  1. Artist: Autechre Title: Amber Year Of Release: 1994/2019 Label: Warp Records Genre: Abstract, IDM, Ambient Quality: 320 kbps / FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 01:14:28 Total Size: 106.3 MB / 418,89 MB Tracklist: [06:05] 01. Autechre - Teartear AllMusic Review by Ned Raggett In small but noticeable ways on this, their sophomore release, Autechre begin to break from the clean, if at times obvious, artistic techno from their debut record, and reach instead toward something far more distinct. Sean Booth and Rob Brown weren't quite there yet, but their self-production is even more accomplished than before, and their instincts to steer away from overly polite electronic dance music come ever more to the fore at various points throughout Amber. "Foil" begins the album with a distinctly spooky feel to it, with droning keyboards playing out over a series of spare percussion patterns; the heavy echo and crumbling, lo-fi bass feel of the track reduces its straightforward danceability, creating an ominous introduction to the album. "Silverside" at once strips things down to a more minimal approach. A string synth section plays out over first gently thudding then more pounding beats. Then a more off-kilter section with distorted vocal samples and sounds provides part of the melodic accompaniment and rhythm. "Glitch" has a nice roiling rumble to it; it isn't as fragmented as later releases, but veers a little more closely to the edge in comparison to earlier songs. "Piezo" is also worth noting, with uplifting synths balancing out a very quirky, almost intrusive series of rhythms, while "Yulquen" eschews beats entirely for a slightly disturbing though still beautiful track which rivals prime Aphex Twin. For all this, Amber does suffer a similarity to Incunabula, in that a couple of tracks could be removed with no problem, while tracks like "Montreal" and "Slip" continue the basic Incunabula formula without noticeable change. Even so, things are clearly starting to gel a little more here than on previous releases; the great leap forward becomes all the more logical in retrospect. 2. Artist: Autechre Title: LP5 Year Of Release: 1998/2019 Label: Warp Records Genre: Abstract, IDM, Experimental Quality: 320 kbps / FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 01:16:20 Total Size: 372,87 MB Tracklist: [08:39] 01. Autechre - Drane2 AllMusic Review by Greg Prato Autechre create a fascinating sonic world on their fifth album release, where electronic pulses and blips are used to create fantastic textural waves. Members Sean Booth and Rob Brown prove they've become masters of programming throughout, issuing a more than suitable follow-up to their critically praised 1995 release, Tri Repetae++ (1997's Chiastic Slide wasn't considered a true follow-up by the band). Although it may be hard to take for those uninitiated into Autechre's unique style (it's hard to detect melodies initially), you'll discover something new with each repeated listen. Since all the songs are cut from the same sonic cloth, the album is best when listened to in its entirety, but the tracks "Acroyear2," "Rae," and "Fold4, Wrap5" are definite highlights. Although not for everyone, LP5 should be admired, since it's not comparable to anything past or present. Uncompromisingly cutting-edge. 3. Artist: Seefeel Title: Succour Year Of Release: 1995/2019 Label: Warp Records Genre: Techno, IDM, Experimental, Ambient Quality: 320 kbps / FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 01:01:54 Total Size: 142.5 MB / 275,71 MB Tracklist: [5:52] 01. Seefeel - Meol [7:29] 02. Seefeel - Extract [6:04] 03. Seefeel - When Face Was Face [5:53] 04. Seefeel - Fracture [6:00] 05. Seefeel - Gatha [6:09] 06. Seefeel - Ruby-Ha [6:30] 07. Seefeel - Rupt [4:26] 08. Seefeel - Vex [5:40] 09. Seefeel - Cut [7:52] 10. Seefeel - Utreat AllMusic Review by Glenn Swan There are those typically Seefeel-ish moments in Succour -- the looping of heavily treated sounds, vocals, keyboards, and guitar feedback that either transcend the clichés of electronica or wish it had a little more of it. Admittedly, Mark Clifford, Darren Seymour, Sarah Peacock, and Justin Fletcher do not want to be Moby or Underworld or anyone like that -- their guitar roots pointed them toward moody ambience and experimentation rather than the dance clubs. To this end they have become a respectable oddity -- prog-rock disguised as ambient psuedo-trance. By the time we reach them at this album, there are a couple rough spots, as they were supposedly having band problems at the time. Tracks like "Extract" repeat its key phrase tiredly for up to seven minutes, and frequently Clifford and Fletcher run to their signature tin-can drum samples and ambient clang of pipes in an attempt to keep other tracks afloat (like the somewhat unsurprising "Rupt" and "Cut"). Even more percussively obnoxious is "Vex" (a perfect title, under the circumstances), but it's the first time that listeners might recognize Seymour's bass amongst all the heavy treatments (and that's near the end of the album). What redeems Succour is a half-dozen other tracks, like the edgy polyrhythms and watery ambience of "When Face Was Face," replete with steady clangs and layered vocal lilts, making the whole production like a Javanese gamelan in space. "Fracture" follows next, a stark anthem with almost atypical and crunchy drums like a duet of rusted gasoline barrels, surrounded by guitar feedback and echoing vocals. "Ruby-Ha," though about as repetitive as "Extract," manages a little variation with the tattered ribbons of Peacock's voice (without whom neither the track nor the album would fare as well), sort of like a nursery-school lullaby long forgotten, played back on a pocket TV. "Gatha" comes off like a track from MAIN, with its needling guitar ripples, industrial static, and cavernous growls, though a bit heavy-handed on the bass drum (Indian tribes come to mind). Without the drum, perhaps there would be a taste of something rather refreshing in its minimalism. "Cut" has all the trappings of the weaker songs, but fares better because of the "dubby" bassline and somewhat more soulful rhythm track. "Utreat" closes out the disc beautifully, with a minimal call-and-response loop between electric piano and bass, peppered with next-door vocals and keyboard vapors. This track alone makes up for a third of the albums shortcomings. Overall, this is perhaps the bleakest album from Seefeel (their final for Warp records), but few do it as well. 4. Artist: Autechre Title: Tri Repetae Year Of Release: 1995/2019 Label: Warp Records Genre: Abstract, IDM, Ambient Quality: 320 kbps / FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 01:12:34 Total Size: 82.8 MB / 426,61 MB Tracklist: [06:40] 01. Autechre - C/Pach [05:50] 08. Autechre - Gnit [07:33] 09. Autechre - Overand [10:08] 10. Autechre - Rsdio AllMusic Review by Ned Raggett Starting with the snarling, slow machine-funk of "Dael," Tri Repetae fully confirms Autechre's evolution into electronic noise kings. If not as immediately experimental as the fractured work by the likes of Merzbow, Tri Repetae expertly harnesses the need for a beat to perfectly balance out the resolutely fierce, crunching samples and busy arrangements, turning from being inspired by Aphex Twin to being equally inspiring in itself. "Rotar" does a particularly fine job on this front, with high-pitched sounds against low, distorted bass blasts -- and this only forms part of the percussion arrangement. The basic combination of soft melody and harsh beats are here as well, coming fully to the fore and resulting in such fine songs as the synth-string/organ wheeze laden "Leterel" and the quirky, sweet "Gnit." Nearly every track has a particular edge or element to it, making it eminently listenable and distinct. "Stud," for all of its macho connotations, actually takes a gentler path than most of the album's tunes, with a flowing synth wash at the center of a stripped-down but sharp digital-drum punch; by the end of the song, the synth loops float freely in an uneasy, ambient wave. With the drowsy pulse of "Overand" and the echoing beats of "Radio" (perhaps not so ironically, the most straightforward of the album's songs) to close things out, Tri Repetae stands as a varied, accomplished album, clear evidence of Autechre's unique genius around sound. American releases included a bonus disc compiling the Anvil Vapre and Garbage EPs. Squarepusher - Varkatope [4:49] 07. Squarepusher - Gong Acid AllMusic Review by John Bush Though listeners may have expected an EP of B-sides hot on the heels of the last Squarepusher full-length, Tom Jenkinson appeared to have already moved on with this "mini-album." It has a similar feel (read: tin-can production) to Music Is Rotted One Note, but few of these tracks have the short-shrift sound of your average outtakes. The opener, "Iambic 5 Poetry," is much more inclined to melody and atmosphere, with cascading dub effects hitting off the beat and echoing low into the mix. The EP is definitely less obsessed with '70s fusion and more squarely experimental, akin to the quasi-single "My Sound" from Music Is Rotted One Note. Overall, Budakhan Mindphone breaks the bounds of fan-only singles and earns respect on its own worth. Squarepusher - Last Ap Roach AllMusic Review by Greg Prato The one-man drum'n'bass outfit Squarepusher (aka Tom Jenkinson) treads upon more unpredictable terrain on Music Is Rotted One Note. Although the album still contains elements of his usual drum'n'bass sound, this is by and large a jazz/fusion affair. Jenkinson does a masterful job playing all the instruments live and by himself, and perfectly re-creates the funky atmosphere of such early-'70s Miles Davis classics as Get Up With It and On the Corner. Jenkinson's performances throughout the disc are both flawless and inspired -- he obviously realized that if he were to pay tribute to Miles, nothing but the best would do. Davis' spirit lives on in such tracks as "Don't Go Plastic," "Dust Switch," "137 (Rinse)," and "Theme From Vertical Hold," while "My Sound" perfectly captures the essence of Miles' calming and reflective compositions. But don't be misled; this is not a by-the-numbers rip-off of Miles Davis. Jenkinson updates these familiar sounds with '90s recording techniques and injects enough of his own style into the mix to keep it recognizable. Miles would be proud. The Black Dog - Chesh AllMusic Review by Ned Raggett The last release under the group name before the trio splintered, Spanners is a great full-packed CD of modern electronic music, the band drawing on everything from dub to avant-garde experimentalism to create a varied, intoxicating collection. Funk samples are twisted and played with rather than lovingly reused, lyrics eschewed for obscure or unintelligible samples at most, generally straightforward dancefloor tracks still sound slightly hesitant or off. Even from the first song, "Raxmus," it's not too surprising that this appeared on Warp Records; the blend of shuffling yet crisp beat, ambient tones, and other sonic touches and tweaks practically could have been tailormade as a calling card for the label. Certainly, there's a healthy sense of playfulness and obscurity that won't surprise fans of labelmate Aphex Twin, neither will song titles like "Psil-Coysin" and "Nommo." The highlights are many, most often achieving a solid combination of dancefloor friendliness and unexpected sonic trickery. "Chase the Manhattan" may have a cringeworthy pun of a title, but the brisk funk/world percussion beat, soothing synth washes, and distorted electronic bass stabs all come together wonderfully. "Further Harm" shifts a number of times during its length, sometimes playing around with rough beats low in the mix and at other points serving up a variety of keyboard melodies interspersed with brief vocal bits. Other numbers of note include "Pot Noodle," with what sounds like a soft acoustic guitar or a keyboard programmed to sound like one playing a lazy, relaxed melody under the main loop, and the echoing, minimal percussion breaks and squelchy electro-inspired tones of "Frisbee Skip." A series of brief bridge tracks entitled "Bolt" (i.e., "Bolt1," "Bolt2," etc.) crop up throughout Spanners, mostly following their own curious logic as they slide from one track to the next. Artist: Autechre Title: Anvil Vapre Year Of Release: 1995/2019 Label: Warp Records Genre: IDM, Experimental Quality: 320 kbps / FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 00:35:49 Total Size: 82.8 MB / 216,51 MB Tracklist: [09:47] 01. Autechre - Second Bad Vilbel [07:45] 02. Autechre - Second Scout [07:23] 03. Autechre - Second Scepe [10:53] 04. Autechre - Second Peng AllMusic Review by Ned Raggett Beginning with looped blasts of static used as rhythm, before charging headlong into a pummeling industrial-strength breakbeat, "Second Bad Vilbel" kicks off Anvil Vapre with fire. This album is another definite milestone in Autechre's transformation from an intelligent, dance music group to a much more interesting beast. The use of low rumblings, haunting song breaks and drones, and generally user-unfriendly textures establishes clear connections to the Throbbing Gristle/Cabaret Voltaire school of protean noisemaking, while the sharp, spot-on percussion slams -- at times suddenly shifting tempos -- still make everything danceable in unexpected ways. "Second Scepe" is calmer in comparison, building up the rhythm, in part, from a series of abbreviated vocal samples and a minimal keyboard bassline. "Second Scout" has a good, deep, funky, techno feel to it, with squelching bass and echoing synths that sound like Derrick May pursuing his George Clinton fascination to another level. "Second Peng" concludes the release on another high note, carefully building and combining a variety of rhythms, keyboard loops, and background sounds to create an excellent, slow pounder of a track. Tuesday Pm (3:30) 9. Welcome the Sun (6:17) 10. Heart of Oak (4:26) 11. What Love Means (3:38) Following the success of his hugely acclaimed 2012 Top Three album, 'Standing at the Sky's Edge', Richard Hawley releases his eighth studio album 'Hollow Meadows' via Parlophone Records. Recorded at Sheffield's Yellow Arch Studio in spring 2015, 'Hollow Meadows' sees Hawley return to the classic, sophisticated songwriting and subtle arrangements that made him so widely loved and revered in the first place. Meditating on such themes as ageing, fallibility and relationships, much of the album shares a brooding, yet wistful and romantic atmosphere in keeping with early albums 'Late Night Final' and 'Lowedges', as well as touches of 2009's Truelove's Gutter ('Nothing Like a Friend') and Standing at the Sky's Edge ('Which Way', 'Welcome the Sun'). Desireless (6:16) Eagle-Eye Cherry's debut album, Desireless, was an impressive set of eclectic alternative folk-rock; its radio hit, "Save Tonight," was arguably one of the best songs of the decade. The title track is a reworking of a song by his father, jazz great Don Cherry. Other standout tracks include "When Mermaids Cry," "Conversation," and "Falling in Love Again." A strong, diverse debut signifying the arrival of a major new talent. 16. Artist: Emerson Hart Title: 32 Thousand Days Year Of Release: 2019 Label: Pasquo House Records Genre: Alternative, Indie Rock, Singer-Songwriter Quality: 320 / FLAC (tracks) Total Time: 49:10 Total Size: 118 / 344 Mb Tracklist: 1. Lucky One (4:00) 2. First to Love (3:14) 3. It's True (3:13) 4. She Makes It Rain (3:09) 5. I Get You (3:02) 6. Island (4:19) 7. Lights Out (4:08) 8. When I Had You (3:21) 9. Amen (3:32) 10. Ageless (3:00) 11. Disposable (2:55) 12. Old Friend (3:34) 13. Kids (3:21) 14. 32 Thousand Days (4:20) Sincerity in music generally cuts two ways; too much can sound schlocky and pompous, too little and the artist seems removed or disengaged. It's a tricky tightrope to traverse, one that Emerson Hart is only partially successful navigating. The Tonic frontman's third solo effort is sonically analogous to his first two. According to the publicity notes, it's a song cycle of sorts concerning Hart's grandfather, who lived for the titular 32,000 days. Without knowing that though, it's difficult to glean the concept from the lyrics of these songs, many dealing with universal concepts of broken relationships ("Lights Out"), getting older ("Ageless"), and endless love ("Island"). Musically they exhibit the professionalism you would expect from a veteran singer-songwriter with Hart's experience. These 14 mid-tempo folk-rockers are never less than emotional, honest and, well, sincere. Many like the opening "Lucky One" boast arena-sized, hook-laden choruses. They work off Hart's acoustic guitar which is overlaid with drums and electric riffs providing heft and an anthemic, melodic approach that's powerful and pulsating. But as much as many of these ballads reverberate effectively on their own, 50 minutes of them, most with comparable tempos, instrumentation and structure, dampens and dilutes the effect. Each starts with a strumming acoustic guitar and gradually builds from there. Add Emerson's sober but limited voice that drips with earnestness and by the time you get to the Tom Petty-styled closing title track, one of the disc's finest, the effect is numbing. A good, objective co-pilot could have worked wonders with these songs, but as artist and producer, Hart doesn't do himself any favors. All but one track is co-written. Some are shared by as many as three others along with Hart so it's hard to say who is to blame when the lyrics turn overly obvious as in "Disposable," where each line starts with a letter of the title ("D, is the distance, I for the insult, S for the sorry we never said" etc.) or "Amen"'s oblique "Let time erase what fear has become." Still, there are moments like on the ringing "She Makes it Rain" that show Emerson Hart to be a talented singer-songwriter who constructs solid melodies and choruses. But between the similar musical makeup of the songs and a sound that too often leans towards affected, he gets in his own way. It makes the well-crafted 32 Thousand Daysonly fitfully effective when, with perhaps a better producer to bring more diversity and crispness to the overall sound, it could have been much more successful. Cherry Kicks Line-up:: Bass - David Lindqvist Drums, Percussion, Organ [Farfisa] - Nino Keller Guitar, Vocals - Joakim Åhlund Lead Vocals - César Vidal "Cherry Kicks" continues where the last album, "Youth Is Wasted on the Young", began. It's maybe a bit more pure pop now, but still very catchy and likable. More electronics are being used as well, which adds to an even more innovative music mix. Jocke Åhlund, also member of Teddybears Sthlm, has claimed that old krautrock and similar music always has meant a lot to him. César Vidal may not have the purest of voices, but it has a fair amount of personality and is just the type of vocals that fit this type of sound. The small "but" of this review involves an occasional harmlessness, but it's almost relaxing not to have to pay wholehearted attention all the time.
