Madrigals, Book 6: Quanto ridente e bella Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, became famous for two reasons: the bloody double murder of his first wife and her lover, and his passionate and erotic view of profane love. The Madrigals chart the changes in Gesualdo's style, and contain some of the most inspired and anguished vocal works in the entire madrigal repertoire, on the themes of love, rejection, death, suffering, joy and sorrow. Brimming with often astonishing and sometimes unpredictable melodic and tonal contrasts to express the agonies and ecstacies of love, Gesualdo's Madrigals show him to have been one of the most inventive and eccentric musical minds of his age. Martina Claussen - Verwoben (2020)

Artist: Martina Claussen Title: Verwoben Year Of Release: 2020 Label: Forwind - FWD 29 Genre: Electronic, Experimental, Electroacoustic Quality: 16bit-44,1kHz FLAC Total Time: 50:25 Total Size: 201 mb Tracklist 1. Lisa (09:15) 2. Verwoben (10:12) 3. Fairytale Extended (06:36) 4. Cri (07:14) 5. (Connected) 1.2 (17:08) Martina Claussen has been active as a composer, vocal artist and Professor of Voice in Vienna for many years. After many collaborations and appearances on some excellent compilations she's arrived at her full debut album, a project we're very excited to be part of as Forwind reaches its thirtieth release. Verwoben (Interwoven) is an engrossing, intricate album of electronics and electro-acoustics with Martina's voice being the primary sound source for most of the compositions. The five tracks were crafted over several years of experiments, recordings and live performances before finding their final form, with Martina's production and sound design skills shining through in the innovative results. Packed with movement and dynamics, Verwoben swerves between the apparent, abstract and engagingly abstruse via pensive electronics, contemporary rumblings and harsher sections all swirling around the home base of Martina's voice, that always lends the album a warmth even as the sound moves further and further out into more shadowy and desolate spaces. The visual aspect is a hugely important piece in the final presentation of the record. The final artwork - a mix of the unmissable physicality of Anastasia Pottinger's photographs with stills from Connie Zenk's stunning digital video for the title track - perfectly reflects the overall approach and mood of the record. There's both a tension and bliss in Martina's digitally manipulated 'landscape of voices', human bodies and expressions both evolving and distorting through time. It's poignant, joyful, sorrowful and provoking. Martina's ambition for Verwoben was to 'open up a wide variety of associations and new acoustic spaces through a dialogue between voice, sound objects and electronics'. That mission has been accomplished with one of the most adept and inquisitive works we've had the pleasure of releasing. Grab your headphones for an entrancing listen. Verwoben will be available as a limited edition Digipak and in all digital formats. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Pieces (2) for orchestra- Andante cantabile [0:06:20.33] 10. Pieces (2) for orchestra- Allegro ritmico [0:02:22.58] Performers: Matti Raekallio - piano Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra Tuomas Ollila - conductor Aaare Merikanto was the son of Oskar Merikanto, a Finnish organist. His talent was precocious, but political events of the 1920s and 30s caused a blacklisting of much of his music. This sad state of affairs is much rectified by these first-class recordings (world premiere, I assume because all but the 2nd Concerto is in manuscript). Raekaello plays superbly and is admirably backed by the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. The music has resonances of Prokofiev, Bartok, Shostakovich and even Rachmaninov (Merikanto once studied with Reger). The 2nd has more dissonance and is more like other 20th century concertos but the other works have more of a romantic feel about them. These smaller works have much melodic interest, as these seem to be works intended to be in a more popular style. Kudos to Ondine for releasing this CD! Deutsche Grammophon is proud to present Hope@Home the album, a selection from this ground-breaking series of livestream events which attracted a combined audience of 2,5m viewers, to be released on 14th August. This album is a document of these extraordinary weeks. Everything you hear is live, one take only. Some pieces were rehearsed, others were not. In some cases Christoph Israel finished the arrangements literally minutes before we went live. You will hear the frequent squeak of my living room floor, as well as other spontaneous bumps and bangs. There were no patches or editing, no second takes. Sometimes life doesn't allow for second takes. This was my world for six magical and highly unusual weeks. I hope you enjoy listening.- Daniel Hope Artists Daniel Hope (violin), Christoph Israel (piano, work arranger), Till Brönner (trumpet), Joy Denalane (vocals), Max Raabe (vocals), Jacques Ammon (piano), Fritz Kreisler (work arranger), Paul Bateman (work arranger), Michael Metzler (percussion), Max Herre (vocals), Sebastian Knauer (piano), Matthias Goerne (baritone), Tamara Stefanovich (piano), Iris Berben (narrator), Aliya Vodovozova (flute) Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Jeep's Blues (Duke Ellington) [14:15] 8. High Life (take 2) (Trad) [06:00] On December 6 and 7, 1976, in a small jazz club called Stampen (The Pawn Shop) in Stockholm's Old Town, Swedish sound engineer Gert Palmcrantz recorded a group of leading Scandinavian jazzmen live, trying to get "the tight, harmonious sound of the records of my childhood." Conditions were less than ideal. A full house, a great deal of background noise. No rehearsals. No sound checks. The musicians just started playing with no one knowing what would be next on the agenda until reedman Arne Domnerus called it. The result has often been hailed as the best live jazz recording ever. Amazingly, for a small country such as Sweden, the record sold more than half a million copies and still sells, at a rate of around 4,000 copies annually. In the past thirty years it has been re-released in all manner of formats and become a cult album for Hi-Fi freaks, especially in South East Asia, where a Hong Kong audio magazine devoted five pages to an analysis of Palmcrantz's achievement. Now the icing on the cake: a special three-CD 30th anniversary edition of Jazz at the Pawnshop, with hybrid disks that play on ordinary CD, Stereo SACD and Surround SACD systems. It comes with previously unreleased material, a booklet in which a charmingly modest Palmcrantz very amusingly tells just how he did it. Plus a DVD, featuring interviews with Erstrand and Riedel, recorded in Stampen, with English subtitles. Sound aside, the music is an absolutely glorious mix that seamlessly knits Ellington with Armstrong, melancholic Swedish folk songs with bop, and two takes of African High Life thrown in for good measure. Domnerus is at the very height of his considerable powers on alto saxophone and clarinet. The highlights are a lovely, lyrical version of "Over The Rainbow" and his booting rendition of Parker's "Now's The Time," which follow one another on the second disc. Pianist Bengt Hallberg, usually an extremely delicate and very measured player, was obviously affected by the general ambience, and here and there cuts loose with awesome force. "Bengt went almost crazy on occasions," bassist Riedel recalls on the DVD. Erstrand, one of Europe's best on vibes, played just one night but added a light, airy feel. He rides high on up-tempo numbers like "Limehouse Blues," but also provides subtle underpinning on ballads including "I'm Confessin'" and "Lady Be Good." You hear the chink of glasses, the chime of the bell to acknowledge a tip, the burr of conversation. It all fits; that intimate club atmosphere that sparks jazz at its best. You feel as though you're there. Which is Palmcrantz's triumph, and why Jazz at the Pawnshop is likely to continue to fascinate both jazz and audio fans for a good many years to come. There is, though, a variation cycle lasting almost an hour on a simple theme by Anton Diabelli. This astonishing cycle takes the listener into such distant moods, that even after the first variation it doesn't matter what the theme is, it is all so unmistakably Beethoven. Also on this disc, two cycles of "simple" piano pieces entitled "Bagatelles". Small, unimportant things, trivialities, which make you think involuntarily of much later romantic composers. And finally, the usually so self-critical Beethoven allocated his penultimate opus number (op. 134) to a "simple" piano score of the "Große Fuge" op. 133! So how does all this fit together? Obviously, the scope of classical forms was too narrow for Beethoven. Did this apparent simplicity serve a wider purpose? The very last movement of the very last opus, the string quartet op. 135, is based on the text "Must it be? - It must be! " Was Beethoven in his last works pursuing an overall objective? Or did it all just happen like that? Find out now! You can find these last works for piano alongside each other on a double CD. Just listen to the first few seconds of the "Große Fuge" with Ljupka Hadzigeorgiewa and Evgeni Koroliov. Succumb to the charm and allure of these two musicians, who lead us selflessly and confidently through this perplexing hiatus in musical history. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Jitterbug Waltz Art Tatum was among the most extraordinary of all jazz musicians, a pianist with wondrous technique who could not only play ridiculously rapid lines with both hands (his 1933 solo version of "Tiger Rag" sounds as if there were three pianists jamming together) but was harmonically 30 years ahead of his time; all pianists have to deal to a certain extent with Tatum's innovations in order to be taken seriously. Able to play stride, swing, and boogie-woogie with speed and complexity that could only previously be imagined, Tatum's quick reflexes and boundless imagination kept his improvisations filled with fresh (and sometimes futuristic) ideas that put him way ahead of his contemporaries. Born nearly blind, Tatum gained some formal piano training at the Toledo School of Music but was largely self-taught. Although influenced a bit by Fats Waller and the semi-classical pianists of the 1920s, there is really no explanation for where Tatum gained his inspiration and ideas from. He first played professionally in Toledo in the mid-'20s and had a radio show during 1929-1930. In 1932 Tatum traveled with singer Adelaide Hall to New York and made his recording debut accompanying Hall (as one of two pianists). But for those who had never heard him in person, it was his solos of 1933 (including "Tiger Rag") that announced the arrival of a truly major talent. In the 1930s, Tatum spent periods working in Cleveland, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and (in 1938) England. Although he led a popular trio with guitarist Tiny Grimes (later Everett Barksdale) and bassist Slam Stewart in the mid-'40s, Tatum spent most of his life as a solo pianist who could always scare the competition. Some observers criticized him for having too much technique (is such a thing possible?), working out and then keeping the same arrangements for particular songs, and for using too many notes, but those minor reservations pale when compared to Tatum's reworkings of such tunes as "Yesterdays," "Begin the Beguine," and even "Humoresque." Although he was not a composer, Tatum's rearrangements of standards made even warhorses sound like new compositions. Art Tatum, who recorded for Decca throughout the 1930s and Capitol in the late '40s, starred at the Esquire Metropolitan Opera House concert of 1944 and appeared briefly in his only film in 1947, The Fabulous Dorseys (leading a jam session on a heated blues). He recorded extensively for Norman Granz near the end of his life in the 1950s, both solo and with all-star groups; all of the music has been reissued by Pablo on a six-CD box set. His premature death from uremia has not resulted in any loss of fame, for Art Tatum's recordings still have the ability to scare modern pianists. ~ Scott Yanow Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]
  15. Artist: Naretha Williams Title: Blak Mass Year Of Release: 2020 Label: Heavy Machinery Records - HEVMAC004 Genre: Abstract, Experimental, Industrial, Drone, Contemporary Quality: 16bit-44,1kHz FLAC Total Time: 32:54 Total Size: 158 mb Tracklist A1 - Paranormal Pipe Dream (04:49) A2 - Chaos Country (05:30) A3 - Servitor For The Stolen (05:54) B1 - Collective Consequences (04:24) B2 - Carnivahalla (02:22) B3 - Dark Hearth (04:48) B4 - Ghost Track (05:07) Heavy Machinery Records is proud to present BLAK MASS - the debut full length LP from Naretha Williams. Commissioned by The City Of Melbourne for a live performance in 2019, BLAK MASS sees Naretha combine the gargantuan Melbourne Town Hall Grand Organ with live electronics to realise her complex progressive compositions. BLAK MASS reflects on the city's jarring civic history and the impact of colonisation on its First Peoples and Land, through an experimental, site specific musical performance developed for the Melbourne Town Hall Grand Organ. Naretha Williams is a First Nations experimental interdisciplinary artist with a primary focus on music and audio arts practice. A Wiradjuri woman of mixed lineage, born and based in Melbourne on the Sovereign Land of the Kulin Nation, Victoria, Australia, Naretha's process-based work intersects installation and contemporary music, exploring themes around identity, place and the unseen. Ritual and esoteric practice underpins both process and presentation of her work. BLAK MASS is the second iteration of Naretha Williams' CRYPTEX composition project. CRYPTEX - Bio Templates & Ceremonial Frameworks for Contemporary Composition utilises the source code of the body by analysing DNA sequences to create mathematical templates to work with in a musical context. BLAK MASS considers the Grand Organ as a significant symbol of European domination and reaches deep in to the psyche of the instrument to create a haunting, avant-garde sound work. The title may indeed conjure pearl-clutching anxieties about the summoning of 'dark' forces and the opening of portals between forbidden realms. These concepts are central to Naretha William's stunning Grand Organ commission which is a direct confrontation with ideas of established power, conservative gatekeeping and cultural dominance in Australian society. "Under the control of Williams, the Town Hall's Grand Organ became something else, electric and unruly as the deep melodic sounds of the old instrument intersected with her vivid set. Her music was an act of cleansing, taming the instruments that attempted to obliterate blak culture. Her presence and dynamic sound demonstrated survival in an era of renewed blak confidence." The cast is a carefully selected mix of young and experienced Strauss specialists including Camilla Nylund (Feldmarschallin), Peter Rose (Baron Ochs), Paula Murrihy (Octavian) and Hanna-Elisabeth Muller (Sophie). The Dutch National Opera is the largest opera company in the Netherlands and is housed in Dutch National Opera & Ballet, in Amsterdam. Under the leadership of artistic director Pierre Audi and the managing director of Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Els van der Plas, DNO has grown into one of the most important and pioneering opera companies in Europe. 'Marc Albrecht, once again presented his platinum Strauss credentials... The Netherlands Philharmonic, playing with dreamlike ease, tugged at the heart with airborne woodwinds and shapely violin lines, stopping a hair's breadth away from full extravagance. This introspective restraint created a tenseness throughout, rendering the emotional climaxes all the more powerful.' - 5 stars, bachtrack.com (September 2015) Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Symphony No. 1 for Orchestra and Mezzo Soprano Selige Sehnsucht 05. Recorder concerto World Premiere recordings of a pair of orchestral works by leading Dutch composer Willem Jeths, featuring two world famous conductors - Edo de Waart and Markus Stenz - with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. Following his Symphony No 1, the virtuoso Erik Bosgraaf is the soloist in the Recorder Concerto. Jeths, born in 1959, had written an opera, three string quartets, eleven solo concertos and a large number of orchestral and chamber music works before attempting the most important genre of the orchestral repertoire. In fact, his is not a traditional symphony in the classical-romantic sense, but rather a piece with four movements themed around the cycle of life, death and transformation. Just under 45 minutes in length, the symphony consists of one single build-up of tension in which its musical and philosophical aspects - the opening and closing vocal movements incorporate poems by Goethe that revolve around the cyclic dimension of existence - are seen to be all interconnected. Before composing his Recorder Concerto for Erik Bosgraaf, Willem Jeths heard him play a number of different instuments, one of which was a 16th-century renaissance recorder by Silvestro Ganassi. "That instrument is more powerful than the more common baroque variant, so I composed my concerto specifically for the Ganassi recorder." As the composition progressed, Jeths was increasingly captivated by what he calls the 'essence of the instrument': "To me, the sound of the recorder represents innocence and fragile purity. I had to give the soloist enough scope to let him put these qualities across to the best possible effect.(to) emerge in the limelight." Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Since he won the Echo Klassik Award for his EMI debut album in 2006, Linus Roth has made a name for himself both as one of the most interesting violinists of his generation and as a champion of wrongly forgotten works and composers. One such is Mieczyslaw Weinberg, a friend of Shostakovich (whose music also appears here with a transcription of his Three Fantastic Dances). Roth is perhaps the leading performer of Weinberg's music currently; and his interest in the composer led in 2015 to the formation of the International Mieczyslaw Weinberg Society. Weinberg's three unaccompanied violin sonatas are passionate works dating from 1964, 1967 and 1978. The Third Sonata, Op.123, is the most challenging and important: one continuous movement lasting nearly half an hour, with many technical difficulties. This sonata is dedicated to the memory of his father Shmuil Weinberg, who was a composer and conductor at the Yiddish theatre in Kishinev. Given that Weinberg knew his father had been murdered in the Holocaust, the sonata isn't easy listening but it's hugely rewarding. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Allegro con spirito 13. 6 German Dances, K. 509 - Six German Dances, K. 509 14. 6 German Dances, K. 571 - Six German Dances, K. 571 A first international CD issue for two contrasting albums of light-orchestral Mozart from Joseph Keilberth and Thurston Dart. The two albums reissued here exemplify the postwar revolution of Classical-era performance styles. Having begun to make records in 1938, the L'Oiseau-Lyre label worked in the vanguard of the period-performance movement, yet in 1951 the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and it's long-time principal conductor Joseph Keilberth were engaged to record the Symphony KV 201 and the two sets of German Dances. They did so in Paris, the day after giving a concert in the Salle Pleyel to open a tour of France, Spain and Portugal. The sessions prompted a laconic diary reflection from Keilberth - 'How hard it is to stick to a really secure 3/4 pulse' - but the authors of The Record Guide observed an unexpected lightness of touch about the results. L'Oiseau-Lyre's founder Louise Dyer continued, however, to engage artists who were scholars as much as musicians - none more eminent than Thurston Dart, who had produced a scholarly edition of Couperin's keyboard works on which much of the label's reputation was founded, and who directed his own ensembles such as the Philomusica of London with a sure and lively touch. This recording of Eine kleine Nachtmusik was the first - and still one of the only - to insert a replacement for the work's missing first minuet- in this case, Dart's own orchestration of a movement from a piano sonata, following a suggestion made by Alfred Einstein. It was also the first album of Mozart's orchestral music where the instrumentalists used 'period' bows, lighter and differently balanced, lending a natural shapeliness to the phrases. 20. Artist: Nikolaj Znaider Title: Brahms, Korngold: Violin Concertos Year Of Release: 2009 Label: RCA Red Seal Genre: Classical Quality: FLAC (image+.cue, scans) Total Time: 67:37 Total Size: 336 Mb Tracklist: Johannes Brahms - Violin Concerto In D Major, Op 77 (41:50) 1. Allegro Ma Non Troppo 23:57 2. Adagio 9:16 3. Allegro Giocoso, Ma Non Troppo 8:37 Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Violin Concerto In D Major, Op. 35 (25:37) 4. I. Moderato Nobile 9:19 5. II. Romance 8:47 6. III. Finale 7:31 Performers: Nikolaj Znaider - violin Wiener Philharmoniker Valery Gergiev - conductor Nikolaj Znaider has a lovely, singing tone and prefers long-breathed, legato phrasing even in virtuoso passage-work. His ability to play quick passages in double-stops so sweetly, and to phrase them as genuine melodies, makes music out of long passages in the Korngold that sometimes comes across as empty virtuosity. Consider the long first-movement cadenza, or the opening measures of the finale; combined with Gergiev's warmly flexible accompaniment, the result is one of the finest recordings of the Korngold currently available, no doubt about it. The same qualities that work so well in the Korngold prove nearly lethal in the Brahms. For some reason, tempos have been slowing down in this piece over the past few decades. Znaider takes almost 24 minutes over the first movement; compare this to Milstein (19) or Oistrakh (22, with Klemperer no less). But the difference has less to with tempo than with firmness of rhythm. Znaider's persistent smoothness, so effective in preventing that "hack and chop" sound in Korngold, turns Brahms bland. The slow movement is beautiful, but the finale comes off as much slower than it really is owing to a terminal lack of incisiveness. So this is worth hearing for the Korngold, but as a total offering this glass is only half full. Download links: [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

Hundrad Hardingtonar: Folgafodne fortél ingjenting Do the best classical works have anything to gain from transcription to the organ? What new dimensions can be explored? Nils Henrik Asheim attempts to answer these questions and more by transferring both Edvard Grieg's 'Ballade' and Geirr Tveitt's 'Hundrad Hardingtonar' to the concert organ's color palette. This project has become one that should garner considerable interest! The 'Ballade' is Grieg?s greatest work for solo piano. Through a magnificent, epic range of variations over a Norwegian folk song, he wrote away his grief over the loss of his parents, his marital problems, and his artistic stagnation. Asheim's organ edition closely follows these restless mood changes, from the lyrical to the triumphant. Geir Tveitt hit a gold mine when he combined folk tunes from Hardanger with his unique sense of harmony and orchestration. Asheim took inspiration from the lush spectrum of colors of the Hundrad Hardingtonar version for orchestra and pulled out the organ?s entire stock of creative sound combinations for the task. This selection counts 18 tunes, from the poignant 'Vélkomne med Æra' to the hypnotic 'Hardingøl' to the mystical 'Folgafodne fortél ingjenting.' After five years, Asheim believes that the instrument of the house is ripe for its first CD release. The 65-stop concert organ from Ryde & Berg in Fredrikstad has been praised for its organic, warm sound and is frequently used by performers from home and abroad.
