Though Discovery charted well, it was becoming obvious that ELO were starting to run themselves out of useful Beatles hooks with which to fuel their hit-making machine. As he later emphasised, his modernization "did not change a single one of Mozart's notes", but constituted "a way of showing admiration for an old master." Grieg also intended the pieces for a duo of student at teacher; here the performers are a pianist of exceptional distinction and her legendary mentor: Elisabeth Leonskaja and Sviatoslav Richter. Now this really is something to tickle the fancy of transcription-fanciers. When Grieg added an accompaniment for a second piano to Mozart's keyboard sonatas, he did it primarily with teaching in mind. It was apparently common practice in the 1880s for teachers to accompany their pupils on a second piano (my own teacher was still perpetuating the custom 80 years on). But the resulting compositions soon found their way into the concert-hall where, according to Grieg, "the whole thing sounded surprisingly good". And so it does today. In trying to "impart to several of Mozart's sonatas a tonal effect appealing to our modern ears" Grieg left a telling little document or two on just what those late nineteenth-century Norwegian ears expected. If the C major 'Sonata facile' seems to sit even more sedately in the drawing-room, then it soon becomes clear that the light glinting through its windows is not a million miles away from that bouncing off the fjord waters which lap around Troldhaugen. The C minor Fantasia becomes a dark salon melodrama (shades of Bergljot) which moves from conversation with not a little chromatic prevarication to the hanging of whimsical icicles of figuration around the major-key section. Gently exuberant harmonies cross-weave their way through the sparse trio-sonata-like textures of the opening F major before a trotting bass makes a high-stepping mountain horse of the rondo-finale. These are Mozart-Kugeln with a bonne bouche or two of the finest Gravadlax on the side. The band formed in 1969, but would not release an album ("A Dream Within a Dream") under their own name until shortly before their demise in 1983. The band did record a full-length studio album in 1975 (with the help of SCORPIONS producer Dieter Dierks), but when it was finally released in the U.S. in 1978, progressive music was already in decline and their label issued the album ("Nature's Clear Well") under the band name GALAXY. WANIYETULA followed up "Nature's Clear Well" with another trip to the studio to compile a thematic project based on the literary works of Edgar Allen Poe. Once again, the band fell victim to poor timing as the ALAN PARSONS PROJECT released "Mysteries & Imagination." to great acclaim first, and the project would flounder for several years before being realized as the watered-down work "A Dream Within a Dream". Garden of Delights Records would reissue the album in the nineties, and included three tracks from a discontinued and rare live compilation ("Concert '71"), which included the band's cover version of the DOORS standard "Light My Fire". The band's sound has been compared to other eighties commercially-progressive bands such as SAGA and UK, but their compositions have a decidedly late seventies feel to them, particularly in the dissonant vocals and understated digital keyboards. Cale included a new version of "After Midnight" on the album, but the true meat of the record lay in songs like "Crazy Mama," which became a hit single, and "Call Me the Breeze," which Lynyrd Skynyrd later covered. On these songs and many others on Naturally, Cale effortlessly captured a lazy, rolling boogie that contradicted all the commercial styles of boogie, blues, and country-rock at the time. His unconventional interpretations of Tuareg guitar and have pushed him to the forefront of a crowded scene. Back home, he's celebrated for his original compositions and verbose poetry, an original creator in a genre defined by cover bands. In the exterior, where Saharan rock has become one of the continents biggest musical exports, he's earned a name for himself with his guitar moves. Mdou shreds with a relentless and frenetic energy that puts his contemporaries to shame. Mdou Moctar hails from a small village in central Niger in a remote region steeped in religious tradition. Growing up in an area where secular music was all but prohibited, he taught himself to play on a homemade guitar cobbled together out of wood. It was years before he found a "real" guitar and taught himself to play in secret. His immediately became a star amongst the village youth. In a surprising turn, his songs began to win over local religious leaders with their lyrics of respect, honor, and tradition. In 2008, Mdou traveled to Nigeria to record his debut album of spacey autotune, drum machine, and synthesizer. The album became a viral hit on the mp3 networks of West Africa, and was later released on the compilation "Music from Saharan Cellphones." In 2013, he released "Afelan," compiled from field recordings of his performances recorded in his village. Then he shifted gears, producing and starring the first Tuareg language film, a remake of Prince's Purple Rain ("Rain the Color Blue with a Little Red in it"). Finally, in 2017, he created a solo folk album, "Sousoume Tamachek," a mellow blissed out recording evoking the calm desert soundscape. Without a band present, he played every instrument on the record. "I am a very curious person and I want to push Tuareg music far," he says. His new album, "Ilana" is his most ambitious to date - taking the tradition into hyperdrive, pushing Tuareg guitar into an ever louder and blistering direction. In contrast to the polished style of the typical "world music" fare, Mdou trades in unrelenting grit and has no qualms about going full shred. From the spaghetti western licks of "Tarhatazed," the raw wedding burner "Ilana," to the atmospheric Julie Cruise-ish ballad "Tumastin," Mdou's new album seems at home amongst some of the great seminal Western records. But Mdou disagrees with the classification. Mdou grew up listening to the Tuareg guitar greats, and it was only in the past few years on tour that he was introduced to the genre. "I don't know what rock is exactly, I have no idea," he says, I only know how to play in my style." As Mdou travels the world, he divides his time between two places, alternating from lavish weddings in Agadez to sold out concerts in Berlin nightclubs. It offers a unique perspective, but also means that he needs to address different audiences. At home, his compositions send a message to his people. Abroad, his music is an opportunity to be heard and represent his people on a world stage. His music has been featured in the BBC, The Guardian, Pitchfork, New Yorker, New York Times, L.A.
