Reminiscent, in places, of a less-precious successor to Quintessence and the Incredible String Band in that moods and esotericism do sometimes get the better of the band's more conventional music impulses, Jade Warrior is nevertheless a remarkable album, all the more so since its makers could readily have given the likes of Jethro Tull and the Moody Blues some serious competition in the mellifluous prog stakes. Glyn Havard's vocals themselves can sound extraordinarily Ian Anderson-ish in places, with Field's wielding of the flute and some distinctly edgy tempos only furthering that impression. Elsewhere, however, the same tools combine to induce emotions that range from trance to terror, an accomplishment that means highlights of the album are difficult to single out. Since her 2001 self-titled debut, she has stayed true-blue to the genre, never veering into crossover territory. Partial credit goes to her beaut of an East Texas twang, which she doesn't try to flatten into something it's not. On her ninth studio album, Lambert plays around with rock 'n' roll and blues, but it's also so country. "I'm out in the Mojave, call me Ricky, call me Bobby," she dares on the muscular "Actin' Up," like a modern-day Jerry Reed. "Call me hotter than wasabi/ Cause I'm actin' up." Three of these songs were first heard on The Marfa Tapes, her acoustic, raw-to-the-bone 2021 collaboration with singer-songwriters Jon Randall and Jack Ingram. "In His Arms" gets a richer, rounder studio treatment, and "Waxahachie" is filled out with cool '80s guitar. "Geraldene" is even more of a hoot, alive with juke-joint fire and Keith Richards-style guitar. Outlaw fun in the tradition of Loretta Lynn's "You Ain't Woman Enough," it finds Lambert confidently stuttering the title as she delivers devastating couplets: "I could see you coming all the way from Amarillo/ Truck stop red lips pullin' on some nicotine/ Shining like the spoke on a brand new El Dorado/ You're trailer park pretty, but you're never gonna be Jolene." The singer also pulls out an unexpected, faithful cover of Mick Jagger's "Wandering Spirit," turning the rockabilly flair up to 11. "Strange" is an instant classic vibrant with Fleetwood Mac vibes, while "Country Money" has a cool '70s AOR feel-complete with Joe Walsh-esque guitar-and a winking storyline about getting rich without getting fancy: "Connie Johnson got a farm in Wisconsin and a diesel in the drive . and the best beef in the cheese state, baby"; "Carol Jean, she's the chicken-egg queen ... drives her hens around town in a Coupe de Ville." There's a Gene Autry lope to "If I Was a Cowboy," along with a modern-day attitude: "So mamas, if your daughters grow up to be cowboys, so what?" "Carousel" is an acoustic stunner with a tender music-box melody and a storyline full of rich symbolism-about "pretty Elena," who has a secret past life, her heart having been broken by a big-top man. "She walked the high wire back in the '80s . hanging from the top tent rafters 'til the spotlight disappeared. The way he earned her trust was on a 20-foot trapeze/ She fell so hard because he always let her fly/ 'Til he left her heart suspended in a cotton-candy sky." And "Music City Queen" might not hold up for a future "Best Of" record, but it's fun right now. Swirling in swamp-blues guitar, it features the B-52's on backing vocals-including Fred Schneider doing a kitsch call-and-response-and witty lines (about a river boat!) like "She's had the same red carpet since '79 and she was 'ah, ah, stayin' alive.'" It was produced by Terry Manning and released in January 1985. Some of its songs are among Thorogood's best-known, including "I Drink Alone" and "Willie and the Hand Jive", the latter being his only single to reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart. George Thorogood is forever consistent and Maverick is more of the blues/rock driving sound the journeyman guitarist is known for. John Lee Hooker's "Crawling King Snake" is what you expect from this crew while "Memphis, Tennessee" bursts at the seams with George's trademark slide and Hank Carter's saxophone. Recorded at the legendary Dimension Sound Studio in July of 1984 on the outskirts of Boston, the earthy sound catches all the band's primal energy from opener "Gear Jammer" to the wailing sax of "Long Gone." There are only four originals from Thorogood, the album chock full of Johnny Otis, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, John Lee Hooker and others. It is territory that the group has covered on pretty much every previous record, but it's done with the artistic passion that makes it real. It's soooooo manic." It was so manic, Halsey decided Manic was the right title for this high-profile album, the first they've released since 2017's Hopeless Fountain Kingdom helped turn them into a regular presence at the top of the charts. As it turns out, Manic is indeed an appropriate name for an album so filled with twists and turns it feels like a double-LP crammed into the course of a 47-minute record. Such a description is slightly misleading, though, suggesting that the album contains a series of distinct shifts in mood when it is very much a record of its moment, thrumming along to the tasteful shape-shifting hybrids that populate playlists of all genres. Listen closely, certain stylistic aspects assert themselves -- a fingerpicked guitar line rolls along here, there's a reggae bounce there -- and their choice of guest stars is telling. Alanis Morissette -- who is by some measures a clear precursor to Halsey -- vies with rapper Dominic Fike and Suga of K-pop sensations BTS for the splashiest cameo, with each of their appearances labeled as an "interlude." The lack of concrete song titles winds up emphasizing the presence of artists who cross genres, a clear sign of how Manic's seemingly scattershot appearance disguises that Halsey designed the album to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, streamlining all these sounds so they slide onto every conceivable playlist. It's a shrewd ploy that winds up not seeming crass thanks to Halsey's affectless emo bloodletting -- she never resists an opportunity to hit their target squarely on the nose, such as the "I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you" refrain on "You Should Be Sad" -- and the clever way Manic is sequenced. The artiest, wobbliest songs start the record, followed by their saddest and starkest ballads, so it takes a while before it settles into its comfortable groove of adolescent angst doubling as AAA crossover pop. A lighter affair than Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane is actually a stranger album than its predecessor, buoyed by bizarre lounge-jazz flourishes from pianist Mick Garson and a handful of winding, vaguely experimental songs. Bowie abandons his futuristic obsessions to concentrate on the detached cool of New York and London hipsters, as on the compressed rockers "Watch That Man," "Cracked Actor," and "The Jean Genie." Bowie follows the hard stuff with the jazzy, dissonant sprawls of "Lady Grinning Soul," "Aladdin Sane," and "Time," all of which manage to be both campy and avant-garde simultaneously, while the sweepingly cinematic "Drive-In Saturday" is a soaring fusion of sci-fi doo wop and melodramatic teenage glam. Alas, all to no avail, as the majority of fans were not impressed with the mostly mediocre results heard on confused albums like Renewal and Cause for Conflict. Even the welcome addition of guitar ace Tommy Vetterli (ex-Coroner) lent more consistency than actual sparks to 1997's Outcast, and 1999's similarly dependable but hardly impressive Endorama eventually followed suit. Initial highlights such as "Golden Age," the title track, and "Chosen Few" are heavy on mid-paced grooves and gothic atmospherics, but still offer little songwriting redemption. For all their studiously constructed lyrics and supposed compositional maturity, they absolutely scream for some sign, any sign, of deeper emotion to snap them out of their glazed state of performed automation. Not even the keyboards that pervade the highly unorthodox "Passage to Babylon," nor the more energetic riffing contained in "Willing Sprit" can ultimately jolt the album into a higher plane of achievement, but then, Endorama still qualifies among Kreator's most cohesive statements from this under-achieving decade.
