Battles - Race : Out AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek It's official: in 2007, it's all come full circle. Prog rock has made its way into the indie scene. Battles' Mirrored, their debut full-length after three EPs, makes that plain. Messrs. John Stanier of Helmet and Tomahawk, guitarist/keyboardist Ian Williams of Don Caballero and Storm & Stress, guitarist David Konopka of Lynx, and avant solo musician Tyondai Braxton have constructed an album that combines the best of Van Der Graaf Generator, Magma, Krautrock, and math rock, while coming up with something that stands so far out on the fringe that it is in a league of its own. That so much of this music is created via the magic of software and combined with one- or two-note keyboard and guitar patterns makes it the Philip K. Dick equivalent of modern rock. The intro, "Race: In," comes flying out of the box with a series of rim shots and repetitive guitar lines before Braxton comes whistling into the front end. This is a Disney tune for Snow White by the Seven Dwarfs run amok. The abstract patterns introduced by the keyboards and bassline serve to underscore the melody, complex though it may be, and the sampling sound of hammers creates, at least momentarily, the image of "Whistle While You Work" before the guitars enter full bore and transform it into a full-blown prog jam with tight turns, momentary riffs all the while keeping a motorik drumbeat whether on a snare or a tom-tom. The whistling and wordless vocals that reflect another set of keyboard sounds add depth, humor, and warmth to this underground rainbow. On "Atlas," the title track from the band's last EP, the sound is one of futuristic dragon music à la the conceits of T. Rex without the clever lyrics. Here, the drum shuffle of so many great T. Rex tunes introduces a single guitar riff, warped by sonics and growled vocals that sound like a pig snorting. The intoxication of rhythm is inescapable, even as the David Seville Chipmunk-style vocals -- which could be backmasked -- create a progression for the tune to lift off from. It's tribal and slick, both at the same time. There is even a manipulated -- via the wonders of electronics -- "oo-ay-oo" from The Wizard of Oz scene where the evil Wicked Witch of the West henchmen sing as they march in guard formation around her dark palace. But this music is anything but dark. It's insistent, playful, and planned down to the distorted bass loop and pulsing guitar and keyboard notes that are layered on top in single- or double-note formations. Indeed, Mirrored is the place -- the very terrain -- where nerd science meets rock, and it's a gas. It's the amalgam of "merry melodies" that grabs the listener, even to the point of forgetting how many different arrays of percussion and electric string and keyboard instruments are being played on each and every tune. The sprint that is "Ddiamondd" could be in Christian Vander's Zeuhl dialect, with some of nastiest keyboard bass since the Beastie Boys' "Party's Gettin' Rough." One can hear strains of Gentle Giant in the way vocal harmonies are carefully layered to provide a counterpoint to the knotty riffs being executed. "Tonto" is an exception, where Asian, early American folk melody, and contrapuntal interplay create a long journey into some instrumental netherworld where rhythm and sound don't so much come to a conclusion as collide in variations of tempo and modal changes. "Rainbow" is the albums's longest and most chaotic track, yet it's utterly infectious listening as guitars roar and whoosh through the top of the mix. Rhythmic invention undercuts them and directs the shifts in tempo and even key. In contrast, "Bad Trails," with its synth loop providing a hypnotic inroad into Braxton's singing and shifting strands of guitar, bass, and synth lines, is a bona fide song. "Race: Out," the album's final cut, begins largely as an electronically manipulated exercise is backward tape manipulation; but this is all digital, folks, until the drums enter full bore announcing in short rolls on the toms that something else is about to occur -- and it does. Everything shifts into forward motion again on a dime and the instruments engage each other in a labyrinthine dance of cheap keyboard themes and tight, knotty guitar inventions. Pattern after pattern is introduced, played until it becomes rote, and then shifts itself, by only a couple of notes, into something entirely different as sounds, soundscapes, and instruments engage one another in call-and-response until a fade into silence. Mirrored is unlike any recording out there at the moment. It's loud, funny, and astonishingly sophisticated, and doesn't feel pretentious in the least. Never has the wall of electronic futurism sounded so organic or musical. The album's many influences offer only guide posts, as Battles have their own unique image of a sound universe that one can play in as well as be awed by. Gravenhurst - Saints [4:02] 02. Gravenhurst - She Dances [3:59] 03. Gravenhurst - Hollow Men [4:12] 04. Gravenhurst - Song Among The Pine [4:06] 05. Gravenhurst - Trust [4:15] 06. Gravenhurst - The Collector AllMusic Review by Heather Phares As good as Gravenhurst was at chronicling late-night desolation on Fires in Distant Buildings, it still doesn't prepare listeners for the leap they take on The Western Lands. More focused songwriting and a big sound bring the delicate features of their music into sharp relief, keeping the intimacy of their earlier work while making it much more immediate. The album's production and arrangements really are remarkable -- The Western Lands sounds polished without being slick, and underscores the drama in Gravenhurst's songs without drowning them in atmosphere. Wide-open musical landscapes dominate, especially on the title track's dark, Friends of Dean Martinez-eqsue twang and "Trust"'s hazy take on tough '60s pop. In fact, most of the album is surprisingly poppy, given the band's signature restraint. However, the excellent, whammy bar-breaking shoegazer riffs on "Hollow Men" are undeniably, head-bangingly catchy, as is the buoyant cover of Fairport Convention's "Farewell, Farewell," which turns Liege & Lief's wistful folk into windswept dream pop. Interestingly, the band's own "Song Among the Pine," with its meticulous acoustic guitar and invocation-like lyrics, is closer to British folk -- and closer to Gravenhurst's traditional sound. Songs like this and "Grand Union Canal," which glides along on jazzy drumming, show that the band is still masterful at creating moods. The album's added focus has also sharpened the band's songwriting; "She Dances" begins with a chugging, hypnotic riff that sounds a little sleazy and dangerous, then Nick Talbot sketches out the regret behind it ("'I need new clothes,' she thinks, 'new skin; a mind I can bear to live in.'"). "Hourglass"' lament "The past is a strange place/But I want it back," set to a looping guitar line, is just as heartbreakingly simple. The Western Lands is bookended with two of Talbot's prettiest, and most unsettling, character sketches: the chilly "Saints" finds Talbot singing "I will trace my blood line" with serenely sinister intent, while "The Collector" sets a serial killer's tale to the album's most beautiful melody. It's an old trick, but the band does it perfectly, as Gravenhurst does most things on The Western Lands. This is the kind of album you can live with and hear new things in with each listen, and proves that the album is an art form that still has plenty of life in it. Year Of Release: 2010 Label: Warp Records Genre: Electronic, Rock, Indie Rock Quality: 320 kbps / FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 00:40:49 Total Size: 95.8 MB / 282.8 MB Tracklist: [4:55] 1. !!! - AM/FM [5:39] 2. !!! - The Most Certain Sure [3:50] 3. !!! - Wannagain Wannagain [5:06] 4. !!! - Jamie, My Intentions Are Bass [4:25] 5. !!! - Steady As The Sidewalk Cracks [2:48] 6. !!! - Hollow [3:21] 7. !!! - Jump Back [5:45] 8. !!! - Even Judas Gave Jesus A Kiss [4:59] 9. !!! - The Hammer AllMusic Review by Tim Sendra By the time of their fourth album Strange Weather, Isn't It? !!! had been making records for almost a decade. Not too many bands can keep going for that long and continue to make records that have all the energy and quality they began with, but !!! have managed it. While many of the alumni of the dance punk boom of the early 2000s have faded away or changed their sound or just plain lost their way, !!! remain as good as ever and Strange Weather is full of the kind of ferocious and funky dance punk that they've always done. Taking barely any pauses for breath, the record is a headlong rush from beginning to end filled with exactly what fans of the group will want to hear. Unlike on their last album 2007's Myth Takes there are no glam rock beats or ballads here, just floor filling jams mixed together like a stellar DJ set. Kicking off with one of their catchiest songs to date "AM/FM" and following it up with the dubbed up, hypnotic "The Most Certain Sure" is a great way to sequence the record. It plugs you right into the !!! aesthetic and lets you know that there has been no drop off at all. Indeed the best tracks here equal the best tracks the group has done to date; apart from the two songs mentioned already, the slinky, hooky "Jamie, My Intentions Are Bass," the bubbling "Even Judas Gave Jesus a Kiss" and the hard charging "The Hammer" will all fight for space on !!!'s Greatest Hits. Unlike their most similarly talented contemporary LCD Soundsystem, they don't have the kind of songs that jump out at you and have you singing along. Instead, their songs work more insidiously, creeping into your brain on the back of the bass lines and Nic Offer's buried-in-the-mix-but-insistent vocals. It's a subtle kind of pop music and while it might work best on a dance floor, as a whole the record works well under headphones. Strange Weather may get some static for not being groundbreaking or risk taking but that's okay. It's just !!! at their best and that's good enough. The Sabres Of Paradise - Haunted Dancehall AllMusic Review by Sean Cooper The Sabres' second album is a conceptual manifesto of sorts, accompanied by a loose song-by-song narrative of descriptions written by the group. According to Weatherall, they initially hired Scottish novelist Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting) to pen the notes, but, unhappy with the results, threw together their own versions minutes before the record was shipped off to be pressed. Lots of thin, bubbly, minimalist ambient and mid-tempo breakbeat, with quirky, occasionally half-thought-out tracks aided by production assistance from Geoff Barrow (Portishead) and A. Carthy (Mr. Scruff). Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Prana Crafter - High Country Dynamo (8:31) The American Primitive or solo acoustic instrumental guitar genre has its share of tragic heroes, namely pioneers John Fahey and Robbie Basho, but the most heartbreaking for many in recent years was the premature death of the astonishing Jack Rose, a musician probably not even peaking creatively when a heart attack took him at the age of just thirty-eight. Jack has left a legacy of music and devotees, with many across all levels of the genre these days citing him as their ultimate influence. Suffice to say, players like Daniel Bachman, Matt Sowell, Eli Winter and Ryley Walker would be very different musicians had it not been for Rose's music entering their lives. Glenn Jones has also been hugely influenced by Rose through the years, both as a close friend and musical inspiration, and it's Jack's name he will undoubtedly mention at every one of his live shows, Rose being critical in Glenn's own career and life. Ten Years Gone is a compilation of new music composed by various musicians who were either friends and contemporaries of Jack's or emerging artists influenced by him. This hugely varied and fascinating set was compiled and produced by Buck Curran of Arborea, whose own piece is a beauty. 'Greenfields of America' is a lovely slowed-down slide piece, forgoing the heavy thumbed bass technique Jack often used and instead using space and the ethereal qualities of the slide across the strings to work his magic. Also unexpected are the two bowed tunes on here; Mike Gangloff's patient, spooky opener has slow, droning sweeps, jumping from high to low strings resulting in a splendid, uneasy piece. Helena Espvall is known for her free improvising music and her cello tune 'Alcantara' plays very much to her strengths; like Gangloff's, this is at times anxious music, particularly with the notes being so much lower than the fiddle, and the drama is upped toward the halfway point, bringing a thrilling, nervous element to the mix. Wherever You Go, There You Are (3:50) Haint Blue are a popular seven-piece folk pop/rock outfit from Baltimore, Maryland with a loyal fan base and a four track eponymously titled EP under their belts released back in 2015. Judging from posted videos their live shows are uplifting and energetic featuring strong lead male vocals, layered harmonies, duelling fiddles, banjos and mandolin and whoops and hollering a plenty. Their debut album 'Overgrown' is due out February 15th according to the promo pack and features eleven tracks all of which demonstrate solid confident songwriting, strong musical performances and creative arrangements staying well within the bounds of their chosen genre and yet still sounding fresh and very entertaining. For the most part the lyrical themes concern songwriter and frontman Mike Cohn's ten year struggle with faith, family and serious addiction. He expresses his introspections thoughtfully and poetically and, maybe surprisingly given the tone of the subject matter, with a great ear for a really good hook line. So don't be fooled, while the lyrics and song titles certainly suggest trial and tribulation - and for sure growing up can be a bummer - to my ear there's a joyous life affirming energy that runs through this album as a whole. You get the feeling you're listening to a company of friends who really love what they're doing and want to share that joy with you. What better way for the young artist to escape the clawing strictures of religious fundamentalism in America today. The opening track is titled 'Another Year'. We start with a dissonant tremolo string pad and slow simple left hand piano chord pattern with church choir like harmonies over a loose brushes on snare backbeat all to good effect. Cohn's vocal is measured and deliberate as the strings rise and fall over lines such as "running from what I am", and words about regret and change. There's a brief interlude where the fiddle picks up the vocal top line which gives way in verse two to a beautifully recorded rich big body acoustic guitar that moves the song forward very nicely. The song builds to a crescendo lamenting the finding of love in all the wrong places and tracks, almost without pause, into 'Sins Laid Bare'. Here we have a more traditional folk arrangement with prominent fiddles and mandolins following the intricately worked out melodies. The arrangement climaxes and drops relentlessly until a final understated epiphany. There is a beautifully controlled energy in this recording. 'Won't Come Back' gives drummer Alex White plenty to do with a sharp incisive drum pattern in the foreground. Each song arrangement has elements not heard in other songs on the album which helps maintain interest to the final track. The album finale is a raw track called 'Where You Go, There You Are' which has a hint of a Springsteen quality to the vocals and of the 'Devil Goes Down to Georgia' to the fiddling. You just know these songs are going to be huge crowd pleasers and we can only hope some UK dates are in the pipeline.
