Most of the songs were later re-recorded by Chris Thomas and bill price for Virgin Records in February-August 1977 and released on "Never Mind The Bollocks". Only a cover version of the Stooges ' "No Fun", recorded in October 1976, was released on the single "Pretty Vacant" (1977). All recordings are made with the participation of the first bass guitarist Glen Matlock. Released a week before " Never Mind The Bollocks "(1977), the bootleg claimed to be an" alternative " version of how the album should have sounded. It is not known who was behind the publication of the bootleg. The rights to the songs were owned by McLaren's firm, the tapes themselves were in the possession of Dave Goodman. Both of them have always denied any involvement in the fact that the bootleg appeared in stores at the same time as "Never Mind The Bollocks", although McLaren openly stated that he did not like the official album. In the following years, the bootleg was repeatedly published under different names ("Mini Album", " No Future UK?", "There Is No Future") and with different content (common were the July 1976 demos). In 1996, "Spunk "was officially released for the first time as an additional disc to the reissue of the album"Never Mind The Bollocks". Finally, in 2006, "Spunk" was officially released as a separate edition on Castle/Sanctuary Records. In addition, recordings with "Spunk" are often found in various pirated Sex Pistols compilations. The album features new studio collaborations of Ray Davies' compositions, which were originally recorded by his band The Kinks. The album was recorded in Oslo, New York, New Jersey, Chicago and London. Davies stated: "This project came about almost by accident, with some tracks I had to appreciate the style of the other artists, otherwise it would have sounded unbalanced. And I wanted the album to work as an entire listening experience but each track had a life of its own". The album featured the last studio recording by Alex Chilton. See My Friends was released seven months after his death. He previously covered "Till The End of The Day" on Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers. See My Friends reached number 12 in the UK Albums Chart. A tribute album starring the man of honor himself, who also curated the whole affair, See My Friends is a bit of a curious creature. Certainly, Ray Davies' influence is so pervasive he could rope in a number of heavy hitters from a number of different generations. Jackson Browne and Bruce Springsteen sign up for duets; Metallica backs the legend on a rip through "You Really Got Me," while Spoon offers suitably spacy support on "See My Friends"; Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora harmonize on a languid "Celluloid Heroes," and Black Francis comes in to sing "This Is Where I Belong," a song he covered with gusto some 16 years earlier. As it turns out, "This Is Where I Belong" provides a good indication of the energy level of See My Friends in general: the older dudes are comfortable playing with Ray while the newer dudes are respectful, delivering amiably mannered performances. As he later emphasised, his modernization "did not change a single one of Mozart's notes", but constituted "a way of showing admiration for an old master." Grieg also intended the pieces for a duo of student at teacher; here the performers are a pianist of exceptional distinction and her legendary mentor: Elisabeth Leonskaja and Sviatoslav Richter. Now this really is something to tickle the fancy of transcription-fanciers. When Grieg added an accompaniment for a second piano to Mozart's keyboard sonatas, he did it primarily with teaching in mind. It was apparently common practice in the 1880s for teachers to accompany their pupils on a second piano (my own teacher was still perpetuating the custom 80 years on). But the resulting compositions soon found their way into the concert-hall where, according to Grieg, "the whole thing sounded surprisingly good". And so it does today. In trying to "impart to several of Mozart's sonatas a tonal effect appealing to our modern ears" Grieg left a telling little document or two on just what those late nineteenth-century Norwegian ears expected. If the C major 'Sonata facile' seems to sit even more sedately in the drawing-room, then it soon becomes clear that the light glinting through its windows is not a million miles away from that bouncing off the fjord waters which lap around Troldhaugen. The C minor Fantasia becomes a dark salon melodrama (shades of Bergljot) which moves from conversation with not a little chromatic prevarication to the hanging of whimsical icicles of figuration around the major-key section. Gently exuberant harmonies cross-weave their way through the sparse trio-sonata-like textures of the opening F major before a trotting bass makes a high-stepping mountain horse of the rondo-finale. These are Mozart-Kugeln with a bonne bouche or two of the finest Gravadlax on the side. And if these fond tributes are good enough for Elisabeth Leonskaja and Sviatoslav Richter, who could resist tasting them?
