While Garcia celebrated many new years on stage with the Grateful Dead, this performance holds the distinction as the Jerry Garcia Band's lone New Year's Eve appearance. Fresh off a Winter tour which yielded the transcendent performances captured on 2009's Let It Rock live release, Garcia is joined for this performance by mainstay John Kahn on bass, Sly and the Family Stone drummer Greg Errico and legendary rock pianist Nicky Hopkins. Recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson, the original master reels were only recently re-discovered, along with a few other reels dubbed the "Houseboat Tapes", and have been remastered for this release. It was the year of this recording that Donna Jean and Keith Godchaux first joined up with the Jerry Garcia Band. Their addition, along with Ron Tutt on drums and bassist John Kahn, helped form what would be one of the most durable lineups of the Garcia Band. In fact, earlier that year Garcia commented "I haven't been as happy with any little performing group since Old And In The Way in terms of feeling 'this is really harmonious, this is what I want to hear.'" That harmonious vibe is especially present as well. Throughout the course of the evening, the band deftly melds gospel, rock, soul, and reggae to form their quintessential mid-70's sound. As one astute critic pointed out, "More than any other Garcia band this one allows him room to run through all his guitar styles, often within a single song." From the opening notes of "The Way You Do The Things You Do", the band lock into a relaxed, but confident groove with Kahn & Tutt's deep pocket providing the foundation for Jerry & Keith's melodic exploration rounded out by Donna Jean's soulful harmonies. The Hunter/Garcia penned "Mission in the Rain" and Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" are particularly poignant and soulful while songs like "Midnight Moonlight", "Tore Up Over You" and "Ride Mighty High" provide the sparks bringing balance to the evening. A 22+ minute "Don't Let Go" stands out not only for its length, but for its exercise in dynamics which further showcases Garcia's comfort not only with the band, but the freedom found in playing smaller rooms tailor-made for they type of music he was looking to create. A Day in the Life Drummer Skip Prokop formed Lighthouse in 1968 and began adding members soon after: guitarist Ralph Cole (whom Prokop had played with in the Paupers), Grant Fullerton, Pinky Dauvin, saxophonist Howard Shore, cellist Dick Armin, violinist Don DiNovo, keyboard player Paul Hoffert, saxophonist Keith Jollimore, vocalist Bob McBride, trumpeter Peter Pantaluk, trombonist Larry Smith and bassist Louis Yackniw. The band released two singles on RCA in 1970 and played at the Newport and Monterey Jazz Festivals and the Isle of Wight Festival, though they had turned down Woodstock. In late 1970, GRT released Lighthouse's debut album, Peacing It All Together. 1971 brought One Fine Morning and Thoughts of Movin' On, and in 1972, the band released Lighthouse Live! and Sunny Days. The band lost members, beginning in 1973 when Paul Hoffert left, followed by Bob McBride and Skip Prokop in 1974; the group eventually disbanded in 1976. Lighthouse had released Can You Feel It (1973) and Good Day (1974), and in 1975, The Best of Lighthouse appeared. Original members re-formed for live shows in 1982 and 1993, and another greatest hits album, The Best of Lighthouse -- Sunny Days Again, was issued in 1989. Postcards from Heaven followed in 1998. Both Bob McBride and Skip Prokop had somewhat successful solo careers. Sadly, Bob McBride lost his battle with substance abuse February 20, 1998. He was 51. Combining field recordings from Port Talbot Steelworks, self built electro acoustic instruments and vocals drawn from alchemical texts and renaissance polyphony, The Funnel is chamber-musique-concrète for the wondering troubadour of the 21st century. "Passport to an OBSCENELY DYNAMIC, contemplative dimension - "The Funnel" is a set of ancient imaginations in a stranglehold of electronics and steel factory atmosfears, originally composed for Radiophrenia by Wojciech Rusin and now gloriously pressed and presented by Glasgow based Akashic Records. Equipped with some adapted instruments and occultist readings (decent dose of RATHER GLOOMY Greek-Egyptian philosophy in there too) Rusin composes and engineers an unpredictably celestial moving picture for the ear - the auto-tuned intro "Paolo's Dream" and the bellowing baritones of "Salvation" diffusing into a solemn soul-purging of post-pythagorean(?) electro-organums. "Transmutation" sounds like a petri dish of duplicating cells, contorted beauty with strings soaring like some sorta solar wind, the internalised ecstasy fading into the ambient clatter and percussion of "Cyclops". The second album (CD and LP) by Swedish progressive jazzrockers HOOFFOOT mixes spontaneity with carefully crafted themes and the music falls into place as natural and prophetic as the album title; "THE LIGHTS IN THE AISLE WILL GUIDE YOU". Although not a concept album as such, maybe the four instrumental compositions on this album are all about navigating a world in flux? There is definitely a sense of constant change and movement in the music. Just like a spy novel from 1976-1979 you want to find out where it is all heading. Why those specific years? Read more below to find out. Bengt Wahlgren, keyboardist in HOOFFOOT, was looking for an image with connection to HOOFFOOT's home town Malmö to use as an album cover. One day he stumbled upon an oil painting, in a style referred to as super-realism, portraying a street only one block away from his home. The painting, "Nattljus vid Källargatan Kirseberg" took three years (1976-1979) to complete for Malmö artist Thomas Strömdahl and fitted perfectly for the mood - "Malmö noir"- of the new album! The next idea was less realistic than the painting, "Hey, let's re-stage this set including the original car for a photo shoot with the HOOFFOOT members included" Bengt managed to find Thomas Strömdahl, who gave his approval for using the painting as album cover. After listening to early mixes of the new HOFFOOT album, Thomas stated that it reminded him very much of the type of music he listened to at the time of the painting's creation; Can, Amon Düül and Tangerine Dream. What are the odds? The next step was trying to track down the car. Bass player Pär Hallgren succeeded in finding the current owner who explained that the car was parked in an old barn in the countryside. (Strangely enough, very close to the location of the studio where HOOFFOOT recorded their debut album.) Unfortunately, the car was in so poor condition that it could not be transported and used for the photo shoot, Fortunately, the owner had a nearly identical "spare car". The car was transported from the barn and placed on the same spot in the street of Malmö where it´s predecessor stood some 43 years ago. Photographer Jörgen Persson worked with the band with staging and photography and the resulting photo was used for the inner sleeve of the new HOOFFOOT album released in December 2019. For everybody involved, this is so much more than a photo. It is a great story, a process, a reminder that it is worth investing time and effort into something if you know what you want to achieve, regardless of whether it is music or an oil painting. Le fait que l'ouvrage ait été enregistré en direct rajoute à l'excitation de la chose, que ce soit pour les airs autant que pour les nombreux numéros purement instrumentaux - qui en cette année 1686, mais aussi sans doute lors des nombreuses reprises de l'œuvre au cours des décennies suivantes, servaient de support à des intermèdes dansés. Jusques et y compris en 1753, lorsque Rousseau traîna Armide dans la boue et que Rameau en prit la défense, le public accourait pour écouter un opéra ancien ! N'hésitez pas à écouter cette superbe interprétation, elle vous raccommodera sans nul doute avec Lully qui, il est vrai, a parfois été présenté de manière un peu râpeuse par certains orchestres et chanteurs ces dernières décennies ; Rousset et son équipe, au contraire, cherchent constamment à en souligner les beautés mélodiques et harmoniques. That said, these are not Monk's complete recordings for Blue Note, which exist in two separate boxes from the label and the long out of print Mosaic imprint. Nonetheless, for anyone deeply interested in the composer and pianist's process, these sessions showcase Monk in commanding company as a bandleader. Other notables who appear here are jazz greats Art Blakey, Max Roach, Shadow Wilson, Idrees Sulieman, Sahib Shihab, Lucky Thompson, and Lou Donaldson, to name just a few. Cale's albums usually sound interchangeable, and his 12th release, Guitar Man, is no exception. Although he has recorded Guitar Man as a one-man band effort, it sounds remarkably relaxed and laid-back, like it was made with a seasoned bar band. That doesn't mean there's much excitement on the album, but Cale's music has never been about excitement -- it's more about laying back and letting the music flow. Of course, that approach results in remarkably uneven records, and Guitar Man is no exception. There's a handful of very good songs, but there's nothing on the level of his previous classics.
