It was released in the late summer of 1993, more than nine years after its predecessor, Mother's Spiritual. It followed Nyro's 1989 live album Laura: Live at the Bottom Line, and the atmosphere here is similarly laidback and easygoing. It was the last album of new original material that Nyro released during her lifetime, although she began recording another album in 1994, which was released in 2001 as Angel in the Dark. Walk the Dog and Light the Light received positive critical notices, and Nyro supported the album with a string of intimate dates with a harmony vocal group. Having to rebuild the group, they got transferred to Elton John's private label Rocket Records (still distributed by MCA) and in came Rod Bowkett (who will write most tunes on the new album) and Audience's Keith Gemmel, which will change the sound of the band since they now have two wind players. The ensuing album Extravaganza returns to the madness of their first two albums with the second side simply mind-blowing. The group will again disintegrate and will reform with original bassist Crun Walter back in the fold and Dave Lawson (ex-Web/Samurai and then-Greenslade) as a guest. Their album will a full-blown concept album describing Mr Mick's daily life and dreams. Stackridge has reformed and released a few live album around the turn of the century. Forget All About It [Todd Vocals] The Nazz was an American rock band formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, in 1967 by guitarist Todd Rundgren and bassist Carson Van Osten. Drummer Thom Mooney and vocalist/keyboardist Robert "Stewkey" Antoni joined before their first concert, opening for the Doors in 1967. They are best known for their debut single "Open My Eyes" backed with "Hello It's Me". Their name was derived from the Yardbirds' song "The Nazz Are Blue". Although the use of a definite article was intended, the band was credited simply as "Nazz" on their records and promotional materials. Between 1968 and 1970, Nazz released three albums (Nazz, Nazz Nazz, and Nazz III). Following the group's disbandment in 1969, Rundgren pursued a solo career, and in 1972, recorded a new version of "Hello It's Me" that reached number 5 on U.S. charts. Kids (3:21) 14. 32 Thousand Days (4:20) Sincerity in music generally cuts two ways; too much can sound schlocky and pompous, too little and the artist seems removed or disengaged. It's a tricky tightrope to traverse, one that Emerson Hart is only partially successful navigating. The Tonic frontman's third solo effort is sonically analogous to his first two. According to the publicity notes, it's a song cycle of sorts concerning Hart's grandfather, who lived for the titular 32,000 days. Without knowing that though, it's difficult to glean the concept from the lyrics of these songs, many dealing with universal concepts of broken relationships ("Lights Out"), getting older ("Ageless"), and endless love ("Island"). Musically they exhibit the professionalism you would expect from a veteran singer-songwriter with Hart's experience. These 14 mid-tempo folk-rockers are never less than emotional, honest and, well, sincere. Many like the opening "Lucky One" boast arena-sized, hook-laden choruses. They work off Hart's acoustic guitar which is overlaid with drums and electric riffs providing heft and an anthemic, melodic approach that's powerful and pulsating. But as much as many of these ballads reverberate effectively on their own, 50 minutes of them, most with comparable tempos, instrumentation and structure, dampens and dilutes the effect. Each starts with a strumming acoustic guitar and gradually builds from there. Add Emerson's sober but limited voice that drips with earnestness and by the time you get to the Tom Petty-styled closing title track, one of the disc's finest, the effect is numbing. A good, objective co-pilot could have worked wonders with these songs, but as artist and producer, Hart doesn't do himself any favors. All but one track is co-written. Some are shared by as many as three others along with Hart so it's hard to say who is to blame when the lyrics turn overly obvious as in "Disposable," where each line starts with a letter of the title ("D, is the distance, I for the insult, S for the sorry we never said" etc.) or "Amen"'s oblique "Let time erase what fear has become." Still, there are moments like on the ringing "She Makes it Rain" that show Emerson Hart to be a talented singer-songwriter who constructs solid melodies and choruses. But between the similar musical makeup of the songs and a sound that too often leans towards affected, he gets in his own way. It makes the well-crafted 32 Thousand Daysonly fitfully effective when, with perhaps a better producer to bring more diversity and crispness to the overall sound, it could have been much more successful. César Vidal may not have the purest of voices, but it has a fair amount of personality and is just the type of vocals that fit this type of sound. The small "but" of this review involves an occasional harmlessness, but it's almost relaxing not to have to pay wholehearted attention all the time. But in fact, subtlety can be compelling; it has worked wonders for artists ranging from Joni Mitchell to João Gilberto to Sade to the late Chet Baker. And subtlety certainly works well for Federico Aubele on Amatoria. This December 2008 recording never shouts to get one's attention; Aubele is a master of restraint and understatement, but that doesn't mean that the Argentinean singer/songwriter isn't highly expressive on breezy, gently introspective offerings such as "Siempre Nuevo" ("Always New"), "Tan Cerca" ("So Near"), "Luna y Sol" ("Moon and Sun") and "Este Amor" ("This Love"). A wide variety of influences assert themselves on this 40-minute CD, ranging from downtempo and trip-hop to reggae, boleros, flamenco, tango, and salsa. Aubele has cited the Beatles as an influence, and to be sure, the influence of Fab Four's softer side (as in "My Michelle," "Across the Universe," and "A Day in the Life") does assert itself on parts of Amatoria (the fact that this album was recorded 38 years after the Beatles' breakup is one of the many examples of how long-lasting their influence has been). But whatever influences might assert themselves on a particular track, Aubele's songs always sound very personal.
