Van Morrison - Wobble And Ball The Bang Sessions, as most fans of Van the Man know, present Morrison when he is very good and when he is absolutely wretched. The good, of course, is his first solo album, Blowin' Your Mind, an engaging set of ambitious folk-rock which borrows equally from R&B and jazz, winding up with songs as ebullient as "Brown Eyed Girl" and as haunting as "T.B. Sheets," with a lot of ground covered in between. The bad is the songs that he wrote and recorded in a bid to get out of his contract with Bang obstinate, stream-of-conscious ditties and nonsense that he wrote on the spot; it's interesting in theory, but nearly unlistenable in practise. By bringing together both in one collection, appropriately entitled The Complete Bang Sessions, Purple Pyramid has given collectors an easy way to get it all at once. And this is for collectors it might not be deluxe packaging, but it's a well-packaged digipack with good sound, and only collectors will want all of this in their collection. Other fans of Van will be better-served by either his debut or the Epic/Legacy Bang Sessions CD, since it contains the cream of the crop, leaving the 30 "demos" behind, since they are the ephemera Morrison intended them to be. They are noted for their combination of brass and rock band instrumentation. They also incorporated music from Thelonious Monk and Sergei Prokofiev into their arrangements. They were originally formed in 1967 in New York City. Formed in Mönchengladbach by classically trained art student Jürgen Dollase in autumn 1971 as Blitzkrieg, with an international cast of: American Bill Barone, Dutchman Jerry Berkers, and local friend Harald Grosskopf. After only a couple of concerts, they were quickly spotted and eagerly signed up by Pilz. But, there proved to be a problem, also touring Germany at the time was a British band called Blitzkrieg, so a change of name was needed. They decided on Wallenstein, a notorious character of the Thirty Years War. Wallenstein's debut LP was classical rock with the accent on power, totally befitting the title Blitzkrieg. Further records saw a shift in focus, folkier and more diverse on Mother Universe, which was more Jerry Berkers show (after which he left and went solo), and then the definitive "Symphonic Rock Orchestra Wallenstein" sound of their Kosmische Musik LP's. After Jürgen and Harald collaborated with Ash Ra Tempel members on the Cosmic Jokers' albums, Harald departed and there was then a gradual all-change except for Jürgen, reincarnated with the not bad No More Love before moving into pop music. As he later emphasised, his modernization "did not change a single one of Mozart's notes", but constituted "a way of showing admiration for an old master." Grieg also intended the pieces for a duo of student at teacher; here the performers are a pianist of exceptional distinction and her legendary mentor: Elisabeth Leonskaja and Sviatoslav Richter. Now this really is something to tickle the fancy of transcription-fanciers. When Grieg added an accompaniment for a second piano to Mozart's keyboard sonatas, he did it primarily with teaching in mind. It was apparently common practice in the 1880s for teachers to accompany their pupils on a second piano (my own teacher was still perpetuating the custom 80 years on). But the resulting compositions soon found their way into the concert-hall where, according to Grieg, "the whole thing sounded surprisingly good". And so it does today. In trying to "impart to several of Mozart's sonatas a tonal effect appealing to our modern ears" Grieg left a telling little document or two on just what those late nineteenth-century Norwegian ears expected. If the C major 'Sonata facile' seems to sit even more sedately in the drawing-room, then it soon becomes clear that the light glinting through its windows is not a million miles away from that bouncing off the fjord waters which lap around Troldhaugen. The C minor Fantasia becomes a dark salon melodrama (shades of Bergljot) which moves from conversation with not a little chromatic prevarication to the hanging of whimsical icicles of figuration around the major-key section. Gently exuberant harmonies cross-weave their way through the sparse trio-sonata-like textures of the opening F major before a trotting bass makes a high-stepping mountain horse of the rondo-finale. These are Mozart-Kugeln with a bonne bouche or two of the finest Gravadlax on the side. And if these fond tributes are good enough for Elisabeth Leonskaja and Sviatoslav Richter, who could resist tasting them? The band formed in 1969, but would not release an album ("A Dream Within a Dream") under their own name until shortly before their demise in 1983. The band did record a full-length studio album in 1975 (with the help of SCORPIONS producer Dieter Dierks), but when it was finally released in the U.S. in 1978, progressive music was already in decline and their label issued the album ("Nature's Clear Well") under the band name GALAXY. WANIYETULA followed up "Nature's Clear Well" with another trip to the studio to compile a thematic project based on the literary works of Edgar Allen Poe. Once again, the band fell victim to poor timing as the ALAN PARSONS PROJECT released "Mysteries & Imagination." to great acclaim first, and the project would flounder for several years before being realized as the watered-down work "A Dream Within a Dream". Garden of Delights Records would reissue the album in the nineties, and included three tracks from a discontinued and rare live compilation ("Concert '71"), which included the band's cover version of the DOORS standard "Light My Fire". The band's sound has been compared to other eighties commercially-progressive bands such as SAGA and UK, but their compositions have a decidedly late seventies feel to them, particularly in the dissonant vocals and understated digital keyboards. It was years before he found a "real" guitar and taught himself to play in secret. His immediately became a star amongst the village youth. In a surprising turn, his songs began to win over local religious leaders with their lyrics of respect, honor, and tradition. In 2008, Mdou traveled to Nigeria to record his debut album of spacey autotune, drum machine, and synthesizer. The album became a viral hit on the mp3 networks of West Africa, and was later released on the compilation "Music from Saharan Cellphones." In 2013, he released "Afelan," compiled from field recordings of his performances recorded in his village. Then he shifted gears, producing and starring the first Tuareg language film, a remake of Prince's Purple Rain ("Rain the Color Blue with a Little Red in it"). Finally, in 2017, he created a solo folk album, "Sousoume Tamachek," a mellow blissed out recording evoking the calm desert soundscape. Without a band present, he played every instrument on the record. "I am a very curious person and I want to push Tuareg music far," he says. His new album, "Ilana" is his most ambitious to date - taking the tradition into hyperdrive, pushing Tuareg guitar into an ever louder and blistering direction. In contrast to the polished style of the typical "world music" fare, Mdou trades in unrelenting grit and has no qualms about going full shred. From the spaghetti western licks of "Tarhatazed," the raw wedding burner "Ilana," to the atmospheric Julie Cruise-ish ballad "Tumastin," Mdou's new album seems at home amongst some of the great seminal Western records. But Mdou disagrees with the classification. Mdou grew up listening to the Tuareg guitar greats, and it was only in the past few years on tour that he was introduced to the genre. "I don't know what rock is exactly, I have no idea," he says, I only know how to play in my style." As Mdou travels the world, he divides his time between two places, alternating from lavish weddings in Agadez to sold out concerts in Berlin nightclubs. It offers a unique perspective, but also means that he needs to address different audiences. At home, his compositions send a message to his people. Abroad, his music is an opportunity to be heard and represent his people on a world stage. His music has been featured in the BBC, The Guardian, Pitchfork, New Yorker, New York Times, L.A.
