  1. Artist: Soulard Blues Band Title: Live At The Great Grizzly Bear Year Of Release: 1998 Label: King Solomon Records Genre: St. Louis Blues, Blues Jazz Quality: FLAC (tracks) | MP3 320 kbps Total Time: 48:44 Total Size: 340 MB | 114 MB Tracklist: 1. Long Way From St. Louie (2:57) 9. Same Old Blues (5:38) 10. King Bee (6:01) What's just as impressive as the eight straight wins is the fact that the Soulard Blues Band has been together for almost a quarter-century. Formed in 1978 by Art Dwyer who was soon joined by Jim "Ribtips" McClaren, SBB evolved naturally from late-night/early-morning jam sessions that mixed these young musicians with veteran talents such as Henry Townsend, Doc Terry, Tommy Bankhead and harmonica player Big Al. That connection to the essence of the St. Louis Blues tradition has been a vital element in SBB's longevity. Despite a number of personnel changes along the way (at one point, the group even expanded to include a horn section and backing vocalists), SBB has remained true to its roots. Blues may be in its name, but the Soulard Blues Band brings a distinctive touch to just about any musical style around. As Duke Ellington used to say, there are really only two kinds of music - good and bad. Evidently, SBB has found the secret to producing the good kind - year after year after year. ~Terry Perkins Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]
  2. Artist: Davy Mooney & The Hope of Home Band Title: Live at National Sawdust Year Of Release: 2020 Label: Sunnyside Records Genre: Jazz Quality: Mp3 320 kbps / FLAC (tracks) / 24bit-96kHz FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 67:19 Total Size: 156 / 370 MB / 1.29 GB Tracklist: 01. Prospectin' - Live (11:07) 08. Angela's Sad Song - Live (6:45) 09. Swingset - Live (8:58) It is easy to take live performances for granted. Easy to overlook the magic that happens when artists come together to express themselves and reach appreciative listeners. There is a certain energy that is only felt in the moment of musical creation, a give and take between musicians and the audience. That communal spirit should not be overlooked, especially, now in these times of quarantine and separation. Guitarist/composer Davy Mooney knows just how special these experiences are and wanted to capture the essence of their magic on his new recording, Live at National Sawdust. On the recording, Mooney brings together his incredible Hope of Home band, featuring saxophonist John Ellis, pianist Jon Cowherd, bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Brian Blade, to play old and new material for a receptive group of listeners at Brooklyn's National Sawdust and to conjure a fabulously warm and heartfelt performance that can be revisited over and over. Originally from New Orleans, Mooney lived in, and performed regularly around, New York City for years. Over the past three years, he has been living and teaching in Denton, Texas at the University of North Texas. The change has allowed Mooney the opportunity to focus on more contemporary music as he mentors the next generation of up-and-coming jazz players. The effect of this can be heard in Mooney's own playing and composing, as he continues to evolve. New York City remains a touchstone for Mooney and his regular visits to the City provide ample opportunities to remain a part of the contemporary scene. There is a certain edge and talent level in New York that Mooney wants to remain engaged with, the Hope of Home Band being a testament to that, as most of the members live in the City. Mooney originally met Cowherd and Blade at the Monk Institute in 2008 and performed with Blades' Fellowship Band in 2009. The continued involvement of these two plus stalwarts Ellis and Clohsey as members of his band for nearly a decade continues to humble the guitarist. Typically, he finds a way to present his star studded band on these visits and his recent January 2020 trip once again provided this opportunity. But on this trip, Mooney wanted to try something a bit different. He decided to attempt a live recording of the Hope of Home Band. Of course, the first consideration for finding a venue is to find a good piano. Cowherd was quick to suggest National Sawdust, as they not only have a great piano but a state of the art recording setup. Mooney and the Hope of Home Band assembled at National Sawdust on January 27, 2020 with engineer Sascha von Oertzen. Of course, live recordings have their challenges. The performers have to consider the audience and can not just start over again. But that is precisely why live recordings can be amazing. The emphasis on being in the moment supercedes the idea of perfection, typically producing compelling performances. The pieces that Mooney brought to record were a mixture of staple pieces from his repertoire going back for nearly 15 years and new pieces that were written with the promise of this recording. Some of the older pieces are rarities that the guitarist brought out from his first recordings from 2009, Astoriano and Last Train Home, a duo album with John Pizzarelli. The program begins with a sort of suite written for the members of his family. The bouncy "Kid Flash" is a new piece inspired by Mooney's son Andrés's love of action hero cartoons, the piece being a new arrangement of a composition the guitarist wrote for UNT's guitar ensemble. "Milly's Song" uses a singsong cadence that Mooney's youngest son, Milton, frequently sings, arranged into a gorgeously subtle composition. The floating "St. Paul's" is named for Mooney's wife Angela's native São Paulo, Brazil and is a whimsical piece with cascading guitar and saxophone. The haunting "Zona Leste" takes its name from a favorite neighborhood in São Paulo and is an adaptation of a Chinese melody, "Jasmine Flower." The subtly swinging "Wrinkles" comes from Astoriano and is adapted well for this highly communicative band. From the same recording, the winsome "Moon Song" is a lovely feature for Mooney's guitar and voice, while "Prospectin'" gets a fantastic new treatment from the Band. "Angela's Sad Song" is a gorgeous ballad written for Mooney's wife that showcases Clohesy's stunning bass work and Ellis's warm bass clarinet. The recording concludes with a bright and uncontrived take of "Swingset." The communal aspect of music making is missing in the world right now. Guitarist Davy Mooney feels it dearly and hopes to provide some of that much-needed energy to the public with his Hope of Home Band and their heartwarming new recording, Live at National Sawdust. Baiao de quatro Alba Armengou, Carla Motis and Èlia Bastida have grown up jazzy in the context of my project Sant Andreu Jazz Band. The idea of uniting them on the same stage in this small format came from seeing that the combination of their voices, instruments and musical tastes could give a good result. To have the great tenor sax Scott Hamilton in this recording is, once again, a dream for us. And it is not by chance that he is part of the last cd's that I have recorded with the three of them, as part of the collection "Joan Chamorro presenta" and the last album with Èlia, "The magic sound of the violin". Listening to this cd brings us back to what the concert was like, in the framework of the Barcelona Jazz Festival, on November 27th 2019. A concert where we can see the magic of jazz in the 16 songs that were part of the set list of the session. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

  7. Artist: Joana Queiroz Title: Tempo Sem Tempo Year Of Release: 2020 Label: YB Music Genre: Instrumental, Brazilian Music, Jazz Quality: FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 40:59 Total Size: 178 MB Clarinettist and saxophonist Joana Queiroz's intricate Tempo Sem Tempo (Time Without Time) borrows its name and title-track from a song by celebrated composer, essayist and Brazilian literature professor, José Miguel Wisnik. Wisnik's lyrics tug at the construct of time: "Time goes around and around, Time has absurd revolutions, He is and is not at the same time". For Queiroz, attending a Wisnik concert in Rio, the penny dropped: she started to weep and Wisnik's "Tempo Sem Tempo" began looping in her brain. Time without time - both the song and notion - was the springboard for Queiroz's album. Queiroz arranged each of her original compositions so that she could play them herself, utilising loop pedals to build rich, elaborate textures. She then elected four vocal pieces - "Seu Olhar" (Gilberto Gil), "Jóia" (Caetano Veloso), "Tempo Sem Tempo" (Wisnik/Jorge Mautner) and "Dois Litorais" (Mariá Portugal) - which she manipulated into looped, circular forms. Looping is at the heart of this record, both in practice and theory. On Tempo Sem Tempo, each woodwind loop challenges the idea of time and live-ness. Each of Queiroz's compositions sound organic and of-the-moment. But they are made up of loops that are inherently no longer live the minute they're made: each instrument, to paraphrase Wisnik, both "is and is not at the same time". The product is an enthralling collection of intimate, delicate compositions. On opener, "O Barco", it is a full two minutes before you hear a proper note of music - what precedes is intricate ASMR-inducing breath- and valve-work which ripples down the spine. "O Barco" builds slowly with breathy drones and scalic patterns, looping and spiralling timelessly, unbound by any exact metre. "Memórias", Queiroz notes, is like a ticking clock - but the time is never exact; always lilting and organic rather than measured. The album builds and swells towards its epicentre: Queiroz's breath-taking interpretation of Caetano Veloso's "Jóia", the melody of which is meticulously threaded through its preceding composition, "Beira Do Rio, Beira De Mar". It's on "Jóia" that the complexity of the album's arrangements is fully appreciated. With incredible close-harmony vocals, rumbling drum-work (courtesy of her Quartabê bandmate, Mariá Portugal) and intriguing production, everything falls into place. Tempo Sem Tempo is indeed without time: it isn't interested in linearity; rather it is a record that is light and spacious and moves delicately from one idea to the next. Tracklist: 01. What power art thou 05:06 10. Power (postlude) 01:18 11. Tomorrow Today 05:06 No one quite knows why Alex Sadnik started playing the saxophone. A family friend believes it might have been his exposure to the Sesame Street's "Put Down the Duckie". Perhaps it was a particularly pleasing finish he saw on his first saxophone that fateful day in 5th grade when he first picked it up. But what cannot be disputed is his dedication to the craft of music and education. Alex attended the music program at California State University, Long Beach where he completed a bachelors of music with an emphasis in music composition in 2007. He spent his undergraduate time immersed in saxophone performance, jazz studies, music theory and the practical application of a music education. He has been active in music education for a decade, maintaining a private studio of young woodwind students and coaching throughout Southern California. He previously served as woodwind instructor for schools in the Irvine and Long Beach Unified School Districts and now works for Mesa Verde Middle School in Moorpark, CA and Calabasas High School in Calabasas, CA. Alex's regular musical experiences include playing for Jazzy Ash and the Leaping Lizards, the Teryn Re Big Band, as well as leading his own ensemble. He has toured extensively with Jazzy Ash, with highlights including two residences at Lincoln Center in New York and performances at The Getty Museum, Lollapalooza, Lied Center at KU, Broad Stage, Miami Theater Center, Capitol Theatre, and many more. The mission of his ensemble is to present inspired arrangements of his favorite songs alongside original compositions. His diversity of experience creates a unique juxtaposition of jazz, rock, folk and improvised expression. In December of 2016, Alex began working with producer Chris Schlarb at BIG EGO Studios as session musician and horn arranger. This collaboration has resulted in appearances on Jazzy Ash's Swing Set, Anthony Shadduck's Quartet and Double Quartet, GUMA, and albums from Psychic Temple, Eamon Fogarty, Dana T, R. Scott, and Ry Welch. In 2019, he was hired by BIG EGO to write horn arrangements for American Idol finalist Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon's upcoming LP release, Namesake. His catalog as a leader includes the EP album Londelius, featuring Jeff Parker on guitar, Carey Frank on organ and Wurlitzer, Anna Butterss on bass, and Tina Raymond on drums. This EP session also produced two music videos featuring arrangements of Charlie Parker's Marmaduke and Votre Toast from the opera Carmen. 2020 will see the release of a LP featuring Jeff Parker, Carey Frank, and Stephen Hodges, as well as a Christmas single with BIG EGO session regulars. All of his music is available for streaming or purchase on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and Bandcamp. He became a professional in 1947 and had stints with Georgie Auld, Lionel Hampton, Charlie Parker (on an occasional basis during 1953-1955), Art Blakey (1954), and Don Redman. Gordon was with Dizzy Gillespie's 1956 big band, touring the Mideast, and getting a solo on "Night in Tunisia." He was in the Horace Silver quintet, moved back to Boston for a period, and then relocated to Los Angeles where he worked and recorded with Barney Kessel, Benny Carter, Harold Land, Shelly Manne, Dexter Gordon, and Shelly Manne (1958-1960). Joe Gordon, who led dates for EmArcy (1955) and Contemporary (1961), was on one Thelonious Monk recording and spent his last few years as a freelance musician. ~ Scott Yanow Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

The set (which has three originals by Vinnegar, Edwards' "Wheelin' and Dealin'," Don Nelson, Les McCann and Freddie Hubbard in addition to the one standard "I'll String Along with You") helps define the modern mainstream of the early '60s, when cool jazz was being replaced by hard bop.~ Scott Yanow Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Bobby Lyle - The Genie (1977)

Artist: Bobby Lyle Title: The Genie Year Of Release: 1977 Label: Soul Brother Records Genre: Jazz, Fusion Quality: FLAC (tracks+.cue+.log) Total Time: 41:43 Total Size: 254 MB AMG Review by Alex Henderson: Over the years, Bobby Lyle's work has been erratic. The pianist/keyboardist has recorded his share of gems, but he has come out with some disappointing, very uneven albums as well. One of Lyle's stronger releases was Genie, his debut LP from 1977. Produced by Wayne Henderson, this is primarily a fusion/crossover jazz effort. A young Lyle shows considerable promise on electric gems that include the imaginative title track, the congenial "Pisces," the North African-influenced "Mother Nile," and the haunting "Night Breeze" (which was also recorded by Ronnie Laws in the 1970s). Not everything on Genie is fusion or crossover jazz. "You Think of Her" and "Magic Ride" are vocal funk/soul items that find Lyle singing lead; he isn't mind-blowing as a singer, but he's decent. And Lyle detours into straight-ahead jazz with an unaccompanied solo piano performance of the standard "I Didn't Know What Time It Was." Nonetheless, R&B vocals and acoustic jazz aren't the things that Genie is best known for -- instrumental fusion and crossover jazz are what caused this LP to go down in history as an electric jazz favorite. Genie falls short of perfect -- the record would have been even stronger if Lyle had stuck to instrumental music, which is his specialty. But much of the album is excellent, and Genie frequently reminds us how much promise Lyle showed in the beginning. Tracklist: 01. Bobby Lyle - The Genie (5:56) 02. Bobby Lyle - Magic Ride (5:35) 03. Session ace Lee Ritenour once more employs the cream of L.A.'s studio crop to come up with a drab, utterly unimaginative slab of nondescript pop. With guest vocalists like Eric Tagg and Bill Champlin (who also contribute as composers), Ritenour and his cohorts -- among them Jeff Porcaro, Harvey Mason, David Foster, Alex Acuña, and Richard Tee -- craft a pristine sonic foray into early-'80s production styles without a memorable song in ten. This is especially exasperating considering that Ritenour had the audacity to cover Sly Stone's "(You Caught Me) Smilin'" and murder it. Simply lifeless and dreadful. © Thom Jurek /TiVo Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Highlights from the compilation's 15 tracks include classics from stalwarts like Serge Gainsbourg, Brigitte Bardot, and Alice Dona, as well as Jacqueline Taïeb's mod-tinged 7" "Heures du Matin" and Jacques Dutronc's deadpan proto-garage hit "Et Moi, Et Moi, Et Moi." Getting by on a technicality is British pop star Sandie Shaw, contributing her French-spoken rendition of Bacharach's "There's Always Something There to Remind Me," known here as "Toujours un Coin Qui Me Rappelle."
