We combined three songs from the Russian orchestra collection with the Paris Orchestra, as well as the famous recording of Rostropovich's "Sheherazade". Nelson was at Epic between 1977 and 1978, with only one album 1977's Intakes appearing at the time. Post-Intakes sessions first surfaced on the posthumous, somewhat overdubbed 1986 LP The Memphis Sessions, with further sides appearing on the 1993 collection Stay Young. The first time all the Epic sides were released was on Bear Family's exhaustive 2010 The Last Time Around, a seven-disc box so weighty it left an opening for a set like The Complete Epic Recordings, a set that focuses just on those two years at Epic. During this time, Nelson straddled two sounds the sunkissed West Coast country-rock he pioneered in the early '70s, and the super-smooth soft rock of the late '70s, occasionally dipping his toe into a bit of rockabilly revival. Epic may not have been entirely wrong to consider these sessions, including the scrapped Al Kooper-produced Back to Vienna LP, difficult to market: they sound of their time but they don't quite belong to their time, their sensibility a little bit too tied to country and rockabilly to make the recordings commercial, even if the layers of gloss render them radio-ready. Consequently, this music sounds better today than it may have at the time. Sure, it's very much a product of its time, with every bit of visible surface shining from studio slickness, but this period polish is appealing and, underneath it, Rick Nelson's remarkable interpretative gifts remain intact. Nelson never pushed a song too hard, not even when he rocked it hard as he did on insistent versions of John Fogerty's "Almost Saturday Night" and Buddy Holly's "Rave On," yet he was never lazy; his ease was his charm and he never lost sight of this gift, something that's evident on this collection of overlooked but very enjoyable latter-day recordings. Sean Booth and Rob Brown weren't quite there yet, but their self-production is even more accomplished than before, and their instincts to steer away from overly polite electronic dance music come ever more to the fore at various points throughout Amber. "Foil" begins the album with a distinctly spooky feel to it, with droning keyboards playing out over a series of spare percussion patterns; the heavy echo and crumbling, lo-fi bass feel of the track reduces its straightforward danceability, creating an ominous introduction to the album. "Silverside" at once strips things down to a more minimal approach. A string synth section plays out over first gently thudding then more pounding beats. Then a more off-kilter section with distorted vocal samples and sounds provides part of the melodic accompaniment and rhythm. "Glitch" has a nice roiling rumble to it; it isn't as fragmented as later releases, but veers a little more closely to the edge in comparison to earlier songs. "Piezo" is also worth noting, with uplifting synths balancing out a very quirky, almost intrusive series of rhythms, while "Yulquen" eschews beats entirely for a slightly disturbing though still beautiful track which rivals prime Aphex Twin. For all this, Amber does suffer a similarity to Incunabula, in that a couple of tracks could be removed with no problem, while tracks like "Montreal" and "Slip" continue the basic Incunabula formula without noticeable change. Even so, things are clearly starting to gel a little more here than on previous releases; the great leap forward becomes all the more logical in retrospect. The mid-tempo opener, "Runaway Soul," is a solid beginning with harmonica and Hammond organ. Her softer side is also shown in some delightful harmonies. "Woke Up This Mornin'" has a Sunday church feeling, slowly building into a funky Southern track with a choir-like harmony. "Smalltown Blues" takes more of an acoustic slant, featuring mainly Foster and acoustic guitar dominating the tune. Foster rarely takes a wrong turn on the album, knowing her strengths and playing to them. "Home" is a soulful tune that has a tremendous and effortless flow, despite the rather heavy spiritual theme. "Hole in My Pocket," however, treads on similar ground, resulting in the track being a bit more stagnant and difficult to appreciate. One trait that makes the album very cohesive is how organic each song sounds, not slick over-produced radio fodder. "Give You My Love" has somewhat of an Elton John vibe, whether it's the melody or the song's structure. "Ocean of Tears (Mama)" has subtle but distinctive Latin percussion and rhythm in the style of Santana's "Black Magic Woman." Foster tends to be a bit more theatrical here vocally, but not enough to ruin the effort. "Death Came A-Knockin' (Travelin' Shoes)," the track dedicated to her father, is perhaps the album's highlight. The mix of somber lyrics with a moody arrangement makes the best of an otherwise depressing topic. "Joy," which features Foster accompanied by Terri Hendrix, is an upbeat roots gospel rave-up that mixes the Austin sound with some Bible belt harmonies. Musically, besides the country track "Round & Round," the album features a mixture of mostly blues rock and boogie woogie induced rock in a generally carefree and upbeat sound. The album eventually sold two million copies. In 2005, the album was reissued on Super Audio CD by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab. The album was certified gold April 30, 1973 and multi-platinum on November 21, 1986. The single "Frankenstein" was certified gold June 19, 1973. While this album will forever be remembered for spawning the huge hit singles "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride," there's plenty more to appreciate on this stellar release. Kah-Ming Ng One of the best-kept secrets about Johann Pachelbel is his sacred music, both that he wrote it -- his omnipresent Canon in D and imposing output for the organ tends to obscure this point -- and that it is of such excellent quality as it is. Little of it has been recorded prior to British label Signum's Pachelbel: Vespers, featuring the commanding talents of the King's Singers and period instrument ensemble Charivari Agréable under the direction of Kah-Ming Ng, and the specific works on this disc have never been recorded by anyone. Most likely composed in Nuremberg for the church of St. Erfurt during Pachelbel's last years, the manuscripts containing Pachelbel's Vespers settings were deposited for safekeeping in the Bodleian Library at Oxford by one of Pachelbel's sons, Charles Theodore Pachelbel, shortly before his departure for the American colonies around 1733. These works have lain, practically untouched, until the advent of this recording. What a remarkable discovery they are! St. Erfurt was one among only a few Lutheran churches in Germany still utilizing the old Latin texts for Vespers services in the early 1700s, and Pachelbel was an expert hand in such settings; by the time Johann Sebastian Bach began writing mass movements in earnest in the 1730s the practice was altogether extinct. The Magnificat in C major heard here -- transposed down from E flat major -- contains one of the loveliest settings of the Gloria made by anyone, with the word "Gloria" sung out in lengthy, unbroken lines of melody containing hair-raising, wide-ranging leaps. Those looking for more of the attractive instrumental texture of Pachelbel's overly familiar Canon in D will find it in several spots among the instrumental parts in these pieces. Ng, the King's Singers, and Charivari Agréable are working all in concord here, serving as stars of the show but not getting in the way of each other, and the music unfolds with summit after summit of glorious, breathtaking music. This has certainly got to be one of the top classical discs of 2010, given the high level of performance and the rarity and significance of the repertoire. Anyone who is devoted to the Baroque really should not miss this, though one is tempted to say that this disc is good enough to please just about anybody. For the sake of variety, two instrumental sonatas by composers close to Pachelbel -- Johann Krieger and Johann Kaspar Kerll -- are included and played very well by Charivari Agréable. However, Pachelbel's vesper settings are of such quality that you might hardly notice the sonatas.
