Rondo Vivace The award-winning pianist Sveinung Bjelland is from Stavanger and was the recipient of Concerts Norway's "Young Soloist of the Year" award in 1999. In the international press he is described as an outstanding lieder pianist. His album of sonatas of Scarlatti and Mendelssohn is testimony to his exquisite sense of style and sound. His previous release on the LAWO Classics label, "Rachmaninoff/Shostakovich: Cello Sonatas" (LWC1131) with cellist Audun Sandvik, received glowing reviews in Norway and abroad. The Norwegian Radio Orchestra accompanies Bjelland on this fantastic recording of Chopin's Piano Concerto No 1 coupled with Schumann's Introduction and Allegro appassionato. Conductor, composer and pianist, Christian Eggen is one of the most influential personalities on the Norwegian music scene, ranging from contemporary music via genre-merging projects, installations, television and radio drama productions to film, theatre, jazz, opera and classical music. As a conductor, he is known as one of Europe's finest interpreters of contemporary music and has worked closely with composers such as Morton Feldman, John Cage and Helmut Lachenmann. 3. Artist: Davy Mooney & The Hope of Home Band Title: Live at National Sawdust Year Of Release: 2020 Label: Sunnyside Records Genre: Jazz Quality: Mp3 320 kbps / FLAC (tracks) / 24bit-96kHz FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 67:19 Total Size: 156 / 370 MB / 1.29 GB Tracklist: 01. Prospectin' - Live (11:07) 08. Angela's Sad Song - Live (6:45) 09. Swingset - Live (8:58) It is easy to take live performances for granted. Easy to overlook the magic that happens when artists come together to express themselves and reach appreciative listeners. There is a certain energy that is only felt in the moment of musical creation, a give and take between musicians and the audience. That communal spirit should not be overlooked, especially, now in these times of quarantine and separation. Guitarist/composer Davy Mooney knows just how special these experiences are and wanted to capture the essence of their magic on his new recording, Live at National Sawdust. On the recording, Mooney brings together his incredible Hope of Home band, featuring saxophonist John Ellis, pianist Jon Cowherd, bassist Matt Clohesy and drummer Brian Blade, to play old and new material for a receptive group of listeners at Brooklyn's National Sawdust and to conjure a fabulously warm and heartfelt performance that can be revisited over and over. Originally from New Orleans, Mooney lived in, and performed regularly around, New York City for years. Over the past three years, he has been living and teaching in Denton, Texas at the University of North Texas. The change has allowed Mooney the opportunity to focus on more contemporary music as he mentors the next generation of up-and-coming jazz players. The effect of this can be heard in Mooney's own playing and composing, as he continues to evolve. New York City remains a touchstone for Mooney and his regular visits to the City provide ample opportunities to remain a part of the contemporary scene. There is a certain edge and talent level in New York that Mooney wants to remain engaged with, the Hope of Home Band being a testament to that, as most of the members live in the City. Mooney originally met Cowherd and Blade at the Monk Institute in 2008 and performed with Blades' Fellowship Band in 2009. The continued involvement of these two plus stalwarts Ellis and Clohsey as members of his band for nearly a decade continues to humble the guitarist. Typically, he finds a way to present his star studded band on these visits and his recent January 2020 trip once again provided this opportunity. But on this trip, Mooney wanted to try something a bit different. He decided to attempt a live recording of the Hope of Home Band. Of course, the first consideration for finding a venue is to find a good piano. Cowherd was quick to suggest National Sawdust, as they not only have a great piano but a state of the art recording setup. Mooney and the Hope of Home Band assembled at National Sawdust on January 27, 2020 with engineer Sascha von Oertzen. Of course, live recordings have their challenges. The performers have to consider the audience and can not just start over again. But that is precisely why live recordings can be amazing. The emphasis on being in the moment supercedes the idea of perfection, typically producing compelling performances. The pieces that Mooney brought to record were a mixture of staple pieces from his repertoire going back for nearly 15 years and new pieces that were written with the promise of this recording. Some of the older pieces are rarities that the guitarist brought out from his first recordings from 2009, Astoriano and Last Train Home, a duo album with John Pizzarelli. The program begins with a sort of suite written for the members of his family. The bouncy "Kid Flash" is a new piece inspired by Mooney's son Andrés's love of action hero cartoons, the piece being a new arrangement of a composition the guitarist wrote for UNT's guitar ensemble. "Milly's Song" uses a singsong cadence that Mooney's youngest son, Milton, frequently sings, arranged into a gorgeously subtle composition. The floating "St. Paul's" is named for Mooney's wife Angela's native São Paulo, Brazil and is a whimsical piece with cascading guitar and saxophone. The haunting "Zona Leste" takes its name from a favorite neighborhood in São Paulo and is an adaptation of a Chinese melody, "Jasmine Flower." The subtly swinging "Wrinkles" comes from Astoriano and is adapted well for this highly communicative band. From the same recording, the winsome "Moon Song" is a lovely feature for Mooney's guitar and voice, while "Prospectin'" gets a fantastic new treatment from the Band. "Angela's Sad Song" is a gorgeous ballad written for Mooney's wife that showcases Clohesy's stunning bass work and Ellis's warm bass clarinet. The recording concludes with a bright and uncontrived take of "Swingset." The communal aspect of music making is missing in the world right now. Guitarist Davy Mooney feels it dearly and hopes to provide some of that much-needed energy to the public with his Hope of Home Band and their heartwarming new recording, Live at National Sawdust. 4. SANTIAGO SUNRISE (4:43) Second solo album by James Dean Bradfield from the Manic Street Preachers. An ultra-vivid eulogy to a brilliant life cut short, Even in Exile is a beautiful collection of songs that loosely trace to story of the life and death of Chilean poet-singer-activist Victor Jara. At points pure and biographical, at others dreamlike and opaque, Bradfield sets words written specifically for the album by poet / playwright Patrick Jones to some of the most addictive and affecting melodies he's ever composed. Influenced by records and artists as diverse as Rush's Moving Pictures, The Bad Plus' Never Stop 2, Kamasi Washington's Heaven and Earth, The Welsh Connection by Man, John Cale's Walking On Locusts, Pink Floyd's Meddle, The Marble Index by Nico, The Beaten Generation by The The and the music of Alessandro Alessandroni, I Cantori Moderni and Violetta Parra, Even in Exile was played almost entirely by Bradfield and recorded at Door To The River Studio in South Wales. It features ten original compositions and a cover of Victor Jara's La Partida. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Studie 18: Maestoso, ma molto calmo (Fuga a 3 (4) Soggetti) (15:11) With its fourteen fugues and four canons, all of which are derived from the same thematic germ cell, J. S. Bach's "The Art of Fugue" contains within it a veritable cornucopia of constructional variants. In his own Studies, Reinhard Febel takes apart the constituent elements of Bach's work and reassembles them in completely new ways, occasionally opening up the musical material and allowing it to range over the entire keyboard. With their refined and extremely complex "manipulations", these Studies produce a brilliant and occasionally even dramatically expressive undertow. They were commissioned by the Duo Tal & Groethuysen, who have now recorded them for the present world-premiere release. In composing the fugues and canons that make up "The Art of Fugue", Bach was presumably thinking of the sound world of a keyboard instrument, although he never specified this unambiguously. As a result, this has legitimized a whole range of disparate versions for different combinations of instruments. Yaara Tal and Andreas Groethuysen - both of them well known as outstanding pianists - were drawn to the idea of interpreting the work as a piano duet. The term "study" stresses the idea of exploring and experimenting with different compositional possibilities and in that way finds its counterpart in Bach's conception of the word "contrapunctus". The Art of Fugue was not primarily intended for performance but was designed as a compendium of the possibilities of contrapuntal composition at a time when the golden age of this art already lay in the past. Yet Alban Berg was only one of many commentators to observe that a work regarded by many as based on pure mathematics has a uniquely profound musical depth to it. Bach maintains an impressive balance between academically abstract composition and the art of sensual expression. And the same is true for Febel's Studies. 6. Artist: Dean Hurley Title: Concrete Feather Year Of Release: 2020 Label: Boomkat Editions • Documenting Sound / BKEDITDS015 Genre: Ambient, Experimental Quality: 24bit-44,1kHz FLAC Total Time: 35:56 Total Size: 301 mb Tracklist 1. Side A (17:13) 2. Side B (15:42) Lynch protégé and Twin Peaks sound designer Dean Hurley coaxes an incredible puzzlebox of atmospheres and mood pieces in a killer contribution to our Documenting Sound series, perhaps its most cinematic and neon-lit instalment thus far. It sounds like a smudged and overdubbed copy of the BoC Maxima tape, with added iridescence. Across almost 40 minutes we transition from aerosolised synths to romantic chromatics, thru to NWW-style severed rhythms and fading glimmers of hope, 'Concrete Feather' epitomises Hurley's prized knack for nuanced instrumental story-telling in the finest and most engrossing style we could imagine. Against the backdrop of the Hollywood film industry that has primed us for as long as we can all remember, the music spans a panorama of lush, mirage-like choral pads and starry flickers thru to gloaming nightmare sequences and screwed drums, while touching on some of the dankest synth tones this side of his 'Anthology Resource' volumes or indeed his soundtrack work for Twin Peaks: The Return. It's full of dread and a slowly unfolding sense of tragedy. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

He became a professional in 1947 and had stints with Georgie Auld, Lionel Hampton, Charlie Parker (on an occasional basis during 1953-1955), Art Blakey (1954), and Don Redman. Gordon was with Dizzy Gillespie's 1956 big band, touring the Mideast, and getting a solo on "Night in Tunisia." He was in the Horace Silver quintet, moved back to Boston for a period, and then relocated to Los Angeles where he worked and recorded with Barney Kessel, Benny Carter, Harold Land, Shelly Manne, Dexter Gordon, and Shelly Manne (1958-1960). Joe Gordon, who led dates for EmArcy (1955) and Contemporary (1961), was on one Thelonious Monk recording and spent his last few years as a freelance musician. ~ Scott Yanow Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Let Him Come In (9:01) 08. Glory, Glory, Since I Laid My Burden Down (3:40) 09. Put Your Trust In Jesus (4:21) The opening measures of the Howard Lemon Singers' "I Am Determined" command sincerity, as well as attention. Delicate woodwinds lure in all who are able to hear before halting brass notes disarm the melody and the group begs, "Stop, look, listen to the voice of Jesus." Unlike more famous versions of the song, sung before in a romantic fashion by the Stylistics and Diana Ross with Marvin Gaye, the Howard Lemon Singers sing in a state of alert, as if there is little time to settle your heart with Jesus. They sing with the same urgency on "Let Him Come In" and "Glory, Glory Since I Laid My Burden Down," where each member offers their own testimony. Aided by a blistering and steady rhythm, the song inspires the instinct to dance just as easily as it might one to rejoice. On an album by a group which specializes in covertly encroaching into the territories of funk and soul while delivering the good news of the Lord, the song is right at home. Trois Chorals: No. 3 in A minor On my retirement from the Norwegian Academy of Music, I was given the generous offer of the use of the Uranienborg organ to practice on, an offer I have made very good use of. Over the years I have become increasingly enthusiastic about the instrument. Every time I sit down on the organ bench I relive some of the youthful excitement I felt that led me to choose the organ as my career. I had been toying with the idea of recording Franck's organ works for some years and had had in mind an instrument maintained in an uncompromising, French symphonic style. As I gradually played my way through the repertoire, however, I realized that it would not be easy to find a Cavaillé-Coll copy that would meet the demands of Franck's music as well as the organ at Uranienborg did. Here I found a clarinet on the Ryggpositiv that could be used as a solo stop accompanied by full swell in the Grande Pièce Symphonique. There are flutes that balance full swell in the Final; a beautiful, singing tone in the foundation stops, and an impressive tutti. I do perhaps miss having French pedal reeds, the sound is sometimes a little too rounded. Neither is the flute on the Great overblowing as it would be in the French tradition, but what does that matter when it makes such a lovely sound? 17. Artist: Ellis/Munk Ensemble Title: San Diego Sessions Year Of Release: 2020 Label: El Paraiso Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Jazz Rock Quality: Mp3 320 kbps / FLAC (tracks) / 24bit-44.1kHz FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 48:55 Total Size: 112 / 308 / 559 MB Tracklist: 1. The Wedge (10:55) 2. Pauly's Pentacles (11:11) 3. Munk's Dream (2:24) 4. Electric Saloon (8:56) 5. Bucket Drips (3:34) 6. Larry's Jungle Juice (6:53) 7. Stone Steps (5:05) There's really no other place like San Diego. The weather's balmy all year, there's 70 miles of the finest coastline California has to offer, it has one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the US and - most importantly - it's currently THE epicenter for heavy psychedelic rock. Bands such as Earthless, Astra and Radio Moscow have paved the way for an astounding number of bands, creating a tight knit community of musicians. On this session Denmark's Jonas Munk (Causa Sui) joins forces with San Diego native Brian Ellis (who's not only a prime mover in the psychedelic scene, but has also been active in California's jazz and funk circuits for several years), and an assemblage of prime musicians from the area, including members of Astra, Psicomagia, Monarch, Radio Moscow and Sacri Monti. The result is an intoxicating brew that's hard to put a label on. Fueled by the furious drumming of Paul Marrone, and led by Jonas Munk's fuzzy lead guitar and the multicolored keys of Brian Ellis, there's an unmoored, floating quality to the music the large ensemble was creating at these sessions. It's the kind of record you can put on and just let it wash over you. The closest references would be Miles Davis circa Bitches Brew, Hendrix at Woodstock, or perhaps Can at their most blazing and levitational. The music flows like an electric river of vintage keys, percussion and fuzz guitars. And it's glowing with life. Vinyl comes in gatefold sleeve with art by Alan Forbes and liner notes by Jonas Munk. For fans of Causa Sui, Earthless and Psicomagia this set is not to be missed! Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Though a graduate of the Berklee School of Music in Boston and later an adjunct professor at Long Beach City College, Potenza's real schooling came at the foot of legendary jazz guitarist Joe Pass where he majored in chord melody and inversions. Pass's teachings are on full display on Sand Dance, shuffling effortlessly between bossa nova rhythm, pop 'n' slap style funk, and soft pop hookery. But its Potenzas easy-breezy guitar work that perfectly stitches everything together omnipresently and comforts the listener through every twist and turn. Like a favorite beach, Sand Dance is an album that never gets old and surprises with each revisit. Tracklist: 01. Frank Potenza - Sand Dance (3:32) 02. Frank Potenza - Miki (3:58) 03. Feux d'artifice 25. L'Isle joyeuse, L. 106 Debussy had been planning Préludes for two or three years before the first book was published in 1910. He seems to have been at work on the second book by the end of 1911 and the volume was published in 1913. Whereas Bach and Chopin used their Preludes as something of a technical exercise, composing one for each musical key, Debussy's were free-form and full of his signature expressive indulgences. Each one has a different descriptive title that gives clues about what was going through the composer's mind when he was writing them, from Shakespearean dances to underwater cathedrals. What Debussy did in the Préludes and earlier works with a similar inspiration was composing with sounds rather than notes. It is that, rather than their picturesque qualities, that changed history. Debussy did nothing less than liberate music from the domination by functional harmony which had prevailed for three centuries. Tonality becomes colour.
