  1. Artist: Paolo Russo Title: Imaginary Soundtrack Year Of Release: 2019 Label: Odradek Records Genre: fusion of jazz, world Quality: 16-bit/44.1kHz FLAC; 24-bit/96kHz FLAC & booklet Total Time: 51:29 Total Size: 302 MB; 1.05 GB Imaginary Soundtrack - Paolo Russo In Imaginary Soundtrack, Paolo Russo and friends invite you to create your own narrative to accompany their vivid, suggestive soundworld. Rather than following an existing storyline, composer Paolo Russo seeks to encourage the listener to create his or her own characters, dialogue, moods and landscapes as his music unfolds. In this way, anyone can build in their mind a unique tale in combination with this music, reflecting personal idiosyncrasies, desires, visions and ideas. Listeners are sure to be inspired by an unusual and colourful combination of instruments: Russo plays the bandoneon, and is joined in his dream-weaving endeavour by a trio of outstanding musicians: Thommy Andersson from Sweden on double bass, Roberto Torto from Italy on recorders, and Danish percussionist David Hildebrandt on vibraphone. Stylistically, the music draws upon Russo's distinctive fusion of jazz, world and pop styles, influenced by travels from his native Italy to his current home in Denmark to Buenos Aires and beyond. Russo's fellow musicians draw upon a similarly diverse range of influences to make this a truly captivating album. 01. David Hildebrandt - Madrugada (2:53) 02. Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in C Major, BWV 564: III. Fugue The Finland based German organist Susanne Kujala has gained the reputation to be one of Finland's most outstanding organists. Contemporary music is an essential part of her work: she has premiered over 50 works and two, soon three concertos. Like contemporary music sometimes does, the organ works of J. S. Bach felt very modern to the people of his time. Bach's works are still fresh and inspiring as the program of this album proves. "Bach on Porthan Organ" continues Susanne Kujala's series of introducing Finland's organs to a larger audience. Her debut release "Organ Triptychon" was recorded on three significant instruments of Helsinki. This new album features the Porthan Organ of St. Lawrence Church in Janakkala. The series is to be continued with her upcoming release "Finnish Organ Music of the 21th Century", which has been recorded already on the organs of Turku Cathedral, Helsinki Kallio and St. Paul's Church. Organ builder Martti Porthan made the organ building style of the German Baroque alive in Finland. All main features of the Porthan organ of St. Lawrence in Janakkala are based on the famous Huß Schnitger organ of Ss. Cosmae et Damiani in Stade. This album is the 25th anniversary recording of the Porthan organ, which was built in 1993. 4. Artist: Sviatoslav Richter Title: Richter meets Beethoven: Sonatas for piano Nos 12, 17 & 23 Year Of Release: 2020 Label: Jube Classic Genre: Classical Quality: FLAC (tracks) [48kHz/24bit] Total Time: 1:05:04 Total Size: 647 / 269 MB Tracklist: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Sonata Nr. 12 in a Flat Major, op. 12 01 Andante con variaziono 02 Scherzo. Allegro molto 03 Marcia funebre sulla morte d'un Eroe 04 Allegro Sonata No. 17 in D Minor, op. 31, No. 2 05 Largo - Allegro 06 Adagio 07 Allegretto Sonata No. 23 in F Minor, Op. 57 "Appassionata" 08 Allegro assai 09 Andante con moto 10 Allegro ma non troppo Having learned the fundamentals of music from his father, Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter taught himself the piano and had already given public concerts before entering the Moscow Conservatory in 1937. While still a student, Richter won first prize at the All-Union Contest of Performers of 1945. His playing earned him considerable renown, and by the time of his graduation in 1947 he had devoted fans. In 1949 he garnered the coveted Stalin Prize. Richter gave the 1942 premiere of Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 6 -- the composer's first work in that form for years, and the first one he did not premiere himself. This resulted in wild acclaim for both performer and composer. Thereafter, Richter was a great proponent of Prokofiev's music, premiering also the Seventh and the Ninth Sonatas, the latter of which is dedicated to him. Though word of Richter's excellence (and occasional poor-quality recordings) had spread outside of Russia, his foreign engagements were limited to Eastern Bloc countries (and, in one case, China) where Soviet officials felt there was reduced risk of defection. However, his 1958 performance of Prokofiev's Fifth Piano Concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra (on tour in Leningrad) generated such excitement that he was finally permitted to tour the United States, further bolstering his reputation as a virtuoso. Engagements in all of world's musical centers followed. Richter was known as a pianist of transcendent abilities, particularly adept at highlighting the nuances of different styles. Though his interests focused primarily on music of Beethoven, and Prokofiev, he was also highly regarded for his Schubert, Schumann, Bach, Debussy, and Ravel; and in the early 1960s he made a memorable recording of Benjamin Britten's Piano Concerto with the composer conducting. Richter did not favor studio recordings; therefore, most of his recordings are from live performances. Many of them, particularly those from Soviet concerts, suffer from indifferent sound quality and excessive audience noise, but his playing had an electric quality that transcended these handicaps. The pianist earned a reputation for being difficult and aloof. He was notoriously apt to cancel performances on whims, or arrive late without explanation or apology. However, those who heard him were rarely disappointed. He preferred intimate concert settings over big auditoriums, and thus returned many times to the Aldeburgh and Spoleto Festivals. He was the centerpiece of the Fêtes Musicales, held annually beginning in 1964 at Grange de Meslay, near Tours. Among his greatest recordings are his Schubert sonatas, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev concertos, Liszt concertos (these have the benefits of first-rate sound), and his Schumann. He has also served as a chamber musician and accompanist, playing piano duets with Britten, and accompanying Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, among others. ~ Rovi Staff Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Little Lies (5:17) On their 2020 album, the congenial, imaginative Lebanese three-piece have grown noticeably and achieve a rare feat: to welcome you with open arms upon the first encounter and lead you deeper into the multi-layered depths of their work with every new visit. The magical first impression lasts throughout this string of gloriously mellow autumn-coloured pop gems, but the true music connoisseur with a taste for genre-crossing experiences will find bliss on each and every intense dive into their world, with every trip underneath the surface bringing to light new treasures. Almost completely removed from the musical roots of their home country, Julia Sabra, Pascal Semerdjian and Marwahn Tohme explore the vast stylistic territories of the European and American continents, while their English lyrics talk about their everyday life in the Lebanese capital Beirut. The vocals delivering them are amazingly smooth, with crystal clear and mysteriously breathy moments. But aside from the haunting energy of the charming lead vocalist's angelic voice, the instrumental parts are impressively creative, expressive and varied with a magnetic pull, giving two-minute gems and epics lasting five minutes or more their breathtakingly colourful diversity which will surprise you even after several spins. At first, you will hear uncompromisingly distorted edginess, dry The Cure-twang, eclectic guitars, playful drums and silky, heart-warming, multi-layered vocal clouds wafting through the room. But soon you come across additional layers of beautifully placed sound effects and exciting key work that combine to a rich and emotive sound that transcends genre limits - an irresistible invitation to immerse yourself in the elements. Deep under the sea, you hear the sound of the waves; here the sea being your life, and the waves your days. From one shore to another, from tempest to tempest and from a moon-lit haven to another. Inside the eternal universe of this oyster shell, which seems to be tiny, you wrap yourself in the tinsel blanket of memories. Inside this oyster shell, you, a granule of sand, transform into a lunar piece; while the sand is your childhood and your most radiant state is your youth. The oyster sings to the sea, and you hear that song with all your existence, dreaming of swimming out of that oyster shell and facing your own reflection on the surface of the sea. You are the one who is closest to yourself. Who can understand you better than you? Who can understand me better than me? Here, with my music, I tried to tell how my 35-year-long journey transformed me from a granule of sand into a pearl. May everybody in this life find out who they are, and see their pearls within. 01. Rhino wisely chose studio wiz Bill Inglot to remaster the 13 tracks on this offering, making it one of, if not the best, post-'70s repackaging of Blue Cheer material. Inglot -- whose credits include hundreds of impressive titles from the likes of Ray Charles, David Bowie, Deep Purple, Aretha Franklin, and many more stars from the world of rock, pop, soul, blues, and jazz -- adds some of his trademark punch and sizzle to the somewhat hastily (if not cheaply) recorded tracks from Blue Cheer's seminal early recordings, Vincebus Eruptum and Outsideinside. The group's biggest hits, "Summertime Blues" and "Out of Focus," get spruced up nicely on Louder Than God, as does the remaining material from the especially small sounding Vincebus Eruptum. Obtaining this record might indeed be the best, or at least most cost-efficient way for casual fans to add essential music from the very influential Blue Cheer to their hard rock/heavy metal collection. While they have been together for over 20 years, they still seem content on an organic and sustainable growth. For the rest of the country, they may not bring their lively shows through town annually, that is unless they are supporting new material and an album release. Tangle Of Time, released October 2nd on Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records label and accompanied by a 18-stop fall tour, is exactly what I'd come to expect from the band's playbook, but may be something different for those accustomed to their live reputation. ALO is a group that continues to add superb studio snapshots to their growing catalog, now 8 albums deep . But it also exemplifies the qualities you don't typically find from a band that is renown for the live expeirence. Tangle, like their other studio albums, appears built to satisfy a separate desire than the live show. If you have a negative connotation with the word "poppy", how's this? Approachable. This ALO record is rooted in feel good and uplifting songs, and saves its darker spaces for sinister funk exercises -- fun with a "k". It is the yin to the live yang, capable of taking on different forms: in the car on a late night drive, the complement to your morning cup of coffee, a proper send-off to a long day, or simply reflecting on life while a comfortable breeze comes through an open window. On Tangle, the band finds its footing as an emotional storyteller, unspooling tales beautifully through different voices, styles, and plenty of brushes, fitting so many different moods. Tangle of Time is balanced and mature, with more vocal depth that perhaps any of their previous releases and grows with each listen. Substantial contributions beyond the the most recognizable voice in the band -- keyboard, ukulele and accordionist Zach Gill -- highlight where ALO is heading. The musical growth and confidence of bassist Steve Adams, and drummer Dave Brogan are apparent, drawing closer to territory previous owned by Gill and guitarist Dan Lebowitz. "There Was A Time" opens the album with a joyful ALO swing, while "Simple Times", "A Fire I Kept", "Sugar", and "Strange Days" channel a Randy Newman-like power out of Gill. The studio nearly yields a potential signature live ALO jam on album's most promising launchpad: "The Ticket" . What first could be interpreted as a "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" doppelgänger eventually runs off its synth heavy rails and finds a deep-space groove. Adams' back up vocals throughout hint at that evolution and do moreso with every listen. He takes the lead on a pair of tunes he contributed -- "Not Old Yet" and "Keep On" -- providing the collection some vocal contrast without disrupting the flow or theme. Both are upbeat songs are about maintaining positivity and perspective. Lebowitz' "Undertow" is a ethereal jam with a driving beat that showcases this underappreciated guitarists' chops -- it sounds like it could yield some serious tension and release eruptions this fall. Meanwhile, another Lebo song, "Push" provides a small glimpse into what Phil Lesh and Steve Kimock wanted when they included him on tours and shows recently. Brogan's lone nugget standouts in more ways than one. While there is nothing threatening or unsavory about ALO, it is welcome if they at least present the capability of going there. Brogan's "Coast to Coast" conjures this space: dark and funky with plenty of deep pockets. The maturity of Tangle of Time provides the sense of hearing a band without the pressure or rush of doing something for the sake of doing it. It is an album that blends purpose and inspiration to create a definitive document, that stands as a complement to its remarkable achievements on the road. This is the first in a three part series, spotlighting ALO, Animal Liberation Orchestra, for The Barn Presents. Keep an eye out for our interview with keyboardist, vocalist and songwriter Zach Gill and then a review of their 10/14 Double Door show with New Orleans punk pop band Yojimbo. 01. Massig rasch Ever since it was founded, the Swiss chamber ensemble Trio Fontane has consisted of Andrea Wiesli, Noëlle Grüebler and Jonas Kreienbühl. The trio was formed in 2002 and received instruction from Ulrich Koella and Stephan Goerner (Carmina Quartet) at the Musikhochschule in Zurich. The ensemble was judged the best piano trio at the 2007 Migros Culture Percentage chamber music competition and accepted into the "Young Musicians" artist exchange. The three performers received further support from the Thiébaud-Frey Foundation, the Hans Schaeuble Foundation and the International Herzogenberg Society. The Music Department of the Zentralbibliothek Zürich was set up in 1971 and rapidly established itself as an academic collection of European status. Alongside large holdings of printed and recorded music, the Department is home to one of the world's largest collections of Wagneriana and now serves as a major repository of Swiss music manuscripts from the past 200 years. The Central Library wishes to put the materials entrusted to it to the best possible use in many different ways. Accordingly, it has begun a series of releases with music from its acquisitions, from tenor songs by Zwingli to music of the late 20th century. It also runs its own lunchtime concert series Mittagsmusik im Predigerchor in which each programme features at least one work that is held in the Central Library as a manuscript, first edition or early printed document. On the album you can hear the New Year's pieces of the Zentralbibliothek Zürich: the Piano Trio op. 20 by Hans Huber and the Piano Trio op. 1 by Hermann Goetz. 18. Artist: Hideki Togi Title: Songs Of The World Year Of Release: 2017 Label: UNIVERSAL MUSIC LLC Genre: World; Jazz Quality: 16-bit/44.1kHz FLAC; 24-bit/96kHz FLAC Total Time: 1:03:11 Total Size: 342; 549 MB He is the man responsible for bringing gagaku back into the Japanese lexicon. He is to gagaku (classical Japanese court music) what Ayumi Hamasaki is to J-Pop. Since Hideki Togi left the Imperial Household Agency in 1996, armed with his hichiriki, black leather pants and cool charm, he has been on a self-proclaimed mission to "communicate this indescribable buzz - the cosmic truth - of gagaku" to the nation. Two Japan Record Awards and nine albums later, the nation has been seduced. This 43-year-old former gagakushi (Imperial court musician) has come a long way since his days playing in the Imperial Household Agency's Board of Ceremonies at official events and Shinto rituals. These days he plays in front of thousands of predominately female fans at venues across Japan. Something of a darling among my mother's generation, perhaps he should be considered a sophisticated alternative to the Cliff Richards and Tom Joneses of the world. Having wrapped up a marathon national tour to promote his new "fusion" album, "I Am With You," in November, Togi is taking a bit of a breather before the start of his New Year's (shinshun) concert series in January. This third annual tour - on which he will be joined by musicians from Xian, China - affords fans a rare chance to experience pure gagaku, stripped of any fusion elements. Togi is not one to force his ancient art on the virgin ears of the uninitiated public. Nonetheless, his quiet revolution seems to be making inroads into the national consciousness, imperceptibly filtering in via the soundtracks of PS2 software ("Kamaitachi no Yoru 2") and scores for NHK specials. Togi, however, would argue that gagaku has always been present in the Japanese subconscious. Togi comes from a family of gagaku musicians in which the tradition has been passed down through the generations. To the average Japanese person, however, gagaku is something of a mystery. Often played during Shinto rituals, Japanese-style weddings and Imperial court events, gagaku is a combination of instrumental music, song and dance that has been practiced for over a thousand years in some form or another. Togi traces its ancestry back to Korea and China, and even to areas as distant as western segments of the famed Silk Road. But gagaku, as I was to discover, is more than just "music" - it also carries some hefty philosophical baggage. There is a curious Aristotelian logic to Togi's belief in the scientific perfection of gagaku. "Gagaku is the product of centuries of study by astronomers, mathematicians, musicians and physicists into the kind of music best suited to the Japanese ear. The present form of gagaku was finally perfected in the Heian Period [704-1185]," he says. "Gagaku appeals to our primal instincts - we not only listen to gagaku, but feel it with the whole of our being. It's in our DNA." Still, one can't help wondering what causes hordes of Japanese OLs and housewives to get so excited about music that emanates from Togi's trademark hichiriki. Appearances are deceptive in the world of Hideki Togi, and the simple appearance of this 20-cm long reed instrument belies the richness of its musical vocabulary. Although Togi partly attributes the beauty of gagaku to a pure sound that is "emptied of all emotion," the expressiveness of the hichiriki in his hands is astounding. The instrument seems to encompass the sounds of its Western counterpart - the oboe - and the seductiveness of the erhu (Chinese violin), while morphing into a sax on jazzier pieces, and at times even echoing the grandeur of Scottish bagpipes. His forays into other musical genres have proved that this ancient instrument has many voices. Despite his mystic devotion, Togi is not just about gagaku. His music seems to defy classification. "I Am With You," released in September, is probably his most extreme departure from gagaku to date. The track "Slide into the Night" almost recalls Kenny G, if it wasn't for the subtle, haunting sound of the hichiriki. Easy-listening jazz also appears on "The Reason I'm Here" and a brooding cello opens the door to an orchestral arrangement on "Furusato." Yet the gagaku sound from his previous albums is still present on "Umi no Muko no Sagashimono" and "Donna Yume wo Miteiru no?" This genre-bending doesn't seem to bother Togi. "I just make music that feels good to me," he says. Neither does Togi seem overly concerned that his success is probably more attributable to his fusion material than to the pure gagaku from which he derives his inspiration. "If people become aware of the unique sound of this wonderful instrument called the hichiriki through my music, that's great," he says. "I don't expect people to listen to gagaku and get it straight off." Togi sees his art as a way of arousing people's interest in Japanese culture. Perhaps one indicator of change, aside from his growing following, is the introduction of traditional Japanese instruments - including the shamisen and biwa - into the national school curriculum in 2001. Despite Togi's returnee background (he spent part of his childhood in Mexico and Thailand), or even perhaps because of it, he is passionate about his cultural heritage. In a country where the majority of the populace seems blinded by Western influences to its own national culture, the theme of Japanese identity in Togi's work is striking. But, as he explains, the recent "hogaku boom" is all about being Japanese and feeling good about it. While encompassing these greater ideals, Togi's music is also very personal. The haikulike quality of his songs is no coincidence - music for him is made up of mini-biographies that try to capture moments, fleeting thoughts. "Every album I've recorded has been a reflection of what I was going through at that point in my life - I write whatever comes to me at that point in time," he says. "The music for 'I Am With You,' for example, was inspired by the kids I met on my visit to a primary school in Prague. It was my parting gift to them. It was my way of saying 'bon courage' to this new generation - the future of Czechoslovakia." On the topic of his compatriots' musical endeavors, Togi says: "I listen to some Japanese music from time to time, but to be honest I can never remember the names of the artists or the songs - it's really a bit of a shame isn't it? "If my en [fate/destiny] is crossed with that person, something will come about, so I don't try to force things. I prefer to go with the flow." Going with the flow is something that seems to have worked for Togi to date, and he'll probably be riding this wave well into the future. 01. Hideki Togi - When You Wish Upon A Star (5:30) 02. Brian Eno - Breath Of Crows AllMusic Review by John Bush Drums Between the Bells is a collaboration by producer Brian Eno and poet Rick Holland. It was recorded just after Eno finished work on 2010's Small Craft on a Milk Sea, his debut for Warp, and it followed on the release schedule less than a year later. In that sense, the timing was good for such a risky project. Music and poetry are often difficult companions, and combining them is best left to experts; fortunately, Eno is just such an expert. Although Holland is an obscure poet, he first came to Eno's notice back in the late '90s (through a university project), and his poetry is very good. Although his words and thoughts are impressionistic, his themes are easier to peg: urban living, science, and the intersection of philosophy and biology. The music is almost entirely Eno's own, with only a few tracks featuring guest credits -- much less so than his previous album. While scattered moments here prove that percussion is still not his strong suit, the production is inviting, innovative, and a larger contributor to the general excellence of the record than the poetry. Eno draws mostly on ambient music for these productions, and only occasionally processes the vocals. One other characteristic, aside from Eno and Holland, makes this an unlikely success: there are a total of nine voices heard here (Holland only recites on one track). The decision to vary the speaking participants helps distinguish each piece, and gives the album just the hint of variety it needs. 20. Artist: Ensemble Darcos Title: Cante By Nuno Côrte-Real Year Of Release: 2020 Label: Odradek Records Genre: World Quality: MP3 320 kbps; 16-bit/44.1kHz FLAC; 24-bit/96 kHz FLAC Total Time: 1:08:08 Total Size: 171; 312 MB; 1.13 GB Ensemble Darcos and Nuno Côrte-Real return to Odradek with 'CANTE', which continues their exploration of Portuguese music and culture, in this case in pieces lovingly sourced and transcribed by Maria Rita Ortigao Pinto Cortez, whose essential work in Portuguese ethnomusicology has brought together a rich collection of music from the city of Serpa. Her findings represent an eclectic range of traditional folk songs and poetry that could be heard in that region up until the middle of the 1980s, in a form known today as Cante. Nuno Côrte-Real has made faithful arrangements of these works for this album, for which Ensemble Darcos is joined by the exceptional Portuguese choir, Coro Ricercare. For Côrte-Real: "The traditional music of Portugal is amongst the most beautiful and varied of any in the world This diversity and musical richness had a marked influence on my development as a composer, going back to 1996 when I began to work regularly on collections of arrangements that I called 'Novíssimo Cancioneiro', the first two books of which are presented here on this album." Ensemble Darcos is one of the most prestigious Portuguese chamber groups working today. It was created in 2002 by composer and conductor Nuno Côrte-Real for the interpretation of great European composers of chamber music, as well as the music of Côrte-Real himself. Nuno Côrte-Real has established himself as one of the most important Portuguese composers and conductors of today. He has won both 2018 and 2019 prizes for Best Classical Music Work of the Portuguese Society of Authors, with the song cycle 'Agora Muda Tudo' and the opera 'Canção do Bandido' respectively. Coro Ricercare stands out as a benchmark choir in Portugal. Since its inception, Coro Ricercare has devoted a large part of its activity to the interpretation of new Portuguese music, and has premiered more than 60 works by young Portuguese composers. This DSD music was never released on a SACD, but it is available as a DSD Download at NativeDSD. Buddy Tate was one of the most relaxed, humorous and amenable of musicians, with a personal style that was glowingly reflected in the supple and occasionally gently mocking elegance of his saxophone playing. Like many of the lyrical and romantic jazz performers of his era, Tate could perform miniature miracles with minimal materials. Shuffling a handful of soft, buttery notes and mingling them with a textural repertoire of intimately whispering intonations, was one of the most agreeable experiences in postwar jazz. But Tate could also be an exciting, hard-swinging player too, and his control of the horn in its upper register predated many of the technical advances in saxophone playing that were made by the modernists in hard bop and the avant garde. La nuit étoilée Francesco Bottigliero's numerous interests, creative energy and talent could fill more than one artistic biography. The artist pursued his passions while studying piano interpretation, composition and music education at the same time and then conducting and philosophy. On this album, we present this versatile artist in a triple role: As a composer, conductor and pianist/chamber musician, presenting pieces inspired by known and important to him figures from the world of art. Bottigliero's musical language is based on playing with sound and sonoristics, formed on already culturally coded associations. Although by definition it is tonal, the composer often uses very revealing and innovative means. The inspiration for this music is poetry, painting, architecture. It is the instrumentation that is unusual in the Portraits project, in which the main role is played by chamber string ensembles constructed in such a way as to leave room for genuine virtuosity, inherent in chamber music, in their sound palette, eagerly extended beyond classical combinations.
