Mais lorsqu'il est question de se limiter au moins de 50 ans, le casting a tendance à se réduire. Un nom revient pourtant sans cesse. Comme un musicien au-dessus de la mêlée. Celui de Brad Mehldau. Car même sans qu'il soit question d'une quelconque et stupide compétition, le pianiste américain est l'un des meilleurs de sa génération. Fascinant surtout. Comme l'est cette publication : un quadruple album réunissant 32 pièces enregistrées en solo et en live. Mehldau a pioché dans les bandes de 19 de ses concerts européens donnés durant la décennie passée et a divisé en quatre chapitres les titres sélectionnés : Dark/Light, The Concert, Intermezzo/Rückblick et E Minor/E Major. Comme il l'explique lui-même dans les notes de pochette, « s'il s'agit d'environ 300 minutes de musique, l'ordre des morceaux n'est pas arbitraire. J'ai essayé de raconter une histoire du début à la fin dans la manière dont j'ai séquencé le disque. Et il y a un thème et un personnage pour chacun des quatre chapitres. » Ce projet est d'autant plus intéressant qu'au disque, Brad Mehldau a essentiellement enregistré en trio ou dans d'autres configurations, à l'exception d'Elegiac Cycle en 1999, d'un Live In Tokyo en 2004 et d'un Live In Marciac en 2006, ses trois seules publications en solo à ce jour. Sans surprise, la densité de la musique proposée avec ces 10 Years Solo Live exige de l'auditeur une attention soutenue. Mais le jeu en vaut la chandelle car le périple conçu ici par Mehldau est simplement époustouflant. La façon dont le pianiste digère la musique populaire des Beatles, Nirvana, Massive Attack, Radiohead ou Jeff Buckley, puis, plus loin, celle de Brahms par exemple, ou, plus loin encore, d'un Bill Evans, d'un John Coltrane ou d'un Keith Jarrett (sans oublier Léo Ferré !) est assez ahurissante. Ahurissante comme sa façon de balayer d'un revers de main une quelconque volonté d'impressionner la galerie. Autant de personnages croisés, autant de saynètes présentées et autant de décors plantés dans cet océan d'improvisation font de ce quadruple opus un pur chef d'œuvre. Le fait d'avoir sélectionné des titres live a également son importance. Brad Mehldau, toujours dans les notes de pochette, l'explique très bien : « Tout ce business des concerts, c'est assez étrange. C'est une directe et intense forme d'empathie avec un groupe d'inconnus qui dure environ 901 minutes. Et puis, c'est fini, chacun rentre à la maison. Je remonte dans ma chambre d'hôtel et je vais me coucher. Quelque chose s'est passé, mais ce qui était le plus vital ne peut être transposé avec des mots. C'est doux, un peu aigre-doux. Dans tous les cas, ça n'est pas suffisant de dire que les publics différents ont été importants pour la création de cette musique. Ils ont été absolument nécessaires, c'était la charnière. Wegmuller's album followed in the footsteps of Timothy Leary's Seven Up, Ash Ra Tempel, and Sergius Golowin's Lord Krishna von Goloka, backed by Wallenstein, the duo Westripp-Witthuser, and keyboardist Klaus Schulze. Tarot, with almost all these musicians on the roster, is the culmination, a bizarre roller coaster ride through sonic soundscapes, while Wegmuller intones in his deep voice, sometimes augmented by more effects, though he often remains silent for long instrumental stretches. From the opening track, a funky number with blazing guitar and rolling piano over which a circus-barker voice announces the band with grand élan, to the side four track's nonstop blast into hallucinogenic after-burn, this one is a monster all the way. Shimmering Ash Ra Tempel guitar freakouts blend with Wallenstein's more rollicking psych rock, Schulze's deep space keyboards, and Westripp's cosmic folk to create strange blitzes of electronic weirdness. Oneohtrix Point Never - Chrome Country AllMusic Review by Heather Phares Over the course of Oneohtrix Point Never's discography, Daniel Lopatin managed to sound markedly different from album to album while keeping an overarching aesthetic. His Warp debut, R Plus Seven, often feels like a microcosm of that approach; these shape-shifting songs hold together more because of Lopatin's bold sonic palette than any unifying concept. Aside from the opening track, "Boring Angel," he downplays the drones that made up the heart of his earlier work (and Replica, to a lesser extent) in favor of bright, briskly applied tones that, on the surface, seem like the opposite of his usual modus operandi. This fragmentation could be seen as a variation of Replica's choppy recontextualizing, though the results are dizzying rather than hypnotic: "Americans" hops from environmental sounds to zapping synths to cheery strings to choral vocals in what feels like the musical equivalent of a series of smash cuts. Similarly, Lopatin trades one kind of nostalgia for another: instead of evoking (and sampling from) the '70s and early '80s as his earlier work did, the brittle, sometimes cheap MIDI-esque sounds he sprinkles throughout R Plus Seven recall the late '80s and early '90s. The preponderance of choral pads on tracks such as the fittingly named "Still Life" give the album an eerie, uncanny valley-ish undercurrent, while "Along"'s mix of piping synth flutes, exotic percussion, and sax sounds like new age and smooth jazz run through a woodchipper. However, thanks to the light-handed arrangements, what could be cheesy or ironic more often than not feels forward-looking. Despite the dots and dashes of sound at any given moment, the album gives an overall impression of sleekness, and its subversive glossiness suggests that its tracks were made from pop songs that were shattered into shards that are as alluring as they are difficult to piece together. Occasionally, Lopatin tones down the hyperactivity a bit, resulting in highlights like "Problem Areas," which is carried by rubbery bass and a stairstepping brass motif, and "Zebra" and "Chrome Country," which both use warm-sounding synths to surprisingly emotional effect (even if the latter song tweaks the choral pad so violently that it sounds like it's shrieking). By conventional standards, R Plus Seven isn't a widely appealing crossover for Lopatin's new label. Yet in an almost perverse way, the playful spirit of these tracks and their lively sounds make for some of his most accessible work yet. For the most part, the album showcases Oneohtrix Point Never's restlessness and ambition in flattering ways; if it's equal parts mystifying and beautiful, it's also a puzzle well worth trying to figure out.
