pop masterpiece Hippopotamus. Born in Oakland, California in 1943, he began singing in his church youth choir while still a toddler, and by age five was playing piano; just two years later, he assumed full-time piano accompaniment duties for the family gospel group, making their recorded debut in 1957. A decade later, Hawkins and Betty Watson co-founded the Northern California State Youth Choir, drawing on the finest soloists from throughout the Bay Area to build the 50-member ensemble, which soon entered the studio to cut the 1968 LP Let Us Go into the House of the Lord, its modern, R&B-influenced production pointing the way to a new era in gospel recording. Let Me Stay 11. 1026 For an album that never had a hit to drive it, by a group that isn't too well remembered on its own terms, Eire Apparent's Sunrise is amazingly well known, at least as an artifact among Jimi Hendrix fans, owing to the fact that the guitarist produced it (and played on parts of it). But one wonders how many people have ever actually listened to the album as it turns out, it's a pleasing, tuneful, and occasionally bold psychedelic pop/rock excursion, similar in many ways to the Yardbirds' Little Games album, except that Eire Apparent were apparently far more comfortable with psychedelic pop stylings here than Keith Relf, Jimmy Page, et al., were on that Yardbirds record. The mix of lyrical acoustic and electric guitar sounds, some tasteful light orchestrations (strings and horns), and trippy lyrical conceits all works extremely well; this is a surprising psychedelic pop release, gently trippy most of the way through with a few searing contributions by Hendrix. Almost as important are the hints one gets of Ernie Graham's subsequent songwriting range in embryonic form on numbers such as "Rock & Roll Band" and "Magic Carpet" his work is rootsier and mostly more accessible than that of Mick Cox, the other major songwriter in the group (though he does make a pleasing contribution with "Let Me Stay"). Between their best songs, the group's overall musical facility, and Hendrix's contributions, the whole album ends up extremely strong and consistent, and well worth hearing on its own terms, even if it wasn't breaking any new ground musically. The record should have done better than it did, but its release by Buddah (which had virtually no presence in England) limited its overseas impact and, in any case, the group had lost most of its British audience by then. Also, American radio probably didn't know where to place it, since it straddled both the pop and psychedelic categories (and in very bold terms), along with elements of roots rock. And it missed an opportunity as well the original LP release was missing the single B-side "Rock & Roll Band," which covered a lot of the same territory that the Hollies were to parlay into a Top Ten hit a couple of years later with "Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress)." Juxtapose that with numbers like "The Clown" which plunged into psychedelic/metal in a pop framework that distantly echoes both Hendrix's music and that of the Yardbirds of "Happenings Ten Years' Time Ago" and one can see the range this group had. It's all admirable music, but was apparently too tough to sell easily without a hit single to pull people in. And it's all still worth hearing, even four decades on. Battles - Race : Out AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek It's official: in 2007, it's all come full circle. Prog rock has made its way into the indie scene. Battles' Mirrored, their debut full-length after three EPs, makes that plain. Messrs. John Stanier of Helmet and Tomahawk, guitarist/keyboardist Ian Williams of Don Caballero and Storm & Stress, guitarist David Konopka of Lynx, and avant solo musician Tyondai Braxton have constructed an album that combines the best of Van Der Graaf Generator, Magma, Krautrock, and math rock, while coming up with something that stands so far out on the fringe that it is in a league of its own. That so much of this music is created via the magic of software and combined with one- or two-note keyboard and guitar patterns makes it the Philip K. Dick equivalent of modern rock. The intro, "Race: In," comes flying out of the box with a series of rim shots and repetitive guitar lines before Braxton comes whistling into the front end. This is a Disney tune for Snow White by the Seven Dwarfs run amok. The abstract patterns introduced by the keyboards and bassline serve to underscore the melody, complex though it may be, and the sampling sound of hammers creates, at least momentarily, the image of "Whistle While You Work" before the guitars enter full bore and transform it into a full-blown prog jam with tight turns, momentary riffs all the while keeping a motorik drumbeat whether on a snare or a tom-tom. The whistling and wordless vocals that reflect another set of keyboard sounds add depth, humor, and warmth to this underground rainbow. On "Atlas," the title track from the band's last EP, the sound is one of futuristic dragon music à la the conceits of T. Rex without the clever lyrics. Here, the drum shuffle of so many great T. Rex tunes introduces a single guitar riff, warped by sonics and growled vocals that sound like a pig snorting. The intoxication of rhythm is inescapable, even as the David Seville Chipmunk-style vocals -- which could be backmasked -- create a progression for the tune to lift off from. It's tribal and slick, both at the same time. There is even a manipulated -- via the wonders of electronics -- "oo-ay-oo" from The Wizard of Oz scene where the evil Wicked Witch of the West henchmen sing as they march in guard formation around her dark palace. But this music is anything but dark. It's insistent, playful, and planned down to the distorted bass loop and pulsing guitar and keyboard notes that are layered on top in single- or double-note formations. Indeed, Mirrored is the place -- the very terrain -- where nerd science meets rock, and it's a gas. It's the amalgam of "merry melodies" that grabs the listener, even to the point of forgetting how many different arrays of percussion and electric string and keyboard instruments are being played on each and every tune. The sprint that is "Ddiamondd" could be in Christian Vander's Zeuhl dialect, with some of nastiest keyboard bass since the Beastie Boys' "Party's Gettin' Rough." One can hear strains of Gentle Giant in the way vocal harmonies are carefully layered to provide a counterpoint to the knotty riffs being executed. "Tonto" is an exception, where Asian, early American folk melody, and contrapuntal interplay create a long journey into some instrumental netherworld where rhythm and sound don't so much come to a conclusion as collide in variations of tempo and modal changes. "Rainbow" is the albums's longest and most chaotic track, yet it's utterly infectious listening as guitars roar and whoosh through the top of the mix. Rhythmic invention undercuts them and directs the shifts in tempo and even key. In contrast, "Bad Trails," with its synth loop providing a hypnotic inroad into Braxton's singing and shifting strands of guitar, bass, and synth lines, is a bona fide song. "Race: Out," the album's final cut, begins largely as an electronically manipulated exercise is backward tape manipulation; but this is all digital, folks, until the drums enter full bore announcing in short rolls on the toms that something else is about to occur -- and it does. Everything shifts into forward motion again on a dime and the instruments engage each other in a labyrinthine dance of cheap keyboard themes and tight, knotty guitar inventions. Pattern after pattern is introduced, played until it becomes rote, and then shifts itself, by only a couple of notes, into something entirely different as sounds, soundscapes, and instruments engage one another in call-and-response until a fade into silence. Mirrored is unlike any recording out there at the moment. It's loud, funny, and astonishingly sophisticated, and doesn't feel pretentious in the least. Never has the wall of electronic futurism sounded so organic or musical. The album's many influences offer only guide posts, as Battles have their own unique image of a sound universe that one can play in as well as be awed by. Mrs. Bluebird (Edit) The nearly one hour of listening contained within this CD covers much of the history of Eternity's Children, and in a far more coherent manner than any of the reissues of their LPs (which were mashed-together creations). One will get a much fuller and clearer picture of a sad-yet-glorious story here, working single-by-single, most of the material showing everything this group had going for it and also the missed opportunities that blighted their history. The first six songs, originally spread among three different labels -- "Time and Place" and "Can't Put a Thing Over Me," edgy, rocking but slightly trippy numbers issued on the tiny Apollo label; the cheerier and more ornate, Baroque pop sounds of "Wait and See" and "Rumors" on A&M Records (also the home of languid sounds like the Sandpipers' "Come Saturday Morning" at the time); and "Mrs. Bluebird" and "Little Boy" marking their debut with Capitol Records' Tower imprint, a label whose stable (including Pink Floyd) and output the parent company never had a clue as to what to do with. "Mrs. Bluebird" and "Little Boy" at least ended up folded into the group's debut album, as did the fuzz-guitar ornamented "Sunshine Among Us," showing a group developing a sound that was as poppy as it was hard and driving. But then the digressions begin a lackluster single like "Rupert White," which was almost as lugubrious as it was trippy, backed with the much better, thorough soul-influenced "Till I Hear It from You"; the sub-Spanky & Our Gang-style "I Wanna Be with You," which is still a great song (authored by new member Mike "Kid" McClain) and a fine showcase for their harmonies. And then we're on to "Sidewalks of the Ghetto," a fine, well-intended, earthily soulful product of the reconstituted group's stay at Chips Moman's American Studios, and after that it's back to sunshine pop on "Look Away." The group by that point had become a far more theoretical than an ongoing proposition, and it's here that the CD takes a turn into solo work by founding member Charles Ross III with the ethereal "My Happiness Day." The collection closes out with solo releases by Ross and lead singer Linda Lawley, a less-ornate alternate take of "Wait and See," and a different edit of "Mrs. Bluebird." The sound ranges from very good to excellent, and the annotation by Steve Stanley is extremely thorough and informative. Blues, Why Don't You Let Me Alone 25. Blue Rag In 12 Keys 26. Memories of You Recorded in 1968 and 1969, this record is by far the best way to get to know, love, and appreciate Eubie Blake, master of ragtime and gorgeous melodies. The taproot of jazz runs directly from Blake's generation up through all of those Eastern Seaboard ticklers, most significantly James P. Johnson and the school of what critics and historians have labeled Harlem stride piano. While his early historical recordings are wonderfully authentic, there exists no finer example of Eubie Blake on record than this double LP, covered with photos and informative liner notes and packed with Blake's incredibly dexterous performances. During his comeback as an aged wonder, there was a tendency for the public to regard him as little more than an entertaining curiosity. This attitude allowed for a superficial comprehension of Blake's background and served to trivialize his accomplished position in the evolution of 20th century music. 86 Years solves all of these problems. The first half of the program consists of rags. Blake plays them joyously, sometimes shouting and bursting into laughter as his hands work the keys. Eleven of these pieces are Blake originals, and on one or two occasions he prefaces the music with a story describing the circumstances under which the piece was composed. There's one by Joplin and two by John Philip Sousa, making for a strikingly accurate invocation of the musical scene within which Blake operated at the beginning of the 20th century. A portion of the album is specifically dedicated to theater music, and for most of these tunes Blake's old partner Noble Sissle is heard singing and chatting with the pianist. Whoever was responsible for recording these two elderly gentlemen and sharing the results with the public really did the world a great favor. Hearing them sing "If You've Never Been Vamped By a Brownskin, You've Never Been Vamped at All" is a rare treat. Finally, there are Blake's most harmonically advanced moments: a medley of James P. Johnson melodies, a stunning realization of Luckey Roberts' "Spanish Venus," and Blake's own masterpieces, unforgettably rendered: "Dixie Moon," "Blues, Why Don't You Let Me Alone," "Blue Rag in 12 Keys," and the lovely "Memories of You." This is Blake at his ancient best. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Artist: Fanakalo Title: Xangô (Afro-Jazz) Year Of Release: 1992; 2019 Label: Csmpro Genre: Afro-Brasilean Jazz Quality: MP3 320 kbps; FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 47:53 Total Size: 120; 260 MB Fanakalo is the name from a Creole in the mines of South Africa. The Swiss composer and creator, François Buttet, is a pure passionate of his long adopted roots. During his multiple voyages through Africa and Brazil, François Buttet brought all the colors and inspiration to Fanakalo, much appreciated by his public, his fans, as well as the enthusiastic orchestra, who interpretates the diversified musical notes and afro-Brazilian rhythms. All I Want Is You (4:51) The Amor Fati of Crazy Cloud is the second full-length release by California singer-songwriter Beau James Wilding. Infused with energies ranging from dark to silly to determined, this collection of original songs explores what it means to love one's self, love others, take ownership of the past and march on toward a better future, all the while getting lost in the mystery behind every breath. Many of the songs on this album were written when Beau first began writing music, about 2012 - 2014 but hadn't yet been recorded. It was recorded at The Formulation Room in Sacramento and features some percussion, ukulele, lap steel and melodica. There are a wide variety of musical styles expressed, and Beau was thrilled to work in a studio that allowed the time and space to experiment with production and instrumentation. All tracks are written by Beau James Wilding and all instruments are performed by him. Amor Fati is a Latin term which means "the love of fate", or the love of doing what one loves regardless of one's worldly success. Crazy Cloud epitomizes this concept. Clouds are just crazy enough to do their own thing, be themselves and literally go where the wind takes them. The Amor Fati of Crazy Cloud means to be yourself and do what you are meant to do, even when that means not fitting into a pre-ordained box. These songs are rugged and seething with the raw longing to live a well-rounded life to its fullest! Drawing on the aggression of punk and the storytelling of the ballad tradition, the music seems to gently nibble at one's earlobes with razor sharp incisors! Formed in the 1960s, it began by doing covers of Beatles songs. However, they soon had to change their style since the Romanian communist regime disliked any form of western culture. The communist regime suggested that all rock oriented bands should look for inspiration within the Romanian culture. These restrictions made the band's leader Nicolae Covaci search within the Romanian folklore, which gave them a unique sound.
