Hunting Season (3:42) 10. Dawn Chorus (1:48) 11. Little Lies (5:17) On their 2020 album, the congenial, imaginative Lebanese three-piece have grown noticeably and achieve a rare feat: to welcome you with open arms upon the first encounter and lead you deeper into the multi-layered depths of their work with every new visit. The magical first impression lasts throughout this string of gloriously mellow autumn-coloured pop gems, but the true music connoisseur with a taste for genre-crossing experiences will find bliss on each and every intense dive into their world, with every trip underneath the surface bringing to light new treasures. Almost completely removed from the musical roots of their home country, Julia Sabra, Pascal Semerdjian and Marwahn Tohme explore the vast stylistic territories of the European and American continents, while their English lyrics talk about their everyday life in the Lebanese capital Beirut. The vocals delivering them are amazingly smooth, with crystal clear and mysteriously breathy moments. But aside from the haunting energy of the charming lead vocalist's angelic voice, the instrumental parts are impressively creative, expressive and varied with a magnetic pull, giving two-minute gems and epics lasting five minutes or more their breathtakingly colourful diversity which will surprise you even after several spins. At first, you will hear uncompromisingly distorted edginess, dry The Cure-twang, eclectic guitars, playful drums and silky, heart-warming, multi-layered vocal clouds wafting through the room. But soon you come across additional layers of beautifully placed sound effects and exciting key work that combine to a rich and emotive sound that transcends genre limits - an irresistible invitation to immerse yourself in the elements. Shockwave Rider (03:59) Royal Trux announce new compilation 'Quantum Entanglement'. The new collection will be released for this year's Record Store Day Black Friday, November 29th. It's a 14 track compilation spanning their career catalogue. The album follows their widely acclaimed comeback album 'White Stuff' that was released in March. Jennifer Herrema and Neil Hagerty haven't lost their ethos yet and seem to be as energised as ever. Their 14-year-old hiatus left no residue and they have blown new wind into their career. Since their debut in '88 they've been reshaping the rock world and creating new ways to make music. Still as eclectic as ever they started using new methods for this album. Trux have re-imagined songs and will combine it with songs never heard before with a refreshing new look. It's not to be seen as a greatest hits album, seemingly, but rather a trail blaze of new visions of certain tracks. It is remastered for the future, a new album that contains all the right songs. Mr. Brightside (Original Demo) 17. When You Were Young (Calvin Harris Remix) 18. Be Still (Album Version) Almost ten years after "Mr. Brightside" helped turn the Killers into new millennial rock sensations, the time has come for a hits collection. Calling the compilation Direct Hits a punning title that feels timeless but has rarely been used before, a nifty encapsulation of the group's style and attributes the Killers cannily use the singles-centric conceit to showcase the band at their overblown best, emphasizing their arena-sized neo-new wave just slightly over their Springsteenisms. Both are on display on the two new songs "Shot at the Night" and "Just Another Girl," songs that sound as if U2, Springsteen, and the Cars created a supergroup in 1988 but the main benefit of Direct Hits, especially for those listeners who have always doubted the skills of the Killers, is how the operatic ambitions of Sam's Town feel not so extravagant when bookended by selections from Day & Age and Battle Born. All three of the albums which are represented by three cuts a piece sound strong here but what really has lasted are those singles from 2004's Hot Fuss, especially the initial breakthroughs "Mr. Brightside" and "All These Things That I've Done," which now seem to capture a particular moment in time and yet also transcend it. Brian Eno - Up With The Birds AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine Coldplay finally surrender to their essential good nature on Mylo Xyloto, their fifth album and first to ditch all pretense of brooding melancholia. Which isn't to say the band doesn't drift along on some pleasingly spacy atmospheres conjured by longtime producer Brian Eno: there's still a veneer of classy disaffection that inevitably dissipates due to the relentless sunniness of Chris Martin and company. Eno's echoes and ambience -- the only things that still mark Coldplay as anything resembling progressive -- positively sparkle when they meet the band's bright, chipper melodies, yet Coldplay's innate good manners restrain the album, keeping it just this side of a rush of candied pop. Such politeness can verge on the dull -- criminally so when they bring Rihanna in for "Princess of China," a duet so toothless she may as well have stayed home -- but Mylo Xyloto has a leg up on other Coldplay records for this simple reason: they're no longer attempting to mimic U2's portentous piety. They've embraced their schoolboy selves and are simply singing songs of love and good cheer, albeit on a grand scale that somehow seems smaller due to the group's insuppressible niceness. Chris Martin - Swallowed in the Sea [4:32] 12. Chris Martin - Twisted Logic [4:11] 13. Chris Martin - Til Kingdom Come AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine After Radiohead stubbornly refused to accept the mantle of world's biggest and most important rock band by releasing the willfully strange rocktronica fusion Kid A in 2000, Coldplay stepped up to the plate with their debut, Parachutes. Tasteful, earnest, introspective, anthemic, and grounded in guitars, the British quartet was everything Radiohead weren't but what the public wanted them to be, and benefited from the Oxford quintet's decision to abandon rock stardom for arcane art rock. Parachutes became a transatlantic hit and 2002's sequel, A Rush of Blood to the Head, consolidated their success by being bigger and better than Parachutes, positioning Coldplay to not be just the new Radiohead, but the new U2: a band that belongs to the world but whose fans believe that the music is for them alone. To that end, Coldplay's third album, X&Y -- slightly delayed so it follows Rush of Blood by nearly three years, but that's no longer than the time separating OK Computer and Kid A, or The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree -- is designed to be the record that elevates Coldplay to the major leagues, where they are at once the biggest and most important band in the world. It's deliberate and sleek, cinematic and pristine, hip enough to sample Kraftwerk and blend in fashionable retro-'80s post-punk allusions without altering the band's core. Indeed, X&Y is hardly a bold step forward but rather a consolidation of Coldplay's strengths, particularly their skill at crafting surging, widescreen epics. But if X&Y highlights their attributes it also brings Coldplay's weaknesses into sharp relief. Forget the fact that they, by any stretch of the imagination, do not rock -- rocking is simply against their nature. They are a meditative band, reflecting on their emotions instead of letting them go in a cathartic blast of noise and rhythm. This isn't a problem -- after all, there have been plenty of great bands that do not rock & roll -- but their terminal politeness does cripple their music, preventing it from being as majestic as its aspirations. Coldplay is well scrubbed and well behaved, possessing a textbook education in classic rock and the good sense to never stretch any farther than needed. They are the perfect middlebrow rock band -- clean, pristine, and rational, seemingly smart since they never succumb to pounding, primal riffs, but also not weird enough to be genuine art rock. It's ambitious, yet its ambitions are modest, not risky, so their ambitions can be fulfilled without breaking a sweat. And since their sweeping yet subdued theatricality does recall the more majestic moments of Radiohead and U2, they have won millions of fans, but another crucial reason that Coldplay have a broad appeal is that lead singer/songwriter Chris Martin never tackles any large issues, preferring to endlessly examine his feelings. Like on Parachutes and Rush of Blood, all the songs on X&Y are ruminations on Martin's doubts, fears, hopes, and loves. His words are earnest and vague, so listeners can identify with the underlying themes in the songs, and his plain, everyman voice, sighing as sweet as a schoolboy, is unthreatening and unassuming, so it's all the easier for listeners to project their own emotions into the song. But for as impeccable as X&Y is -- and, make no mistake, it's a good record, crisp, professional, and assured, a sonically satisfying sequel to A Rush of Blood to the Head -- it does reveal that Martin's solipsism is a dead-end, diminishing the stature of the band. Where U2 is big in sound, scope, ambition, and intent, Coldplay is ultimately big music about small things, and even if X&Y is a strong, accomplished album, its limited, narcissistic point of view is what prevents the quartet from inheriting the title of the biggest and most important band in the world. Goodnight Line-up:: Roddy Woomble (Vocals) Rod Jones (Guitar) Colin Newton (Drums) Andrew Mitchell (Bass) Luciano Rossi (Keyboards/Piano) Idlewild are a Scottish rock band formed in Edinburgh in 1995. The band's line-up consists of Roddy Woomble (lead vocals), Rod Jones (guitar, backing vocals), Colin Newton (drums), Andrew Mitchell (bass), Allan Stewart (guitar) and Luciano Rossi (keyboards). To date, Idlewild have released nine full-length studio albums. Initially, Idlewild's sound was faster and more dissonant than many of their 1990s indie rock contemporaries. However, it developed over time from an edgy and angular sound (as heard in their early material-once described by the NME as "the sound of a flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs") to a sweeping, melodic rock sound as displayed on The Remote Part and Warnings/Promises. In 2010, the band entered an indefinite hiatus, but reunited in late 2013 to record their seventh album, Everything Ever Written, released in 2015. This was followed by Interview Music in 2019. Their last record, Thr!!!er, lived up to its title and this record is all-thriller, no-filler too, jammed with songs that almost dare the listener not to dance. Recorded and produced by the band with help from James Ford, Jim Eno, Ewan Pearson, Chris Coady, and Chris Woodhouse, and culled from an intense session of songwriting done by driving force Nic Offer and bassist Rafael Cohen, the album was recorded in studios around America. Despite the various locales and collaborators involved, the album is focused and tight as it deals out pounding grooves and thundering basslines. Add in wire-tight guitar, wobbling old synths, and Offer's unhinged vocals and it's vintage !!! with a little extra energy added. Song after song hits like a punch, sometimes a knockout blow (the wall-shaking "Freedom! '15" or the blindingly bright pop song "Every Little Bit Counts"), sometimes a sneaky slap (the low-key "Funk (I Got This)" or the slinky, nocturnal dreamer "Sick Ass Moon"), and occasionally just a weird, drunken master attack (the oddball disco freakout "I Feel So Free (Citation Needed)") or a clinch (the smoothly sleek R&B ballad "Lucy Mongoosey"). No matter the technique involved, by the time the album is over, listeners will be picking themselves up off the canvas, not covered with bruises, but maybe winded and with sore feet from all the dancing. By this point in a band's career, it would be expected, almost accepted, if they started to calcify and just crank out the same record over and over. !!! have yet to reach that point, not even close. There's enough vigorous energy pulsing through the grooves to make As If come fully to life, enough imagination in the arrangements to always keep people guessing, and hooks huge enough to capture anyone within the general vicinity. Thr!!!er felt like it might have been !!!'s peak achievement; As If makes the case that they may only be getting started. Hey Now 02. Stay Awake 03. Shyer 04. Wasting My Young Years 05. Sights 06. Strong 07. Nightcall 08. Metal & Dust 09. Interlude (Live) 10. Flickers 11. If You Wait 12. Help 13. Darling Are You Gonna Leave Me 14. Disclosure feat. London Grammar - Help Me Lose My Mind 15. High Life 16. Maybe 17. When We Were Young English trio London Grammar have quietly amassed a body of atmospheric, electronic pop material since they first posted "Metal & Dust" on the internet in 2012. Partnered with an appearance on Disclosure's Mercury-nominated album Settle, the Nottingham University alumni had set the internet hype machine in motion, less than a year after forming. With obvious nods to the unfussy, reverbed guitar motifs of the xx, alongside Hannah Reid's beautiful, emotive vocal ability which rises and falls with an alarmingly disarming effect the album is a practice in refrain, where each song is pushed to the brink of an inevitable climax and achingly, no further. The percussive production, synths, and basslines provided by multi-instrumentalist Dot Major, build on this sense of drama and urgency and are displayed perfectly in one of the highlights of the record, "Wasting My Young Years." Its throbbing chorus is chastened by the slow-burning synths and guitars that come together with stunning results when coupled with Reid's vocal delivery. The obvious confidence Reid has in her own voice belies the apparent vulnerability in the words she sings throughout, and the piano ballad "Strong" is testament to the loneliness and heartbreak that encapsulates the brooding feel of the album, which conflicts with the almost upbeat, danceable moments scattered amongst "Flickers" and "Stay Awake." They pay homage to their electronic influences mid-album with a rework of Kavinsky's "Nightcall" that unfolds gently into one of the most boisterous cuts on the record. It's no surprise that Reid's strong vocals are at the forefront of London Grammar's sound, and her voice dominates their music in much the same way as Florence Welch's does in Florence + the Machine. However, although at times they come close to overshadowing the subtle instrumentation provided by Major and Dan Rothman, it's actually the intrinsic balance between the contributions of all three that defines their sound. 20. 01. 21. Artist: Freeholm Wilson Title: Children of June Year Of Release: 2015 Label: Self-released Genre: Indie Rock, Psychedelic Pop Quality: 320 / FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 39:37 Total Size: 92 / 272 Mb Tracklist: 1. Autumn Child (3:25) Ironically enough just prior to popping on Children of June, the debut record of North London singer/ songwriter and self-described one-man band, Freeholm Wilson, I was binge listening to The Brian Jonestown Massacre for a different venture I am working on (one cannot lie about these things). And as I walked around my apartment listening to Children of June hoping that the muse would visit me and help me write this article I found myself at moments wondering whether or not I had switched off The Brian Jonestown Massacre at all. Such are the similarities between the two, in certain instances at least. There are of course other folk and Americana greats that one hears the nuances of on Children of June, Dylan in spots, The Beatles in others, smidges of Springsteen, echoes of Brian Wilson helmed Beach Boys records, and the harmonies of Crosby Stills and Nash. Despite all these influences Children of June never comes off sounding like a covers record or an ode of any sort. References to the aforementioned famous names serve only to give context to Freeholm Wilson's ascribed genres instead of me relentlessly beating readers over the head with blunt force adjectives. A large part of what makes Wilson's sound so wholly inviting and admirably nostalgic is his use of what these days are referred to as antique equipment such as a Fostex R8 reel to reel as well as an ex BBC Studer A807. Wilson recorded Children of June using one microphone - a 1960s Coles 4038 ribbon mic-which he salvaged from the decommissioned studios of the BBC World Service. These antique soundscapes do not go unnoticed. On the opening track "Night Train" and the following "Be There" Wilson employs that Brian Jonestown musical rhetoric of the bluesy finger picked guitar layered over the tumbleweed-blown melody and repetitious thunderclaps of tambourine. But he doesn't let this trend continue on too long digging into a moodier psychedelic realm on "House by the Sea." Wilson's penchant for Dylan on the acoustic instrumental "Shelly's Colours" and the rollicking "To the Country" though the latter's vocals, lush and hushed, sound more Paul Simon than Dylan perhaps even more so on the crushingly beautiful "California's Mine." Wilson returns to the raucous folk-stomp later on "Run Back to Me" and closes out Children of June with the acoustic psych-pop pleasures of "Autumn Child." With the resurgence of psych tinged anything finding its way into the music of some of today's biggest indie bands, it's nice to listen to an artist, yet unknown, who is making this kind of music in its most organic form, using the same tools his predecessors used so long ago, and proving them to still be worthy, if not better. If you're one of those types who like to brag that you were listening to an artist before they became hugely successful then you should be all over Freeholm Wilson's Children of June. You can thank me later. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

The Other Side of You (Reprise) (2:40) Aimee Lay's latest album, The Other Side Of You was recorded as more of an organic experiment than as a straight ahead studio album. The goal was to write and record something as true to being as fully expressed creatively as anything she'd ever done in the past. This intention became even more critical when her father suddenly developed a mysteriously complex illness and then passed away before the album was completed. Aimee draws upon many influences on this album, predominantly 60s and 70s folk, psychedelia, garage rock and pop elements. "I wanted to make an album like my own "Forever Changes" by Love; an album that had many different moods, sounds, elements, types of songs. but all relevant to the experience of being alive as a human in this world, with all of the endlessly varying emotions that accompany this experience. My father's death included a lot of traumatic psychological mysteries as well as physical illnesses. This left both myself and my family with a sense of deep existential crisis and PTSD. I found myself in an urgent search for spiritual understanding, the seeking of and critical need for its discovery and possibility of redemption. The title track, "The Other Side Of You" was written about both the search to understand the shadow sides of another as well the very shadow sides within oneself".
