Evgeni Koroliov, born October 1st 1949, is known to be an extraordinary phenomenon on the international piano scene. Without disposing spectacular attitudes, Koroliov convinces his public through an enormous spiritual understanding of the works he performs and in whose service he puts the wide range of his artistic and interpretatory abilities. His repertoire ranges from Bach, the Wiener Klassik and the works of Schubert, Chopin and Debussy to the modern classics, Messiaen and Ligeti. He has a special affinity to Bach and performed the complete Well-Tempered Clavier in Moscow at the age of seventeen. Since then Koroliov has often performed Bach's greatest works in cycles, including the Clavierübung and the Art of the Fugue, which he recorded. The latter recording provoked a memorable reaction from the composer György Ligeti: "If there was only one musical work I could take with me to an uninhabited island, I would choose Koroliov's recording of Bach, because even when left pining away with hunger and thirst, I would still listen to this recording again and again, even to my last breath." Especially his interpretations of Bach elicited an enormous response from the international music press. Numerous critics not only gave him a prominent place among the new recordings of the Bach Year 2000, but count his amongst the most important Bach recordings in history. 6. Artist: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestr Title: Anthology of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra: 4 Live the Radio Recordings 1970-1980 Year Of Release: 2006 Label: Rco Genre: Classical Quality: FLAC (tracks+.cue, log) Total Time: 17:18:35 Total Size: 4.92 GB Naturally, this 14-disc set of live recordings of the Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1970 through 1980 is only for the hardest of hardcore collectors. Who else would be interested in a collection that mixes Beethoven with Boulez, Baird and Berio, Tchaikovsky with Lutoslawski, Ginastera and Caplet, Rachmaninov with Reger, and Martin and Walton? But for the hardest of the hardcore, this set will be filled with delights. Where else could one find Karel Ancerl's suave account of Haydn's "Oxford" Symphony, Eugen Jochum's sweet account of Reger's Serenade in G major, Kiril Kondrashin's thrilling account of Sibelius' En Saga, Elly Ameling's seductive account of Berg's Der Wein, or Paul Badura-Skoda's evocative account of Martin's Second Piano Concerto? Although the sound is at best variable -- sometimes as clean as the best Philips' recordings, sometimes as noisy as the worst pirated recording -- the orchestra is never less than magnificent no matter what's on the music stand or who's on the podium. With its burnished tone, intuitive ensemble, and effortless virtuosity, the Concertgebouw is clearly one of the finest European orchestras, and this set shows them to their best advantage. So while not perhaps for everyone, anyone who loves the Concertgebouw will have to hear these recordings. Not much about this music was conventional. Certainly not its opening page. The piece launches, off the beat, with an elusive upward flourish metamorphosing into a string of motifs that spans more than three octaves. It is the libertine Don Juan leaping out in front of us, and the 25-year-old Strauss introducing himself to the world with the piece that would make his name. Most composers endure a crisis of identity before finding their true voice, but Richard Strauss was forced to do so against the backdrop of a fierce ideological battle. In his twenties, Strauss felt he was stalling: preoccupied by a functionary conducting position at the Munich Court Opera and unsure where his calling as a composer lay following a moderately successful symphony and some promising songs. It was an orchestral violinist, Alexander Ritter, who urged Strauss to explore the genre defying 'tone poems' of Franz Liszt, in which wordless orchestral music was used to recount a story. The score of "Don Juan" covers a great deal in its relatively short span. But Strauss was determined to demonstrate that a large-scale tone poem was capable of pushing orchestral music to its expressive limits. If there was a faint suggestion in Don Juan's score that the character's quest for women is also quest for meaning in life, another Don would provide Strauss with the opportunity to explore that idea from multiple angles and with irony thrown in. In 1897, the composer was drawn to Cervantes' 1605 novel "Don Quixote", which tells of a chivalrous but deluded knight errant setting out to put the world to rights - even inventing a woman, whose hand he will win, to make the enterprise worthwhile. Though Strauss had the epic philosophical tone poem "Thus Spake Zarathustra" under his belt already, his Spanish tale introduced multiple complications, notably the new level of detail required in recounting handpicked scenarios from a sprawling novel that enters the domain of magical realism. One of Strauss's solutions was to place the story - his selected segments of it, at least - in the service of what is effectively an extended character portrait. Strauss subtitled his work 'Fantastical Variations on a Theme of a Knightly Character'. It is a tone poem, a theme with ten variations, and more: with an extensive solo role for cello and more minor supporting roles for solo violin, viola and bass clarinet, it is a solo concerto and a concerto grosso too. "Don Quixote" was first performed on 8 March 1898 in Cologne, conducted by Franz Wüllner with Friedrich Grützmacher as the soloist. In some ways, it is the most ambitious of Strauss's tone poems if not the loudest nor grandest. But with Strauss, ambition has a multi-directional trajectory. Two years later he delivered a depiction of another doomed soul, this time one with a far surer idea of himself. "Till Eulenspiegel" is fearless scamp hailing from deep within German folklore. With none of Quixote's delusions of gallantry and little of Juan's suave hedonism, Till goes about playing the fool while exposing vice and corruption in German society - perhaps the noblest of all three characters if judged on the moral impetus of his pursuits (his name literally translates as 'wise mirror'). 8. Artist: Voces8, The Senesino Players, Barnaby Smith Title: J.S. Bach: Motets Year Of Release: 2010 Label: Signum Records Genre: Classical Quality: FLAC (image+.cue, log, scans) Total Time: 58:31 Total Size: 311 Mb Tracklist: Johann Sebastian Bach [1] Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, BWV 225 [2] Fürchte dich nicht, ich bin bei dir, BWV 228 [3] Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden, BWV 230 [4] Jesu, meine Freude, BWV 227 [5] Komm, Jesu, komm, BWV 229 [6] Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf, BWV 226 Performers: Voces8 The Senesino Players Directed by Barnaby Smith The young British crossover a cappella octet Voces8 sounds a bit like the King's Singers and has been advised by its members. These are light, fleet, clear performances, not usually terms associated with Bach's six motets. Even if Bach's contrapuntally weighty and theologically hardcore motets are an odd choice of repertoire for such an ensemble, it's fair to say that fans of the King's Singers will enjoy checking out Voces8. It's a bit of a misnomer for Voces8 to emphasize its status as an a cappella group in connection with this recording, for the motets are accompanied by an organ and a small group of strings. This is the fashion, however, and to go with the cutting-edge graphic design, Voces8 adopts another current trend simply by singing the motets with a small ensemble instead of a choir. The jury is very much out on this, for evidence that Bach's choral music was sometimes performed this way doesn't equal evidence that, in a time of scant material resources incomprehensible to modern performers, these were ideal performances. The chief musical argument in favor of small-group performances is that they enable a kind of madrigalian expressiveness, and here Voces8 achieves mixed results. At times (sample the opening of Jesu, meine Freude, track 4) the quick tempos lead them into mannered singing. But in general there's a commitment here toward putting the meaning of the texts across, and this is ultimately what distinguishes a good Bach vocal performance from a rote one. This commitment is reflected in the translations of the motet texts into English in the booklet -- not just parallel, but line by line, which is a practice more booklet editors ought to follow. This certainly doesn't close any books on Bach's motets, but it's an intriguing and distinctive recording. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Born in Moscow in 1949, Evgeni Coloriov studied with Neigaus, Eugena, Oborin and others, and the flow of Russian pianism. A world-class pianist. The Colorioff will be a great set of 4 albums announced by Profil so far. Like Bach, who is good at Colorioff, Haydn and Handel here are also "piano philosophers", and the warmth is felt in the correctness of the fold. Both recordings were co-produced with SWR from 2004 to 2009 with sessions organized in the same studio, and the sound quality is excellent. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Afrikansk springar A common theme on this recording is traditional music. ["Noringen" is the name of a well-known 'gangar', a Norwegian traditional dance. It was especially popular in Vestlandet, the region along the Atlantic coast of southern Norway. The dance tune was played the morning after the wedding, when the guests were served food and drink, often after having danced all night. The word means nourishment (food).] Saxophone and organ sound good together and complement each other well, yet little music has been written for this instrumental combination. For this reason, we are always looking for music that works well and often it is music written for instruments other than our own. Part of the effort of finding good music involves getting accomplished composers and arrangers to write for us. This recording is the concrete result of a concert tour we undertook in Slovakia during some hectic days in the summer of 2017. It features a broad range of music, and the quality, we feel, merits being presented on this album. In addition to the rehearsed repertoire, Bjorn Luksengard (b. 1956), church organist in Sande, Vestfold, sent us his arrangements and compositions during the tour. To some extent we developed the repertoire between the concerts and also tried out some of the music in concert situations. Not long after returning to Norway, we met for several intense days of recording in Stromso Church in Drammen. It is one of Norway's largest wooden churches and acquired its Muhleisen organ with 31 stops in 2011. The melodious organ and the church's good acoustics gave us the conditions we were looking for. 15. Artist: Sonny Criss Title: The Beat Goes On! Ode to Billie Joe Personnel Sonny Criss - alto saxophone Cedar Walton - piano Bob Cranshaw - bass Alan Dawson - drums This is one of a group of Prestige dates by Sonny Criss from the late '60s that featured the altoist elegantly ripping through pop tunes, standing them on their heads and making them into credible vehicles for his dazzling virtuosity. For this 1968 recording, Criss gets hold of Sonny Bono's "The Beat Goes On" and makes it sophisticated, soulful, and swinging. The saxophonist is ably aided in this unlikely transformation by bassist Bob Cranshaw, pianist Cedar Walton, and drummer Alan Dawson, whose swirling brush work is key to the success of the title track. The group is less successful in pulling off a similar identity change on "Somewhere My Love." The melody gets an overly snappy Las Vegas lounge treatment, but then the piece comes together for some crisp, exciting solo work. Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billy Joe" also gets the Criss treatment. Partial success again, as the rhythm section remains a bit too static. Moving outside the pop repertoire, Criss scores full marks with a fiery, focused, up-tempo version of "Yesterdays"; the mid-tempo standard "Georgia Rose"; and his own urbane blues, "Calidad." This last piece is one of the performances on the CD where Criss, with his rapid, serpentine flow of ideas, begins to sound almost like Eric Dolphy. But where Dolphy regularly pushed towards the avant-garde, Criss' astonishing abilities are based within a more traditional, accessible syntax. This time, however, the main protagonists are the oboe and the English horn, fascinating orchestral instruments that, thanks to the great virtuoso from Palermo, Antonino Pasculli, take part in that great musical activity - attended by myriads of Italian and European composers - that unconditionally suffered the charm of Italian melodrama. In this case they are the immortal melodies of Giuseppe Verdi - one of the most successful opera composers of all time - inspiring the fantasies of Pasculli, in the interpretation (both acrobatic to the oboe and cantabile and expressive to the English horn) of the master Paolo Grazia accompanied by the Orchestra Senzaspine conducted by the masters Matteo Parmeggiani and Tommaso Ussardi. Haydn makes of it a music that is light, subtle, intentionally humorous, concise and radiant, capable of leaving private drawing rooms for popular concerts. Mozart immediately detected its originality as would the classic composers of the...20th Century. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in C Major, BWV 564: III. Fugue The Finland based German organist Susanne Kujala has gained the reputation to be one of Finland's most outstanding organists. Contemporary music is an essential part of her work: she has premiered over 50 works and two, soon three concertos. Like contemporary music sometimes does, the organ works of J. S. Bach felt very modern to the people of his time. Bach's works are still fresh and inspiring as the program of this album proves. "Bach on Porthan Organ" continues Susanne Kujala's series of introducing Finland's organs to a larger audience. Her debut release "Organ Triptychon" was recorded on three significant instruments of Helsinki. This new album features the Porthan Organ of St. Lawrence Church in Janakkala. The series is to be continued with her upcoming release "Finnish Organ Music of the 21th Century", which has been recorded already on the organs of Turku Cathedral, Helsinki Kallio and St. Paul's Church. Organ builder Martti Porthan made the organ building style of the German Baroque alive in Finland. All main features of the Porthan organ of St. Lawrence in Janakkala are based on the famous Huß Schnitger organ of Ss. Cosmae et Damiani in Stade. This album is the 25th anniversary recording of the Porthan organ, which was built in 1993. Allegro molto 03 Marcia funebre sulla morte d'un Eroe 04 Allegro Sonata No. 17 in D Minor, op. 31, No. 2 05 Largo - Allegro 06 Adagio 07 Allegretto Sonata No. 23 in F Minor, Op. 57 "Appassionata" 08 Allegro assai 09 Andante con moto 10 Allegro ma non troppo Having learned the fundamentals of music from his father, Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter taught himself the piano and had already given public concerts before entering the Moscow Conservatory in 1937. While still a student, Richter won first prize at the All-Union Contest of Performers of 1945. His playing earned him considerable renown, and by the time of his graduation in 1947 he had devoted fans. In 1949 he garnered the coveted Stalin Prize. Richter gave the 1942 premiere of Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 6 -- the composer's first work in that form for years, and the first one he did not premiere himself. This resulted in wild acclaim for both performer and composer. Thereafter, Richter was a great proponent of Prokofiev's music, premiering also the Seventh and the Ninth Sonatas, the latter of which is dedicated to him. Though word of Richter's excellence (and occasional poor-quality recordings) had spread outside of Russia, his foreign engagements were limited to Eastern Bloc countries (and, in one case, China) where Soviet officials felt there was reduced risk of defection. However, his 1958 performance of Prokofiev's Fifth Piano Concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra (on tour in Leningrad) generated such excitement that he was finally permitted to tour the United States, further bolstering his reputation as a virtuoso. Engagements in all of world's musical centers followed. Richter was known as a pianist of transcendent abilities, particularly adept at highlighting the nuances of different styles. Though his interests focused primarily on music of Beethoven, and Prokofiev, he was also highly regarded for his Schubert, Schumann, Bach, Debussy, and Ravel; and in the early 1960s he made a memorable recording of Benjamin Britten's Piano Concerto with the composer conducting. Richter did not favor studio recordings; therefore, most of his recordings are from live performances. Many of them, particularly those from Soviet concerts, suffer from indifferent sound quality and excessive audience noise, but his playing had an electric quality that transcended these handicaps. The pianist earned a reputation for being difficult and aloof. He was notoriously apt to cancel performances on whims, or arrive late without explanation or apology. However, those who heard him were rarely disappointed. He preferred intimate concert settings over big auditoriums, and thus returned many times to the Aldeburgh and Spoleto Festivals. He was the centerpiece of the Fêtes Musicales, held annually beginning in 1964 at Grange de Meslay, near Tours. Among his greatest recordings are his Schubert sonatas, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev concertos, Liszt concertos (these have the benefits of first-rate sound), and his Schumann. He has also served as a chamber musician and accompanist, playing piano duets with Britten, and accompanying Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, among others. ~ Rovi Staff Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

This new release features a recording from the world premiere performance of the opera in Metzingen Stadthalle, Bad Urach, Germany, October 4th, 2002. The opera is set in Venice in 1727. In the house of Marcello, a musician and poet, two of his pupils Rosana and Faustina wait for their teacher who is late for their singing lesson. Marcello at last arrives, apologizes, and announces that instead of their lessons he wants them to sing for a guest of his, the famous composer Adolph Hasse, from Germany. Rosana sings first: a sad song about unrequited love. Hasse praises her warmly for singing from the heart, whereas Marcello is just puzzled by her sudden ability to find the correct tone. Faustina immediately recognizes that Rosana is singing about her love for Marcello and is irritated that he cannot see it himself. She then sings a joyful song about a nightingale, which leaves both Hasse and Marcello captivated. Hasse expresses his profound admiration for Marcello and she invites him to accompany her to a party that evening. Faustina is preparing for the evening and her thoughts turn to Hasse, and she realizes that she loves him. Hasse has quietly arrived and, overhearing her soliloquy, immediately tells Faustina that he has fallen in love with her too. Marcello, masked, arrives and stands outside Faustina's rooms, consumed with love for her and intending to sing her a serenade. He hears the gondola bearing Faustina and Hasse approaching, and jealously listens to their loving conversation. Hiding while they enter her apartment, he vows revenge on Hasse. Marcello wants to pick a quarrel and both men draw their swords. Faustina, who has heard the commotion outside, opens her balcony window, sees the events below and collapses with a scream. Hasse leaves, telling Marcello that he may keep his life as a pledge of their friendship... Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]
