Because of his osteogenesis imperfecta, which caused him to stop growing at three feet tall, Petrucciani knew he was on borrowed time; he never let it stop him yet he did work at a more feverish pace than most in order to make his mark. Prolific and far-reaching artistically, he was a remarkable artist and human being with seemingly limitless ideas to draw from had he survived a while longer there's no telling where this piano virtuoso (whose arms were so short that reaching all of the keys was a chore) might have gone. In the end though, it's his considerable recorded body of work that we have to go on, and it transcends his personal story. This ten-CD/two-DVD box set celebrates the tail-end of that journey. Petrucciani cut his earliest albums for the French Owl label, then recorded for Blue Note before coming to Dreyfus in 1994. The box contains all of his work as leader or co-leader for Dreyfus, beginning with that year's Marvellous, a rich set that found the pianist in the company of bassist Dave Holland and drum legend Tony Williams. Petrucciani never had trouble attracting fine collaborators, a fact borne out by 1996's Flamingo, co-billed with violinist Stéphane Grappelli and also featuring drummer Roy Haynes and bassist George Mraz; 2003's Dreyfus Night in Paris, with Marcus Miller, Biréli Lagrène, Lenny White, and Kenny Garrett; and 2001's Conversation, a duet with guitarist Tony Petrucciani, the pianist's father. Petrucciani was just as effective in a solo setting, however, and the double-disc, 1997 Piano Solo: The Complete Concert in Germany is rich, consistently inspired and full of surprises. Dans les années 1950 il s'intéresse à la guitare électrique, dont le son l'attire. Il abandonne ses études entreprise en sciences et devient musicien professionnel à l'âge de dix-neuf ans. En 1956, Ebo Taylor se lance dans la musique et commence par rayonner dans le Highlife, genre qui fait déjà l'unanimité dans l'Afrique anglophone dans les années post-indépendance, dont il va par la suite métisser avec les sonorités venues d'Amérique, que ce soit du Nord ou Latine, comme le jazz, funk ou encore calypso. Un équivalent ghanéen de Fela Kuti, dont il croise notamment la route à Londres dans les années 1960. Moins bien distribués que ceux du légendaire roi nigérian de l'afrobeat, ses disques des années 1970, essentiels, sont redécouverts en Europe dans les années 20002. Après s'être produit au Ghana, au Nigéria, en Côte d'Ivoire, au Togo ou au Burkina Faso avec le groupe de highlife Stargazers Band, après avoir perfectionné sa technique guitaristique au sein du Broadway Dance Band, Ebo Taylor se rend en Angleterre en 1962 pour étudier la composition et l'art d'arranger à la Eric Guilder School of Music. Il y rencontre et devient ami avec le nigérien Fela Kuti, futur créateur de la musique « afrobreat ». Tous deux s'intéressent de très près à la musique de Miles Davis, Charlie Parker et John Coltrane. Taylor s'intéresse aussi aux guitaristes de jazz américains tels que Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Georges Benson. Après son retour au Ghana en 1965, Taylor est devenu un arrangeur et producteur interne pour des labels tels qu'Essiebons, travaillant avec d'autres stars ghanéennes majeures, dont C.K. Mann et Pat Thomas. Il était payé pour écrire pour eux, jouer de la guitare lors de sessions et superviser des enregistrements. Joni Mitchell - It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (Demo) For starters, hunters should not get their hopes up about any unreleased material on this box set -- there are exactly three cuts, two are unfinished demo versions of songs already on their respective albums -- "Two Grey Rooms" and "Good Friends" -- as well as an unreleased cover version of Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue." But that's fine, just fine. The bottom line is that these records haven't been available in some time due to the profound folly of the accountants who run the Geffen imprint who wouldn't know art if it were hanging in their living rooms. The box is stunning, gorgeous even in its earth-tone glory with a brilliant inset photograph by former husband and producer Larry Klein. There are poignant photos, the albums in their original sleeves, a completely searing unapologetic set of liner notes from Mitchell, reproductions of paintings, and more. Mitchell's comments, which introduce many of the songs here, are priceless. These and the liner notes are almost worth the price of the box. The only design problem seems to be that the booklet falls apart a bit from its stitching, but that's not really a big deal. However, there is the music to contend with. When Mitchell entered the '80s with Wild Things Run Fast, her first studio album of the decade coming off the Mingus and the transcendent Shadows And Light tour. Lyrically, Mitchell met the challenge head on, and musically, she did as she always did: followed her own Muse deeper into the realms of jazz and classic American pop. She collaborated with Larry Klein for the first time -- as she has ever since -- and began using small core bands with Klein's bass as an anchor and numerous guests including Wayne Shorter, Lionel Ritchie, Brenda Russell, Alex Acuña; even Grasshopper from Mercury Rev made an appearance on Night Ride Home. On this box it becomes obvious that Wild Things Run Fast set a template for four very different, yet linked, recordings. With its jazzy edges and its liberal use of early rock and roll and classic R&B (at one point in "Chinese Laundry" Mitchell does a very moving rendition of "Unchained Melody," and at another covers Leiber and Stoller's "You're So Square"). Critics were downright hostile to Dog Eat Dog, from the cover on in to the music. Given its dark meditations on the era, it's use of Thomas Dolby and technology, it flew in the face of '80s-styled simple, shiny rock, and took to task both the rampant materialism of the age, and its complete abandonment of human concerns for commerce and cultural iconography. It also laughed at the forced simplicity of popular music at the time with a rampant sophistication and cool. Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm, with its Native American themes and mystical jazz tropes, is simply a brilliant recording that was received with kindness, and even some understanding by critics, but it sold miserably even though its guests reflected a who's who of the MTV era: Peter Gabriel, Billy Idol, Don Henley, Tom Petty, and Wendy and Lisa (from Prince's band). Night Ride Home garnered decent reviews as well; it featured a stripped down, more acoustic sound, and is one of the most lyrically brilliant and ambitious of Mitchell's many albums. Here was a long reflection on endings, dark ambiguities, and the willingness to stay inside a place that offers no certainty in order to live one's way into an answer. Tracks like "The Windfall," "Slouching Toward Bethlehem," "Cherokee Louise," and "Come In From The Cold," offer a vision of steadfastness in dark and wavering trials of the soul. Her version of Dylan's "Baby Blue" here is a real bonus; it's a revelatory reading of a monolithic song. Revealing her to still be full of the trickster's promise and the visionary's unwavering gaze into the future, this is a box set worthy of Mitchell's contribution. In the exterior, where Saharan rock has become one of the continents biggest musical exports, he's earned a name for himself with his guitar moves. Mdou shreds with a relentless and frenetic energy that puts his contemporaries to shame. Mdou Moctar hails from a small village in central Niger in a remote region steeped in religious tradition. Growing up in an area where secular music was all but prohibited, he taught himself to play on a homemade guitar cobbled together out of wood. It was years before he found a "real" guitar and taught himself to play in secret. His immediately became a star amongst the village youth. In a surprising turn, his songs began to win over local religious leaders with their lyrics of respect, honor, and tradition. In 2008, Mdou traveled to Nigeria to record his debut album of spacey autotune, drum machine, and synthesizer. The album became a viral hit on the mp3 networks of West Africa, and was later released on the compilation "Music from Saharan Cellphones." In 2013, he released "Afelan," compiled from field recordings of his performances recorded in his village. Then he shifted gears, producing and starring the first Tuareg language film, a remake of Prince's Purple Rain ("Rain the Color Blue with a Little Red in it"). Finally, in 2017, he created a solo folk album, "Sousoume Tamachek," a mellow blissed out recording evoking the calm desert soundscape. Without a band present, he played every instrument on the record. "I am a very curious person and I want to push Tuareg music far," he says. His new album, "Ilana" is his most ambitious to date - taking the tradition into hyperdrive, pushing Tuareg guitar into an ever louder and blistering direction. In contrast to the polished style of the typical "world music" fare, Mdou trades in unrelenting grit and has no qualms about going full shred. From the spaghetti western licks of "Tarhatazed," the raw wedding burner "Ilana," to the atmospheric Julie Cruise-ish ballad "Tumastin," Mdou's new album seems at home amongst some of the great seminal Western records. But Mdou disagrees with the classification. Mdou grew up listening to the Tuareg guitar greats, and it was only in the past few years on tour that he was introduced to the genre. "I don't know what rock is exactly, I have no idea," he says, I only know how to play in my style." As Mdou travels the world, he divides his time between two places, alternating from lavish weddings in Agadez to sold out concerts in Berlin nightclubs. It offers a unique perspective, but also means that he needs to address different audiences. At home, his compositions send a message to his people. Abroad, his music is an opportunity to be heard and represent his people on a world stage. His music has been featured in the BBC, The Guardian, Pitchfork, New Yorker, New York Times, L.A.
