Armide, LWV 71, Acte cinquième, scène V: Prélude (Live) Ah, voilà un enregistrement vraiment superbe : Armide de Lully, avec les Talens lyriques de Christophe Rousset, enregistré en concert public dans la salle Boulez (aimait-il Lully ? hmmm.) de la Philharmonie de Paris, avec dans le rôle-titre l'excellentissime soprano française Marie-Adeline Henry, voix somptueuse, élocution exemplaire, caractérisation des plus fines. Le fait que l'ouvrage ait été enregistré en direct rajoute à l'excitation de la chose, que ce soit pour les airs autant que pour les nombreux numéros purement instrumentaux - qui en cette année 1686, mais aussi sans doute lors des nombreuses reprises de l'œuvre au cours des décennies suivantes, servaient de support à des intermèdes dansés. Jusques et y compris en 1753, lorsque Rousseau traîna Armide dans la boue et que Rameau en prit la défense, le public accourait pour écouter un opéra ancien ! N'hésitez pas à écouter cette superbe interprétation, elle vous raccommodera sans nul doute avec Lully qui, il est vrai, a parfois été présenté de manière un peu râpeuse par certains orchestres et chanteurs ces dernières décennies ; Rousset et son équipe, au contraire, cherchent constamment à en souligner les beautés mélodiques et harmoniques. As he later emphasised, his modernization "did not change a single one of Mozart's notes", but constituted "a way of showing admiration for an old master." Grieg also intended the pieces for a duo of student at teacher; here the performers are a pianist of exceptional distinction and her legendary mentor: Elisabeth Leonskaja and Sviatoslav Richter. Now this really is something to tickle the fancy of transcription-fanciers. When Grieg added an accompaniment for a second piano to Mozart's keyboard sonatas, he did it primarily with teaching in mind. It was apparently common practice in the 1880s for teachers to accompany their pupils on a second piano (my own teacher was still perpetuating the custom 80 years on). But the resulting compositions soon found their way into the concert-hall where, according to Grieg, "the whole thing sounded surprisingly good". And so it does today. In trying to "impart to several of Mozart's sonatas a tonal effect appealing to our modern ears" Grieg left a telling little document or two on just what those late nineteenth-century Norwegian ears expected. If the C major 'Sonata facile' seems to sit even more sedately in the drawing-room, then it soon becomes clear that the light glinting through its windows is not a million miles away from that bouncing off the fjord waters which lap around Troldhaugen. The C minor Fantasia becomes a dark salon melodrama (shades of Bergljot) which moves from conversation with not a little chromatic prevarication to the hanging of whimsical icicles of figuration around the major-key section. Gently exuberant harmonies cross-weave their way through the sparse trio-sonata-like textures of the opening F major before a trotting bass makes a high-stepping mountain horse of the rondo-finale. These are Mozart-Kugeln with a bonne bouche or two of the finest Gravadlax on the side. And if these fond tributes are good enough for Elisabeth Leonskaja and Sviatoslav Richter, who could resist tasting them? Liebe Schwalbe, kleine Schwalbe This is the (presumably) last album in a remarkably fine series of recordings of Brahms's works for solo voices. First came nine albums of the solo songs, with soprano Juliane Banse and baritone Andreas Schmidt, beautifully sung and well thought out. This was followed by the complete folksong arrangements, with Schmidt and mezzo Iris Vermillion. Last came the present album of the complete duets and quartets, featuring the three earlier singers along with mezzo Ingeborg Danz and tenors Christoph Prégardien and Marcus Ullmann. The best known and most recorded works are the two sets of Liebeslieder Waltzes; these performances are beautifully sung and feature an uncommon attention to dynamics, phrasing, and subtle tempo variations. The other works are similarly well done. But perhaps the real hero of these albums is pianist Helmut Deutsch, who has quietly become one of the finest song accompanists around. His technical facility, beautiful sound, and thorough sympathy with his singers are outstanding. My only slight quibble is in the solo songs. Banse takes on the songs on female texts and Schmidt those on male texts. But many of the male songs were written for high voice, i.e., tenor, and downward transposition is often problematic in terms of piano texture. Deutsch does his best to keep the piano parts transparent, but Brahms often doesn't make it easy. But I strongly recommend all of these recordings. Thanks to Brahms's well-known self criticism, he almost never published a weak song, and there are innumerable unknown gems to be found. Full texts and translations, and good notes.
