Bruce Langhorne - Guitar Michael Botts - Drums Dick Rosmini - Guitar, Keyboards Jerry Scheff - Bass Digitally remastered reissue of the 1969 solo album from the former vocalist for the Blues Project., a breath-taking folky singer/songwriter effort drenched in mystery and wonder. After the debut album from the Blues Project, early lead vocalist Tommy Flanders seemed to disappear off the face of the earth! a couple of singles appeared, actually recorded by his former band... and then this strange, muted example of what nowadays is referred to as Wyrd Folk. The faded, melancholy vibe herein is somewhat unsettling, as the ghost of a fairly straight acoustic Pop album is dimly apparent, and Tommy's voice still sounds occasionally as positive as it did on his early solo singles. SANTIAGO SUNRISE (4:43) Second solo album by James Dean Bradfield from the Manic Street Preachers. An ultra-vivid eulogy to a brilliant life cut short, Even in Exile is a beautiful collection of songs that loosely trace to story of the life and death of Chilean poet-singer-activist Victor Jara. At points pure and biographical, at others dreamlike and opaque, Bradfield sets words written specifically for the album by poet / playwright Patrick Jones to some of the most addictive and affecting melodies he's ever composed. Influenced by records and artists as diverse as Rush's Moving Pictures, The Bad Plus' Never Stop 2, Kamasi Washington's Heaven and Earth, The Welsh Connection by Man, John Cale's Walking On Locusts, Pink Floyd's Meddle, The Marble Index by Nico, The Beaten Generation by The The and the music of Alessandro Alessandroni, I Cantori Moderni and Violetta Parra, Even in Exile was played almost entirely by Bradfield and recorded at Door To The River Studio in South Wales. It features ten original compositions and a cover of Victor Jara's La Partida. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

The Andy Davis Band consists of life-long friends Andy Davis (lead singer/songwriter), Adam Leonard (rhythm guitar/vocals) and Mike "Reverend Rambo" Bates (drums); as well as Jason Roberts (lead guitar/vocals), Dave Gregory (bass guitar). When I Was Young (live) One of the most important bands originating from England's R&B scene during the early '60s, the Animals were second only to the Rolling Stones in influence among R&B-based bands in the first wave of the British Invasion. The Animals had their origins in a Newcastle-based group called the Kansas City Five, whose membership included pianist Alan Price, drummer John Steel, and vocalist Eric Burdon. Price exited to join the Kontours in 1962, while Burdon went off to London. The Kontours, whose membership included Bryan "Chas" Chandler, eventually were transmuted into the Alan Price R&B Combo, with John Steel joining on drums. Burdon's return to Newcastle in early 1963 heralded his return to the lineup. The final member of the combo, guitarist Hilton Valentine, joined just in time for the recording of a self-produced EP under the band's new name, the Animals. That record alerted Graham Bond to the Animals; he was likely responsible for pointing impresario Giorgio Gomelsky to the group. The Animals [Compilation]Gomelsky booked the band into his Crawdaddy Club in London, and they were subsequently signed by Mickie Most, an independent producer who secured a contract with EMI's Columbia imprint. A studio session in February 1964 yielded their Columbia debut single, "Baby Let Me Take You Home" (adapted from "Baby Let Me Follow You Down"), which rose to number 21 on the British charts. For years, it was rumored incorrectly that the Animals got their next single, "House of the Rising Sun," from Bob Dylan's first album, but it has been revealed that, like "Baby Let Me Take You Home," the song came to them courtesy of Josh White. In any event, the song -- given a new guitar riff by Valentine and a soulful organ accompaniment devised by Price -- shot to the top of the U.K. and U.S. charts early that summer. This success led to a follow-up session that summer, yielding their first long-playing record, The Animals. Their third single, "I'm Crying," rose to number eight on the British charts. The group compiled an enviable record of Top Ten successes, including "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place," along with a second album, Animal Tracks. In May of 1965, immediately after recording "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place," Alan Price left the band, citing fear of flying as the reason; subsequent biographies of the band have indicated that the reasons were less psychological. When "House of the Rising Sun" was recorded, using what was essentially a group arrangement, the management persuaded the band to put one person's name down as arranger. Price came up the lucky one, supposedly with the intention that the money from the arranger credit would be divided later on. The money was never divided, however, and as soon as it began rolling in, Price suddenly developed his fear of flying and exited the band. Others cite the increasing contentiousness between Burdon and Price over leadership of the group as the latter's reason for leaving. In any case, a replacement was recruited in the person of Dave Rowberry. AnimalismsIn the meantime, the group was growing increasingly unhappy with the material they were being given to record by manager Mickie Most. Not only were the majority of these songs much too commercial for their taste, but they represented a false image of the band, even if many were successful. "It's My Life," a number seven British hit and a similar smash in America, caused the Animals to terminate their association with Most and with EMI Records. They moved over to Decca/London Records and came up with a more forceful, powerful sound on their first album for the new label, Animalisms. The lineup shifts continued, however: Steel exited in 1966, after recording Animalisms, and was replaced by Barry Jenkins, formerly of the Nashville Teens. Chandler left in mid-1966 after recording "Don't Bring Me Down," and Valentine remained until the end of 1966, but essentially "Don't Bring Me Down" marked the end of the original Animals. Eric Is HereBurdon re-formed the group under the aegis of Eric Burdon and the New Animals, with Jenkins on drums, John Weider on guitar and violin, Danny McCulloch on bass, and Vic Briggs on guitar. He remained officially a solo act for a time, releasing a collection of material called Eric Is Here in 1967. As soon as the contract with English Decca was up, Burdon signed with MGM directly for worldwide distribution, and the new lineup made their debut in mid-1967. Eric Burdon and the New Animals embraced psychedelica to the hilt amid the full bloom of the Summer of Love. By the end of 1968, Briggs and McCulloch had departed, to be replaced by Burdon's old friend, keyboard player/vocalist Zoot Money, and his longtime stablemate, guitarist Andy Summers, while Weider switched to bass. Finally, in 1969, Burdon pulled the plug on what was left of the Animals. He hooked up with a Los Angeles-based group called War, and started a subsequent solo career. Before We Were So Rudely InterruptedThe original Animals reunited in 1976 for a superb album called Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted, which picked up right where Animalisms had left off a decade earlier and which was well-received critically but failed to capture the public's attention. In 1983, a somewhat longer-lasting reunion came about between the original members, augmented with the presence of Zoot Money on keyboards. The resulting album, Ark, consisting of entirely new material, was well received by critics and charted surprisingly high, and a world tour followed. By the end of the year and the heavy touring schedule, however, it was clear that this reunion was not going to be a lasting event. The quintet split up again, having finally let the other shoe drop on their careers and history, and walked away with some financial rewards, along with memories of two generations of rock fans cheering their every note. ~ Bruce Eder Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Many of those projects were quickly forgotten, but a handful have continued to inspire hushed reverence among surf aficionados. The latter category includes the Catalinas' lone album, originally released in 1964 and out of print for more than four decades. An all-star studio supergroup featuring legendary producer Terry Melcher, future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston and fabled Wrecking Crew members Hal Blaine, Jerry Cole, Steve Douglas, Leon Russell, Billy Strange and Tommy Tedesco, the Catalinas lived up to their impressive pedigree. In addition to rarely-heard tunes penned by Bobby Darin and a pre-Byrds Roger McGuinn, the album features potent versions of such surf and hot rod classics as "Surfin' U.S.A.," "Wipe Out," "Banzai Washout," "I Get Around" and "Summer Means Fun." Long a rare collector's item, Fun Fun Fun is now back in its original vinyl format, remastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on high-definition vinyl, with complete original cover art. Flowers of the Forest (5:04) The Eighteenth Day of May were a six-piece, London based group. Originally formed as an acoustic trio consisting of American Alison Brice (vocals, flute), Swede Richard Olson (acoustic guitar, harmonica and sitar) and Ben Phillipson (guitar and mandolin), they combined elements of traditional and contemporary folk with a psychedelic jangle. They spent the summer and autumn of 2003 bonding over Fairport Convention, The Incredible String Band, Steeleye Span, Sandy Denny and Trees all blending in with the Psychedelic music they already loved which was feeding into their home demo recordings. In early 2004 they went electric adding the rhythm section of Mark Nicholas (bass), and Karl Sabino (drums, autoharp) and then lastly ex-Saloon player Alison Cotton (viola). It was after appearing on a cover mount disc for the much missed 'It Comes With A Smile Magazine' that Andy Childs (Head of Hannibal Records /RYKO) fell in love with the band and continued the path of fellow legendary Hannibal head Joe Boyds policy of signing eclectic artists. Back in 2004 it felt like no one was making music like this - old weird folk songs, Americana, original psych folk, minimalist drones via great melodies and eclectic instrumentation. The result was a joyous, unfetted, fluid sound that in one moment could conjure up flashes of The Byrds or Fotheringay and then minutes later the spirit of The Velvet Underground would drift though the music. Live they would even cover artist from Spacemen 3 and The Brian Jonestown Massacre to Buffy Saint Marie to traditional English folk songs and would not be afraid to stamp their own identity on them. When it come to recording their first (and only) LP they were teaming with ideas and enthusiasm, buoyant from the attention of artists like Robyn Hitchcock and Peter Buck with whom they toured. The LP some 15 years later has not dated one bit, as with all good music it's qualities have and resonance have matured and endured, it's subtleties have become more apparent and beguiling. maybe 2005 just wasn't ready for a band playing contemporary English Folk Music. Added onto to this retrospective release are several excellent extra tracks, some of which were recorded for a second album that they were never able to complete. Hard to imagine it would have been even better than the first but listen to the tracks recorded and you can only feel sadness that it never happened. Much Love to Andy Childs for his enthusiasm and love for The 18th Day Of May and for his writings. 20. Artist: The Grass Roots Title: Lovin' Things Year Of Release: 1969/2020 Label: Geffen Records Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Pop Rock, Sunshine Pop Quality: 320 kbps | FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 00:36:43 Total Size: 86 mb | 231 mb Tracklist: 01. Lovin' Things 02. The River Is Wide 03. (You Gotta) Live For Love 04. City Women 05. What Love Is Made Of 06. Pain 07. I Get So Excited 08. The Days Of Pearly Spencer 09. Baby, You Do It So Well 10. I Can't Help But Wonder, Elisabeth 11. Fly Me To Havana 12. Midnight Confessions 13. Bella Linda True to form, Lovin' Things, the fourth album by the Grass Roots, contains another nugget in "The River Is Wide," a tremendous pop tune fusing a mainstream '60s sound with Phil Spector innovations. It's a wonderful Steve Barri production, their sixth hit record, and a song as brilliant as any of their first seven that hit the Top 40. Like labelmates Three Dog Night, this crew found great songs when producer Steve Barri and his former partner, P.F. Sloan, weren't writing them for the group. Unlike Three Dog Night, though, the band didn't pack an album with outside material poised for Top 40, and Lovin' Things is a perfect example of the two sides of this group. Larry Knechtel, Hal Blaine, Joe Osborn, and other name session folk are no doubt on the first two songs -- the title track, "Lovin' Things," and the hit, "The River Is Wide." Both songs carry big sound and great Rob Grill vocals, Warren Entner adding his fine voice to "The River Is Wide" as well, and though it was the fourth weakest of their 14 hits, it's still one of their best. There are two originals from guitarist Warren Entner and singer Grill, the enjoyable "(You Gotta) Live for Love" and a very interesting "Fly Me to Havana." "Havana" works because the band puts a Ray Davies/Kinks riff from "Till the End of the Day" into a mix with guitar sounds straight from the Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction." Consider that had the band issued more of this highly regarded '60s sound along with their slick radio hits, they would have crossed over to the realm where music by the Seeds and Chocolate Watchband continues to dwell: sacred territory. Though P.F. Sloan was gone by this point, they do cover two of his songs, "City Women" and "I Can't Help But Wonder, Elisabeth," as well as a Sloan/Barri title, "Baby, You Do It So Well." P.F. Sloan himself became an enigmatic minor-league Brian Wilson, in more ways than one, and adds a hipness that should make these albums more cherished in collectors circles than they are. Bob Mann's song "Pain" ends side one, and dramatically different from the group's material, as well as the Sloan and Barri stuff, it adds yet another dimension to this quirky made-for-record-company group. Let's face it, the Grass Roots were an effort by Dunhill Records to create a kind of Monkees without a television show, music produced to climb the Top 40. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, despite the crass commercialism behind the Monkees, the band developed their own pop legacy from years of touring after their hit show. The problem with the Grass Roots was that they could have taken the original business plan and used it as a platform to become a very hip and very chic item. Just listen to the Gordon/Grant tune "I'm So Excited," which starts off side two, then play Ian Hunter's song of the same name which ends side two of his debut solo album six years after this in 1975. It's the exact melody opening each chorus, only Mick Ronson and Ian Hunter bring it all the way home. In order to carry a strange album track like "The Days of Pearly Spencer," Warren Entner needed to be as big a personality as an Ian Hunter, and he isn't. From singing on this album, he went on to manage Quiet Riot, and the members of the Grass Roots never managed to create an identity as strong as Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, Davey Jones, and Mike Nesmith. Heck, even Dale "Buffin" Griffin and Peter Overend Watts from Mott had more name recognition in rock circles, and it's that lack of personality which held back a band with over a dozen hit records. As creative as these Steve Barri-produced 11 tracks are, more hit songs were necessary for this LP's survival. That's what this band was all about, and the photos of Grill, Entner, Coonce, and Bratton on the back of the album just didn't register with those who heard a little masterpiece like "The River Is Wide." 21. Artist: The Grass Roots Title: Move Along Year Of Release: 1972/2020 Label: Geffen Records Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Pop Rock, Sunshine Pop Quality: 320 kbps | FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 00:40:45 Total Size: 95 mb | 279 mb Tracklist: 01. The Runaway 02. Monday Love 03. Anyway The Wind Blows 04. Runnin' Just To Get Her Home Again 05. Two Divided By Love 06. Someone To Love 07. Face The Music 08. Move Along 09. One Word 10. Only One 11. Glory Bound 12. Sooner Or Later 13. Love Is What You Make It The final three Top 40 hits for the Grass Roots materialize on Move Along, a consistent album under the aegis of original co-producer Steve Barri with the band's future producers Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter writing two of the new hits. Slick arrangements and big production eliminate the charm of the earlier recordings, where P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri gave the group a nice mixture of the frosting poured atop once folky Simon & Garfunkel tracks by Clive Davis and the Top 40 shine Mickey Most gave to Herman's Hermits. That Sloan and Barri worked on Peter Noone's Hold On movie soundtrack, including their composition "A Must to Avoid" and an earlier version of "Where Were You When I Needed You," is a little proof of how they steered the original Grassroots. Peter Noone hit in January of 1966 with his Sloan/Barri material, the Grassroots in July of that year. The name evolved to separate the two words, becoming The Grass Roots, and six years on this very formula album has little surprise and none of the sparkle of the Sloan/Barri days, but it is not without merit. "Two Divided By Love" was a nice sequel to "Sooner or Later," which was a nice sequel to "Temptation Eyes," but the formula needed reshuffling. "The Runway," a variation on "The Letter" theme, is a clone of "Two Divided By Love"; it charted nine months after "Two Divided By Love," with the final track on this album, "Glory Bound," hitting the Top 40 in between (in March of 1972). The big hook of "Glory Bound" sounds like a precursor to latter-day '70s pop, surprising in that it has elements of what Lambert/Potter would bring to the Righteous Brothers in 1974, but this particular tune was the one co-write by Steve Barri, a departure from the cleverness he brought to earlier material. It's a far cry from Barri's "Things I Should Have Said," and that's the problem with Move Along. Where the fun of the early hits was their diversity and ingenuity, one can't help but get the feeling that this is an excellent bar band that somehow got a recording contract. Dennis Provisor wrote or co-wrote six of the 11 tracks, including "Glory Bound," and he just doesn't have the spirit that Sloan/Barri or Lambert/Potter provide. The difference is staggering. It's not to say that a tune like "Runnin' Just to Get Her Home Again" by Warren Entner and Dennis Provisor is that bad, but when one realizes that Entner would be managing Quiet Riot a decade later, Move Along is to the first Grassroots album what the latter-day Mystery album by Vanilla Fudge was to their original disc: a departure from the thing that made the band so significant in the first place. Dennis Provisor is not even given credit on the back of the album, though his contribution here was as pivotal as singer Rob Grill and guitarist Warren Entner. A better offering than the self-titled album for Haven/Capitol, and Grill is in better voice than on his solo effort, Uprooted. Had they sought songs with the durability of "The River Is Wide" or the charm of "Bella Linda," it would have been a plus with the three hits included here, and could have insured a better place in rock history for this interesting and still listenable project. 22. Artist: Treva Blomquist Title: Snakes & Saints Year Of Release: 2020 Label: Independent Genre: Americana, Indie Folk, Singer/Songwriter Quality: 320 / FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 34:03 Total Size: 79 / 215 Mb Tracklist: 01. Gift (4:15) Treva Blomquist is one of those artists who refuses to be typecast within any one specific genre. Of course, that can prove to be a handicap at times, given that radio programmers and critics in particular like to have a catch-all that helps define a niche or at least makes it possible to categorize the music in a simple and succinct way. On the other hand, a musician like Blomquist ultimately proves more compelling simply because she defies that particular notion and makes music that isn't beholden to any specific style or sensibility. So while the penalty she pays may find her somewhat out of step with a contemporary trend or trajectory, the intrigue and imagination she creates instead makes her all the more intriguing. Which brings us to her new album, Snakes & Saints, which, as the title suggests, brings some sense of disparity. Blomquist shares a decided sense of passion and purpose in her vocals, but sung above a persistent, percolating pulse, the music takes on its own otherworldly ambiance, one that adds urgency without detracting from her emotional intent. On songs such as "Strong," "Shape I'm In," "Sugar," and "Woke Up," the music ably expresses the sentiments shared so succinctly in the titles, creating a dynamic which can billow from a hushed plea to a full flourish. It can be a bit eerie at times - the decidedly descriptive "Anger" proves a prime example - but at other times, particularly on a song such as "Sorry," it's her vulnerability and sensitivity that find their way to the fore. Taken in tandem, it's that beguiling allure that provides the most resilient impression overall, a captivating and compelling sound that rings with yearning and optimism, hope and deliberation, all in equal measure. If Blomquist is trying to reconcile her desires and determine her way forward, there's never any sense that she's faltering at any point along the way. For all her circumspect, it's clear throughout that she's both fully engaged and readily equipped to pull herself forward, whether the path is fully defined or still needed to be navigated. Blomquist herself has said that these songs are about the need to navigate that road to redemption. Thus, with Snakes & Saints she makes it clear she's figuring out how best to avoid the former and find whatever comfort she can in the latter. If these songs are any indication, she's able to discern the difference. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]
